  11/27/21 - Max JohnsonrSr/2026, North Carolina, 6-5, 225 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Max Johnson hit Jaray Jenkins with a 28-yard scoring pass down the right sideline with 20 seconds left, and LSU knocked off No. 14 Texas A&M 27-24 on Saturday night to give coach Ed Orgeron a triumphant send-off in his final game in Tiger Stadium. LSU had lost a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and looked to be on the brink its first losing season since 1999 when Johnson, who'd been sacked six times in the second half, came alive on fourth-and-6 from the LSU 19. Johnson kept the )Tigers alive with a decisive pass over the middle to tight end Jack Bech and then hit Jenkins for a 31-yard gain. An 11-yard pass to Malik Nabers put LSU on the 28, setting up the go-ahead score three plays later and setting off a wild celebration in Death Valley while Orgeron smiled from ear-to-ear on the sideline.

LSU linebacker Damone Clark, a Butkus Award finalist, sealed the victory by sacking Aggies QB Zach Calzada twice. The victory gave LSU (6-6, 3-5 SEC) two straight wins to close the regular season as a bowl eligible team. The loss likely relegated Texas A&M (8-4, 4-4) to a less prestigious bowl while ending the Aggies chance for a first 10-win season since 2012. Orgeron, who presided over an undefeated national championship season in 2019 and has gone 11-11 since and agreed back in October to step down after this season. One of the coaches LSU was widely believed to be pursuing as a candidate to replace Orgeron is Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher, a former LSU offensive coordinator and national championship coach at Florida State who was lured to College Station by former A&M athletic director Scott Woodward, who now holds the same post at LSU. But Fisher has said emphatically that he has no plans to leave the Aggies, who have been competitive since his arrival in College Station in 2017, but have yet to seriously contend in the SEC during his tenure. - LSU/AP College Football

  11/20/21 - Sam HowellJr/2022, North Carolina, 6-1, 224 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Playing without quarterback Sam Howell, North Carolina ran for 305 yards to beat Wofford 34-14 on Saturday, becoming bowl eligible in the process. Howell, who was a game-time decision, missed the first game of his career due to an upper-body injury suffered against No. 20 Pittsburgh last week. Jacolby Criswell started for the Tar Heels and threw for 125 yards, adding 66 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Freshman Drake Maye took over after halftime and finished with 89 yards. The Tar Heels (6-5, 3-4 ACC) never trailed in a Senior Day win where they held the Terriers (1-10, 0-8 Southern Conference) to 242 total yards and rode a ground game that scored three times. British Brooks led the Tar Heel rushing attack with 89 yards and two touchdowns, while Ty Chandler added 78 yards. Saturday might have marked a home finale for Howell, a junior and top NFL prospect who participated in the team's Senior Day festivities. Terrier quarterback Peyton Derrick finished with 37 passing yards and 69 rushing yards. - North Carolina/AP College Football

  11/15/21 - Sam HowellJr/2022, North Carolina, 6-1, 224 (DS#5 QB) + More +

North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell is dealing with an upper-body injury that could sideline him for what coach Mack Brown said will be his final home game Saturday against Wofford. Team spokesman Jeremy Sharpe said Monday that Howell is considered day-to-day with an injury to his non-throwing side after last week's overtime loss at Pittsburgh and would be a gametime decision. Brown later said Howell would spend the week working with team doctors and it was unclear how much he might practice, though the junior is expected to be ready for the regular-season finale at 25th-ranked rival North Carolina State on Nov. 26. "He wants to play Saturday," Brown said. "If he can, he will." Brown had said in preseason that the team was treating this year as though it would be the last for Howell, who has started every game for the Tar Heels dating to his time as a true freshman during Brown's second tenure in Chapel Hill.

Howell has gone on to set the program's career records for passing yardage, passing touchdowns, touchdown responsibility and total offense while making himself a high NFL draft prospect. "I haven't thought Sam was coming back since last year," Brown said. "I have never had one thought about him coming back, and he's going to be a first-round draft choice. So I think he should leave." Howell has never missed a college game and has thrown at least one touchdown pass in every one. He currently is seventh in the Bowl Subdivision ranks in total offense (343 yards per game) thanks to an expanded running game that has seen him have six games with at least 98 yards rushing. But he's taken a beating this year behind a veteran offensive line that has struggled with injuries at center and inconsistency. UNC has surrendered 39 sacks, tied with Tennessee for the most allowed by any power-conference team. - AP College Football

  11/06/21 - Ty ChandlerrSr/2022, North Carolina, 5-11, 203 (DS#15 RB) + More +

Ty Chandler ran for career highs of 213 yards and four touchdowns to help North Carolina rally from 18 down in the third quarter to stun 10th-ranked Wake Forest 58-55, handing the Demon Deacons their first loss in a nonconference matchup of instate Atlantic Coast Conference teams. Chandler's big day included a 50-yard breakaway run with 1:12 left. That was the final blow for the Tar Heels (5-4) as they rallied from a huge third-quarter deficit to beat the Demon Deacons (8-1, No. 9 CFP) for the second straight year, following a 21-point comeback last year by erasing a 45-27 deficit with 7:38 left in the third. The loss doesn't impact the Demon Deacons' pursuit of their first ACC title since 2006 since it was part of a home-and-home nonconference series announced in 2015 with the schools not playing each other as often amid the expanded ACC's scheduling model. But it likely ends their hopes of climbing deeper into the College Football Playoff race, even if they win out in league play and win the ACC championship game.

Sam Hartman threw for 398 yards and five touchdowns while running for 78 yards and two more scores for Wake Forest. A.T. Perry and Jaquarii Roberson each hauled in a pair of touchdown grabs to lead a 615-yard effort from the offense. But that high-scoring unit, one of the best of the Bowl Subdivision, stalled at a critical time with three straight empty drives against a much-maligned defense that had struggled to show many tangible signs of improvement this season. Sam Howell threw for 216 yards and a touchdown while running for 104 and two more scores in a matchup of high-profile quarterbacks. He helped the Tar Heels post 546 yards and set up a tiebreaking 25-yard field goal by Grayson Atkins with 2:12 left. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Sam Howell threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as North Carolina held off Miami 45-42, sending the Hurricanes to their worst record at the midway mark of a season in more than two decades. Miami was in position to tie or win when reaching the North Carolina 16-yard line in the final minute, but linebacker Cedric Gray intercepted a tipped pass with 6 seconds left. "It's like a roller-coaster. When you hop on it, you feel like you're in good shape and then you go back down and come back (up)," North Carolina coach Mack Brown said. "One thing this team hasn't done this year is won a tough game at the end." Ty Chandler ran for two touchdowns for the Tar Heels (4-3, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) in a matchup of two teams that began the season in the Top 15, but are trying to gain traction midway through the season.

The Hurricanes (2-4, 0-2) are 2-4 for the first time since 1997 when they were on NCAA probation and stuck with scholarship limitations. "I'm proud of the way these guys fight. I know that (another win) is coming," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. "There's a really good team in that locker room. We don't have a good record." Howell was 17 for 26 for 154 yards in the air with an interception while running for 98 yards on 17 carries. Chandler gained 104 yards on the ground on 18 attempts. Howell's touchdown runs covered 30 and 11 yards, both times pinballing off Miami defenders. "A couple of times he just ran through arms and twisted and went in to score," Brown said. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Sam Howell threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns and North Carolina topped Duke 38-7 on Saturday, keeping hold of the coveted Victory Bell for a third straight year. The Tar Heels (3-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) jumped ahead with a pair of explosive plays in the first half. Howell connected with running back Ty Chandler down the sideline for a 75-yard score to open the scoring. Less than two minutes later, Kevin Hester hit Duke's Gunnar Holmberg as he was throwing, causing the ball to flutter out of his hand and Trey Morrison returned the fumble 63 yards for a touchdown. Allowing the scoop-and-score epitomized a frustrating performance for Duke (3-2, 0-1 ACC). The Blue Devils punted nine times, turned the ball over twice and converted just 2 of 15 third downs. Duke scored its lone points on an 80-yard catch-and-run by Jalon Calhoun in the third quarter. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Blue Devils. - North Carolina/AP College Football

  09/25/21 - Max JohnsonrSr/2026, North Carolina, 6-5, 225 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Max Johnson passed for 280 yards and four touchdowns to lead LSU to a 28-25 victory over late-rallying Mississippi State on Saturday. LSU (3-1, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) had only 343 yards offense and was 5 of 32 on third down but reeled off several big plays when needed. Mississippi State (2-2, 0-1) dominated the stat sheet with 486 yards offense and 12 third-down conversions, but turned the ball over twice inside the LSU 30-yard line and regularly squandered momentum-building drives. Neither team established dominance early, and LSU led 7-3 at the half. But on the second play of the third quarter, the Bulldogs bit on a play-action fake and Johnson found Kayshon Boutte over the top for a 64-yard score, his second of the day. Later in the quarter, the Tigers confused the MSU defense again on a similar play and Trey Palmer pitter-pattered into the end zone for a 58-yard touchdown, no defender within 20 yards.

As has become their custom, the Bulldogs made a hard push in the fourth quarter. Will Rogers found Makai Polk and Austin for late touchdowns, then with just under two minutes remaining hit Jo'Quavious Marks for a 16-yard score and Malik Heath for the two-point conversion to close the gap to 38-35. But the ensuing onside kick didn't go 10 yards and the Tigers were able to run out the clock. It was the second straight week MSU misfielded an onside kick late in the game. Johnson was 17-of-27 passing with one interception and Boutte caught four balls for 85 yards. Rogers was 47-of-62 passing for 371 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Marks rushed for 46 yards and had nine catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. - LSU/AP College Football
