North Carolina's Jason Strowbridge (55) and D.J. Ford (15) celebrate after forcing Mercer to punt in the first quarter on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. Former North Carolina defensive lineman Jason Strowbridge was drafted No. 154th overall, in the 5th round by the the Miami Dolphins. He is the second UNC player to be picked in the 2020 draft. Strowbridge was a three-year starter at UNC. He finished his career with 122 tackles, 22 for loss and 11.5 sacks and four blocked kicks. During his senior season, he racked up 45 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. He earned third-team All-ACC honors, and helped turn a 2-9 team in 2018, to a 7-6 team in 2019.

"When we first got to Carolina, we had heard about Jason and his talents, but what really impressed me was the way he carried himself," UNC coach Mack Brown said in a statement. "He was very conscientious about his work and approached everything with a professional mentality." "Jason was also very unselfish. We were playing him inside and he could have easily pouted or been worried about showing the NFL what he could do on the outside, but he was a true team player and did what we needed him to to help our defense be as good as it could possibly be. - Raleigh News Observer

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Robert Quinn testified Thursday that he doesn't remember whether he received money from a former college football player charged with violating North Carolina's sports agent law nearly a decade ago. Quinn, who officially becomes an unrestricted free agent next month, testified via video from Texas in the trial of Christopher Hawkins. Hawkins is charged with providing improper benefits to Quinn and two other former Tar Heels football players in 2010. Prosecutor W. Scott Harkey questioned Quinn regarding a 2013 interview with an investigator from the North Carolina Secretary of State's office in which Quinn said he received "hand-to-hand cash" from Hawkins, referring to both to a transcript and audio clips played in court. But Quinn responded multiple times that he didn't remember and wouldn't commit to whether it was his voice in the audio. - AP College Football

North Carolina has hired Nebraska's Jovan Dewitt as its outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. UNC announced Dewitt's hire Monday after Dewitt spent the past two seasons in the same role with the Huskers. He replaces Scott Boone, with a team spokesman saying last week Boone wouldn't return to Mack Brown's staff after "a mutual decision to part ways" due to philosophical differences. Dewitt's special teams have seven punt or kickoff returns for touchdowns in the past four seasons along with four blocked punts over the past two years. Dewitt worked with current UNC defensive coordinator Jay Bateman at Army in 2014 and 2015. He has also worked at UCF, Florida Atlantic and Northern Iowa in the past decade. - AP College Football

  12/27/19 - Sam HowellJr/2022, North Carolina, 6-1, 224 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Freshman Sam Howell threw for 294 yards and three touchdowns in addition to catching a TD pass, and North Carolina blew out Temple 55-13 in the Military Bowl on Friday to cap a satisfying return season for coach Mack Brown. Howell completed 25 of 34 passes and ran for 53 yards on three carries to help the Tar Heels (7-6) secure their first bowl victory since 2013. North Carolina was 4-6 before winning its last two regular-season games to qualify for a bowl bid. Temple (8-5) has gone to a bowl game five years in a row - and lost four of them. This was the Owls' first trip under coach Rod Carey, who came to Temple after a run of six-plus seasons at Northern Illinois in which he was 0-6 in the postseason.

North Carolina went 3-9 in 2017 and 2-9 last year before hiring Brown, who coached the Tar Heels from 1988-97 prior to heading to Texas for a 16-year stay. Coming off a five-year absence from coaching, the 68-year-old Brown can attribute a portion of his success to securing Howell, a high school star in North Carolina who initially committed to Florida State. Closing out a sensational debut season at the college level, Howell threw a pair of touchdown passes before halftime to stake the Tar Heels to a 20-6 lead. UNC pulled away early in the third quarter by scoring two touchdowns in a 12-second span, the last on a 20-yard interception return by Storm Duck. Howell completed the third-quarter blitz by catching a 2-yard TD pass from wide receiver Rontavius Groves at the end of a razzle-dazzle reverse to make it 41-6. Howell threw 38 touchdown passes this season, most by a true freshman in FBS history. His 3,641 yards passing are an Atlantic Coast Conference record for a freshman who has not redshirted. - AP College Football
