Javonte Williams scored four first-half touchdowns and North Carolina rolled past Duke 56-24 on Saturday afternoon. Sam Howell threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score for the Tar Heels (5-2, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who were playing without a national ranking for the first time this season. Just like last month, they responded from a three-point loss to whip a neighboring rival, with North Carolina State the previous victim. Williams gained 151 rushing yards on 12 carries as part of North Carolina's output of 573 yards of total offense. Backfield mate Michael Carter scored two touchdowns, posting 85 yards on the ground on 17 attempts. Howell finished 18-for-27 for 235 yards and an interception. Duke quarterback Chase Brice was 11-for-23 for 155 yards. Teammate Mataeo Durant gained 132 yards on 11 carries, highlighted by a 46-yard touchdown run. The Blue Devils (2-6, 1-6) are guaranteed a losing regular-season record for the third time in five seasons. - AP College Football

Javonte Williams ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 14 North Carolina beat No. 23 North Carolina State 48-21 in Saturday's renewal of the longtime state rivalry. Michael Carter ran for 106 yards and a score of his own for the Tar Heels (4-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who used a run-through-and-over-tacklers ground game that helped them take control in the third quarter. "I said it earlier in the year and they reinforce it every week: I think they're probably the best combination of two backs in the country," UNC coach Mack Brown said, adding: "When we get them going, the rest of it works." UNC ran for 326 yards and finished with 578 overall, bouncing back from an upset loss at Florida State to beat the Wolfpack (4-2, 4-2) by a lopsided margin for the second straight season. Williams had three touchdowns in last year's 41-10 win, then had a pair of short TD runs as UNC ran off 21 straight points after leading just 17-7 at halftime. He punctuated another big rivalry performance by blowing through a huge hole up front, then cutting past multiple defenders to the pylon for a 27-yard score that made it 45-14 with 14:11 left. Sam Howell threw for 252 yards and a TD for the Tar Heels, while Dyami Brown had 105 yards on a career-best seven catches. - North Carolina/AP College Football

  10/23/20 - Sam HowellJr/2022, North Carolina, 6-1, 224 (DS#5 QB) + More +

What's about to take place in Chapel Hill next Saturday is so rare none of the players involved were born the last time it happened. Back in 1993, both UNC and N.C. State were ranked in the top 25 when they met on the football field. The Tar Heels were 18 in the land, the Wolfpack No. 19. Like 2020, Mack Brown roamed the sidelines for UNC, but that's the one common factor ahead of the latest installment in this heated rivalry. For the first time in 27 years, the Tar Heels and Wolfpack will meet head-to-head with both teams ranked in the AP top 25. After a 31-20 win over Duke on Saturday, N.C. State (4-1, 4-1) cracks the top 25 for the first time this season, coming in at No. 23. It's the first time the Wolfpack has been ranked since Nov. 8 of the 2018 campaign. The Tar Heels (3-1, 3-1) peaked out at No. 5 last week, but dropped to No. 14 after losing at Florida State Saturday night, 31-28. UNC fell behind 24-0 to the Seminoles, but battled back and had a chance to tie or take the lead on the final drive. The Tar Heels drove into FSU territory, but failed to convert on a 4th and 9 with 35 seconds remaining. - Raleigh News Observer

The Tar Heels (3-0, 3-0 ACC) should certainly be confident going into Saturday's game against Florida State and not just because of their early success. The Seminoles (1-3, 0-3) currently rank last in the ACC in scoring defense, allowing 37.2 points per game. Longo said the Tar Heels' staff allows players to voice what plays they like best, which has helped lead to their success starting games. Longo said they tend to run those plays early on to establish a tempo. Howell is 14 of 18 passing on first drives for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Carter and junior running back Javonte Williams have combined to rush 13 times for 96 yards and a touchdown on first possessions.

Carolina is 7 for 8 in third down conversions. The Heels didn't get a third-and-20 against Syracuse, but converted a four-and-7 with an 18-yard reception by senior wide receiver Dazz Newsome. "I always ask our guys for their top 10 plays, a lot of that input from them goes into our little checklists for the opening drive," he said. The Heels seem to have that checklist down pat, now they have to focus on keeping that same energy throughout the game. Their 56-45 win over VT was the first game they felt the offense stayed in sync for the better part of the game. Against the Orange and Eagles, it was a bit disjointed. "We do start fast and we do finish fast," Carter told reporters in a video conference. "I think where our point of emphasis that we need to get better on is the second and third quarter." - Raleigh News Observer

North Carolina jumped to No. 5 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll released Sunday. It is the football program's best ranking since it was also fifth back in November 1997, which was coach Mack Brown's last year before he took over the job at Texas. "We've talked to the guys about, we need to buy a house in this neighborhood," Brown said in his Virginia Tech postgame video conference on Saturday. "We haven't been here much. We've been visiting the first couple of weeks in the top 10. That's who we want to be, but have we earned it yet?" The Tar Heels (3-0, 3-0 ACC) are fresh off a 56-45 win over then-No. 19 VT on Saturday. They jumped ahead three spots, passing Ohio State, which has yet to play a game; Florida, which lost at Texas A&M; and Miami, who lost to No. 1 Clemson. The Gators fell from fourth, the Buckeyes sixth, and the Hurricanes were seventh. UNC travels to face Florida State on Saturday, which ironically was the team it lost to back in '97 when it was last ranked at No. 5. The Seminoles are nothing like their predecessors from three decades ago. FSU (1-3, 0-3) has lost its three conference games by an average of 20 points. - Raleigh News Observer

Are the Tar Heels as good as the hype that's been steadily building since last December, and will continue to build after Saturday's 56-45 win over the Hokies? Maybe so. But it's still too soon to say. The offense is every bit as explosive as advertised, with the unstoppable one-two running punch of Michael Carter and Javonte Williams - 383 yards! - and quarterback Sam Howell connected on a couple long passes for the first time this season, the one missing link in the UNC offense. The Hokies hadn't allowed this many points in high definition. They hadn't allowed this many points in their entire 17 years in the ACC. But the Tar Heels were also in total control twice, up 21-0 early and 35-14 at the half, and continued to let the Hokies make a game of it, whether through dropped passes on offense or breakdowns on defense. "There's another level," receiver Dyami Brown said. "We had a couple drops. I think about two three-and-outs. We didn't really finish those drives. We can go further. We can do more." - Raleigh News Observer

North Carolina's 56-45 win over then-No. 19 Virginia Tech marked the most points the Tar Heels have scored against an opponent in the AP Top 25. Their 656 total yards were the second-most allowed by the Hokies. Alabama amassed 833 against them in 1973. Carolina's 399 rushing yards were its most against an ACC opponent since 1988. Sam Howell passed for 257 yards and three touchdowns, Michael Carter rushed 17 times for a career-high 214 yards and two scores, and Javonte Williams rushed 20 times for a career-high 169 yards and two TDs. It was the third time in program history, and first time in an ACC game since 1980, that the Tar Heels had two rushers go for 100 yards and a quarterback pass for 200 in the same game. - AP College Football

  10/10/20 - Ty ChandlerrSr/2022, North Carolina, 5-11, 203 (DS#15 RB) + More +

Tennessee senior running back Ty Chandler is leading the Southeastern Conference in rushing through two weekends despite failing to notch a 100-yard performance in victories over South Carolina and Missouri. Of course, negative plays can factor into such totals as well. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder out of Nashville's Montgomery Bell Academy has carried 32 times for 176 yards for a robust average of 5.5 yards per rush. Not once in those 32 carries has Chandler endured a lost-yardage stop, a trait he hopes to continue this Saturday when the No. 14 Volunteers face No. 3 Georgia in Sanford Stadium. "We definitely take pride in that - being able to get back to the line of scrimmage and getting more yards than what the play is blocked for," Chandler said Tuesday afternoon on a Zoom call. "That's what is preached to us every day, and that's what we try and do.

Tennessee's running backs didn't have a lost-yardage carry in last weekend's 35-12 thumping of Mizzou, as Chandler, sophomore Eric Gray and freshman Jabari Small combined on 39 rushes for 222 yards. Vols third-year coach Jeremy Pruitt said after the game that negative runs typically are the result of missed assignments and that running backs should always fall forward. Pruitt felt like his rushers could have broken more arm tackles but was pleased they didn't get greedy. "Sometimes a running back can get greedy and bounce things that he shouldn't or maybe make the wrong cut," Pruitt said. "Our guys are coachable, and they're trying to do the things we ask them to do." - Chattanooga Times Free Press

  10/05/20 - Antavious LanerSr/2025, North Carolina, 5-09, 195 (DS#24 FS) + More +

OCT 5 SUN BELT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Antavious Lane, Georgia State,...Georgia State safety Antavious Lane returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown to help lead the Panthers to a 49-29 victory over East Carolina. The redshirt freshman from West Palm Beach, Fla., also contributed five tackles and two pass breakups. Lane was a key cog in a Georgia State defense that did not allow a touchdown to East Carolina (ECU scored its three touchdowns on a pick-six, fake field goal and blocked punt). He helped the Panthers hold ECU to 50 yards rushing, tying the third-lowest figure in program history, and 292 total yards for an average of just 3.7 yards per play. His pick-six came in the fourth quarter and gave Georgia State a 42-16 lead with 13 minutes to play. For the season, Lane is the Panthers' leading tackler with 14 tackles, one tackle for loss, an interception, two pass breakups and a forced fumble. He has one of Georgia State's Sun Belt-leading five interceptions on the season. - Sun Belt Football

  10/03/20 - Sam HowellJr/2022, North Carolina, 6-1, 224 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Sam Howell threw for two touchdowns and Trey Morrison scored after intercepting the potential tying 2-point conversion with 45 seconds left on Saturday to lead No. 12 North Carolina to a 26-22 victory over Boston College. With the cancellation of one game because of the virus and a scheduled off week leaving North Carolina idle since Sept. 12, the Tar Heels (2-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) sent BC (2-1, 1-1) to its first loss under new coach Jeff Hafley. Howell completed 14 of 26 passes for 225 yards, including a 41-yard score to Javonte Williams that gave Carolina a 21-13 lead with just over a minute left in the first half. Williams ran for 57 yards and caught two passes for 56, and Michael Carter carried 16 times for 121 yards for the Tar Heels. UNC led 24-16 with just under six minutes left before Phil Jurkovec drove BC into Tar Heels territory and completed three passes in the end zone.

The first two were negated by penalties, but a 6-yard pass to C.J. Lewis made it a two-point game with 45 seconds left, with the 2-point conversion to come. Jurkovec scrambled and threw to the end zone, but Morrison picked him off and ran down the left sideline for the rare defensive 2-point conversion. Jurkovec completed 37 of 56 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns, hitting tight end Hunter Long nine times for 96 yards. Boston College, which led the ACC in rushing last year behind A.J. Dillon's third straight 1,000-yard season, totaled just 40 yards rushing. - North Carolina/AP College Football
