He helped the Spartans produce 424 total yards, including 240 rushing yards, while averaging 4.7 yards per rush and recording 24 first downs. He recorded a seven-yard sack and a quarterback hurry as Norfolk State's defensive front totaled six sacks for 40 yards, its most in a game since 2023. He had a 37-yard return into Hampton territory to set up the MEAC squad's first TD, scored on a 76-yard return midway through the second quarter to provide the lead for good, and added a 57-yard TD return in the fourth.   Evan Helfrich kicked a 29-yard field goal in overtime to give former NFL quarterback Michael Vick his first collegiate head coaching victory with Norfolk State, 34-31 over Virginia State on Saturday night. Vick, who played in the NFL for 13 seasons after his college career at Virginia Tech, took over the Spartans program last December.

He was nearly denied his first win after the Spartans (1-1) saw Division-II Virginia State take a 31-24 lead with 2:14 to go with a touchdown and then watched a 46-yard field-goal attempt by the Trojans hit the cross bar after the Spartans had tied the game with 53 seconds left on Jaylen Laudermilk's 33-yard run. The Trojans turned the ball over on downs in overtime, opening the door for the Spartans, who scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to rally from a 23-7 deficit. Otto Kuhns threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns for Norfolk State. Rahsaan Matthews Jr. passed for 299 yards and two scores for Virginia State (1-1) with Marquis Smith finishing with 105 yards receiving and Ajenavi Byrd 101. - AP College Football

  Former Auburn wide receiver J.J. Evans, a four-star prospect coming out of high school, has transferred to North Alabama. Evans spent two-plus seasons at Auburn after signing with the Tigers as part of their 2020 recruiting class, which was ranked seventh in the nation, but he left the program one week into the 2022 season and opted to enter the transfer portal. North Alabama announced the addition of Evans on Friday afternoon.

In signing Evans, UNA adds a former blue chip recruit to the Lions' offense as they head into the first year under head coach Brent Dearmon, who was previously on staff at Auburn as an analyst during the 2013-14 seasons. The 6-foot-2, 224-pound Evans was a four-star recruiting coming out of Montevallo, where he was rated as the No. 169 overall player in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. - Birmingham News

He is the second player at the university in the past 22 years to score five times through the air in a single game.   Otto Kuhns threw five touchdown passes and scored from 15-yards out with five minutes left in the game to lift Norfolk State to a 42-38 win over South Carolina State in the regular season finale Saturday. The win snapped a four-game loss streak by the Spartans (2-9, 2-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). South Carolina State (3-8, 1-4) closed out its season with four straight losses. Kuhns was 16 of 28 passing for 242 yards with an interception and ran for 41 yards on eight carries. Three of his TD passes went to Da'Quan Felton, who caught nine balls for 163 yards. Tyrece Nick threw two touchdown passes, was picked off once and ran 24 yards for a first-quarter touchdown for South Carolina State.
