As the 2019 football season progressed, UNC fans became accustomed to seeing Javonte Williams running around and, mostly, over opponents. Williams appeared in all 13 games, starting one, and finished second on the team with 933 yards rushing. His five rushing touchdowns led the Tar Heels, and along with Michael Carter (team leading 1,003 rushing yards) provided one of the best backfields in the league.

Williams emerging as an ACC caliber running back in his second season was a good sign for UNC and the future. It's hard to believe after seeing Williams bounce off of helpless defenders like rubber, one after another, that he started the season not knowing where he would fit in. "At the beginning of the year I felt like I was lacking confidence, not knowing if I was going to play a lot," Williams told the media on a Zoom call Tuesday afternoon. "As the season went on I feel like I had a role in the offense and my confidence grew." - Raleigh News Observer

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said he is planning to introduce a bill Thursday that would require the NCAA to make rule changes regarding college athletes' ability to make money from their name, image and likeness and give the association protection from legal challenges to the new regulations. The NCAA has said it plans to loosen its rules pertaining to athletes' name, image and likeness, with the changes to be voted on at its annual convention in January 2021 and become effective at the start of the 2021-22 academic year.

According to a copy of the bill provided to USA TODAY Sports, Rubio's measure would force the NCAA to establish a new setup no later than June 30, 2021. "The only people on campus that are prohibited from benefiting from their name, their image and their likeness are student-athletes," Rubio said. "And that's just not a sustainable position...given the fact that many of these college athletic endeavors are now multi-billion-dollar industries that are generating a lot of revenue for corporate sponsors and for university programs. "This is not an effort to harm college athletics. Frankly, it's an effort to save it from what I think is going to become completely unmanageable if it's not handled uniformly across the board." - Austin American Statesman

If college football does resume next season, a successful season for Howell appears to be on the horizon, barring injuries. Next season, the Tar Heels are expected to return 10 of their 11 starters on offense, including all their top wide receivers. It will also be Howell second season in the same offense. Brown has said that he expects the playbook to open up next season with healthy backup quarterbacks. The Tar Heels were limited some in 2019 after redshirt freshman Jace Ruder injured his leg early in the year and missed the rest of the season. That meant Howell was the only scholarship quarterback available. As a result, UNC limited the number of run-pass option plays, and designed runs for Howell to prevent unnecessary injury.

UNC was not able to host spring practice or its spring game because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an April interview, Howell said he's been watching a lot of film and working out with his personal trainer, former Duke quarterback Anthony Boone, in Charlotte. It's unclear when college sports will return. Brown said in an interview earlier this week that he and his staff are preparing as if they will return to work in June, although he and his staff have not been given any direction yet. - Raleigh News Observer

The UNC Football program received a record-setting donation earlier this week and will now re-name the field at Kenan Memorial Stadium. The North Carolina Tar Heels' football program is trending upwards following a 7-6 season and their first bowl win since 2013. In Mack Brown's return to the program, UNC showed signs of turning things around after two dismal years in 2017 and 2018 in which they won a combined total of three games. Things were bleak, but Brown has started to work his magic and put some excitement back into the program.

While we await the decision on the 2020 college football season among this COVID-19 pandemic, the football program received some more good news this week. On Monday, the University along with the Rams Club announced the largest gift in history dedicated to supporting the UNC football program with new resources. The donation of a multi-million dollar gift from the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation will go to the continued support of the football program. It's now the largest single donation in University history, surpassing gifts of $10 million from Ken and Cheryl Williams in 2016 and Steve and Debbie Vetter in 2017 per the school. - Keeping It Heel.com

  04/26/20 - Charlie HeckrSr/2020, North Carolina, 6-8, 311 (DS#13 OT) + More +

Former North Carolina offensive tackle Charlie Heck was selected in the 4th round of the NFL draft by the Houston Texans. He is the first UNC player to be picked in the 2020 draft. The now 6-8, 311-pound offensive tackle, started all but one game for the Tar Heels from his redshirt sophomore to redshirt senior seasons. The one game he missed was because he broke his hand during a game. He returned the following week. Heck was voted second team All-ACC for the 2019 season. He surrendered only one sack all season and played half the season with a cast on his broken hand. "We couldn't be prouder of Charlie and want to congratulate him on this accomplishment," UNC coach Mack Brown said in a statement. "It didn't take long for us to see why Charlie would be successful, both in football and in life. He worked hard. He was a leader. He played through injury when he didn't have to. "He's just a good young man, who handles himself with class and integrity. The Texans got a good one in Charlie and I expect him to have a long and successful career." - Raleigh News Observer
