  07/14/21 - Tyreke JohnsonrSr/2024, Nebraska, 6-1, 180 (DS#999 CB) + More +

Urban Meyer, one of the greatest coaches ever to grace the planet, offered Johnson a scholarship while he was still in junior high. Think about it: That was back in 2013. As it turned out, Johnson's recruitment was one of the longest and most highly-contested battles in the class of 2018. Yes, Ohio State ultimately won that battle. But Johnson never really became the star in the Buckeye program that many imagined, which led to his recent transfer to Nebraska.

Johnson redshirted in 2018 and then played in a total of 12 games for Ohio State, experiencing multiple coaching changes in the process as other players found full-time roles ahead of him. Still, the decision to leave OSU and look for another opportunity was not an easy one for the former top-ranked safety nationally by Rivals.com. "It was hard to leave Ohio State just because of how great the program is, how great the coaches are and the relationships and bonds that I've built with my brothers over there," Johnson told the Lincoln Journal Star last month. He played just 77 snaps in 2020, and was projected to be a reserve cornerback again this year, with Sevyn Banks, Cameron Brown and Ryan Watts likely to lead the depth chart at that position. Now, however, Johnson has an opportunity to revitalize his career in Lincoln. - Lincoln Journal Star

  07/09/21 - Javin WrightrSr/2026, Nebraska, 6-4, 230 (DS#38 OLB) + More +

Last fall, Wright was on the verge of earning some run in Nebraska's secondary when he suffered a season-ending knee injury during camp. A frustrating outcome for a young player NU coaches are high on, no doubt, but Wright came back and impressed again this spring despite doing it mostly at a new position. Wright is a unique player on the roster because he possesses a defensive back's skill set with the frame (6-foot-4 and 220 pounds) of a pass-rusher. As it turns out, defensive coordinator Erik Chinander and company have a position for just that type of player. Wright and freshman Isaac Gifford - if there were one player on the roster who didn't make this list but perhaps should have, it might be Gifford - started grooming this spring to back up senior JoJo Domann in the outside linebacker/nickel spot that Domann has played very well the past two years. Wright and Domann are much different players frame-wise, but both feel good about their ability to run with receivers and play in coverage. Wright put that on display during an open April practice when he ran with slot receiver Samori Toure up the middle of the field and made a leaping, twisting, one-handed interception. - Lincoln Journal Star

  06/18/21 - JoJo DomannrSr/2022, Nebraska, 6-1, 230 (DS#7 OLB) + More +

Summer's in full swing - just look at the thermometer - and with it comes the annual parade of preseason watch lists for various college football awards. It kicked off Thursday, and Nebraska outside linebacker JoJo Domann earned a nod as a preseason candidate for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which honors standout defensive players. Domann (6-foot-1 and 235 pounds) turned himself into a consistent playmaker in 2020 and is going to be counted on as one of the stalwarts of a veteran defense again this fall. The versatile defender played every snap for the Huskers in eight games last year and compiled 58 tackles (6½ for loss), two forced fumbles and five breakups. That was good enough to earn honorable mention All-Big Ten. - Lincoln Journal Star

  06/14/21 - Tyreke JohnsonrSr/2024, Nebraska, 6-1, 180 (DS#999 CB) + More +

By the time Tyreke Johnson left Nebraska's campus during the first week of June, he knew he wanted to play for the Huskers. The former Ohio State defensive back and five-star prospect out of Jacksonville, Florida, found a combination of scheme fit, energy on campus and an old high school connection that led him to decide on transferring to NU. Johnson has been enrolled at UNL since at least the middle of last week, announced his commitment on Sunday and discussed it all with the Journal Star on Monday morning. "Just from the moment I hit the portal, Nebraska has done a great job of making me feel appreciated and basically showing me that they have all the tools to be great and they're just missing a few pieces," Johnson said in a phone interview from Florida. "They just made me feel wanted. Then, when I stepped on campus, I felt the love and the energy of the place and saw it as an opportunity and place where I can go and focus on myself and be all about ball."

Johnson redshirted in 2018 and then played in 12 games for the Buckeyes and experienced multiple coaching changes in the process as other players found full-time roles ahead of him. Still, the decision to leave OSU and look for another opportunity was not an easy one for the former top-ranked safety nationally in the 2018 recruiting class. "It was hard to leave Ohio State just because of how great the program is, how great the coaches are and the relationships and bonds that I've built with my brothers over there," said Johnson, who first entered his name into the transfer portal about a month ago. - Lincoln Journal Star

  06/14/21 - Tyreke JohnsonrSr/2024, Nebraska, 6-1, 180 (DS#999 CB) + More +

Nebraska found its transfer defensive back, and he's a former blue-chip prospect from a fellow Big Ten school. Former Ohio State defensive back Tyreke Johnson committed to the Huskers on Sunday. The former five-star prospect is set to join a defensive backfield that has several accomplished players but also a general lack of depth. Johnson has three years of eligibility remaining.

He has been listed as an enrolled student at Nebraska since at least Wednesday but had not said anything about his commitment until Sunday. NU officials cannot publicly comment on unsigned players. Since Johnson is a transfer, Husker staff may not be able to acknowledge him until he arrives on campus, which will most likely be in July. Johnson redshirted in 2018 and then appeared in 12 games over the past two seasons for the Buckeyes, but never found full-time work in the OSU secondary. Johnson arrived in Columbus as a heralded recruit in the 2018 class, finishing as the No. 14 overall prospect nationally according to Rivals and the No. 21 according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, each of which was good enough to put him in five-star status. - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/20/21 - Omar ManningrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-2, 231 (DS#250 WR) + More +

Frost called him an offense-changer when he signed in December 2019, but he appeared in just one game last fall and struggled to stay healthy. It wasn't clear what his future would hold, but Manning by all accounts had a good winter conditioning and then stacked a productive spring on top of it. The imposing 6-foot-4, 225-pounder showed flashes of the talent that makes him a different package than even NU's other bigger players like Betts and Toure. The stock's moving in the right direction. Now the task for all parties is to keep it headed upward. - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/19/21 - Ronald ThompkinsrSo/2024, Nebraska, 5-10, 195 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Ronald Thompkins rose to No. 2 on Nebraska's running back depth chart entering last season. He appeared in two of the first three games, rushing five times for 24 yards, before fading into the background. He's now out of the program. A native of Loganville, Georgia, Thompkins has entered the transfer portal, easing a bit of a logjam of Nebraska running backs competing for playing time in 2021.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Thompkins battled from behind early in his time at Nebraska after suffering torn ACLs in both his junior and senior seasons at powerhouse Grayson High School near Atlanta. He spent most of the 2019 season at NU trying to get healthy after suffering yet another knee-related injury setback that year. However, he emerged as the No. 2 option behind senior starter Dedrick Mills heading into last season's opener at Ohio State, in which Thompkins rushed four times for 22 yards while adding a 10-yard reception. - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/13/21 - Cam Taylor-BrittSr/2022, Nebraska, 5-11, 196 (DS#10 CB) + More +

Taylor-Britt has ascended into a face-of-the-program type player and perhaps the best player on the roster. The second-team All-Big Ten cornerback in 2020 is NU's best candidate for All-America-type honors in some time. Offensive coordinator Matt Lubick put it simply in a video detailing Taylor-Britt's spring: "It's a challenge to complete a pass on that guy." - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/12/21 - Tyreke JohnsonrSr/2024, Nebraska, 6-1, 180 (DS#999 CB) + More +

Tyreke Johnson's tenure with Ohio State football mostly lingers as unrealized promise for a player asked to live up to someone else's lofty estimations. Johnson has entered the transfer portal, as first reported Wednesday by Rivals. Johnson later confirmed the development on Twitter. The Jacksonville, Florida, native came to Ohio State as a five-star prospect in the 2018 class. Yet Johnson could never climb the depth chart, and coming out of his fourth spring in the program seemingly had no path to a 2021 role.

After using a redshirt in 2018, Johnson played in eight games off the bench in 2019. Yet in 2020, even after an early season-ending injury to Cam Brown and no other veteran options in the secondary, Johnson could not establish a role. Johnson totaled five tackles in four 2020 games. He is the fourth OSU player to enter the portal since the end of last season, joining receivers Mookie Cooper and Jameson Williams and offensive lineman Max Wray. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  05/12/21 - Oliver MartinrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-0, 199 (DS#113 WR) + More +

On Tuesday, Nebraska rolled out the top 10 results on the roster in that department and said via social media that it will work its way through releasing the top performers in other disciplines of the Performance Index and Strength Index Testing conducted at the end of the team's eight-week winter conditioning program. Nebraska head coach Scott Frost couldn't help but mention Oliver Martin's impressive vertical jump before spring ball even started. Then over the next five weeks, Martin, the walk-on transfer wide receiver from Iowa, proceeded to vault himself to what looks like a spot atop the depth chart in offensive coordinator Matt Lubick's position group. Martin, listed at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, had a 40-inch vertical jump. - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/10/21 - Ty RobinsonrSr/2025, Nebraska, 6-5, 288 (DS#12 DT) + More +

It was expected to be a deep group in 2021 and spring ball reinforced that. Defensive line coach Tony Tuioti said he has at least six players he can trust and potentially seven in Ben Stille, Ty Robinson, Casey Rogers, Damion Daniels, Jordon Riley, Deontre Thomas and walk-on Colton Feist. Stille is the unquestioned leader of the group, but Robinson appears to be next in line. The 6-foot-6, 315-pounder got a ton of snaps in 2020 and is poised to be one of the best players on the defense as soon as this fall. If he starts generating a consistent pass rush this year, he will be a problem for many Big Ten offensive lines. - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/04/21 - Turner CorcoranrSr/2026, Nebraska, 6-6, 310 (DS#80 OT) + More +

Had he done it during the season, perhaps Turner Corcoran would have brought an even bigger reaction with his fashion choice than it did Saturday. But when the freshman offensive lineman showed up for a postgame interview wearing a white hat with "RUN THE DAMN BALL" embroidered in red letters in the front, it still brought a few chuckles. "Me and Bryce (Benhart) just got them like three or four days ago. We placed an order and they came from Australia and it got here the other day, so we were like, 'Why not wear them for the Spring Game?'" Corcoran said. "They got here just in time for the game." Most offensive linemen would readily admit they prefer ground-based tactics when it comes to the offensive approach to the game: line up and smash the guy in front of you as far down the field as you can until the whistle blows, then do it again.

It doesn't always work like that, of course, and Nebraska's offense, despite leaning more on the running game toward the end of last season, will still look to get its shiny new toys at receiver involved whenever possible. But this is Nebraska, dang it, and running the ball will always be sewn into the fabric of those red jerseys the Huskers pull on every Saturday at Memorial Stadium. So was the 6-foot-6, 300-pound Corcoran, who last season became the first true freshman to ever start at left tackle for Nebraska in the Huskers' win over Rutgers, trying to make some kind of statement that he wants NU to utilize the handoff more than the forward pass? - Lincoln Journal Star

  05/02/21 - Brenden JaimesSr/2021, Nebraska, 6-5, 298 (DS#24 OT) + More +

Brenden Jaimes will soon be sporting powder blue jerseys and protecting one of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL in southern California. The former Husker offensive tackle was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the fifth round of Saturday's NFL Draft. The Chargers will be getting a durable lineman who started a school-record 40 games at Nebraska. They're getting a prospect open to moving to guard after playing at tackle most of his playing career.

And to the Chargers' liking, they're getting a player who told reporters Saturday that he has a chip on his shoulder. "I feel like I was just as good, if not better than some of these guys that have been drafted before me," said Jaimes, who was the 159th player taken. "Obviously they're all great players and they all deserve to go where they went, but I feel like I'm right up there with them. "I've always been doubted throughout my football career for being too light, not strong enough, not fast enough. It's just another obstacle to overcome." - Lincoln Journal Star

  04/30/21 - Isaiah NeyorrSr/2025, Nebraska, 6-4, 218 (DS#43 WR) + More +

If Wyoming's offense turned in an explosive play last season, chances are Isaiah Neyor was involved. His first collegiate catch was a deep ball in which the 6-foot-3, 210-pound receiver jumped to extend over bracket coverage from Nevada's Tyson Williams and Jojuan Claiborne, fending off both defenders to haul in the 45-yarder. Defenses didn't contain him much from there. A redshirt freshman last season, Neyor burst onto the scene as the Cowboys' most lethal vertical threat on the rare occasion when UW's run-heavy offense was able to take advantage of defenses' aggressiveness over the top.

Neyor averaged a whopping 31 yards per catch on his way to all-Mountain West honorable mention honors, which was on pace to lead all Football Bowl Subdivision wideouts. Problem was, Neyor only caught eight balls all season, which wasn't enough for him to qualify among statistical leaders. Still, his big-play ability quickly earned him a certain reputation. "I think he's the best deep-ball receiver in the country. The numbers don't lie," fellow receiver Ayden Eberhardt said. "And if he'd had a couple more catches here or there, then he would've been in (the running). I think that's pretty obvious." - Casper Star-Tribune

  04/21/21 - Chris KolarevicrSr/2023, Nebraska, 6-1, 224 (DS#83 OLB) + More +

Like a lot of Nebraska football fans, Chris Kolarevic watched the Huskers' 2020 season on television from his couch. The main difference, of course, is that the graduate transfer linebacker from Northern Iowa kept closest watch of Barrett Ruud's inside linebackers group, knowing that he'd be joining them in a few short months. When Kolarevic verbally committed in late October, he did not know that Will Honas would opt to return for a sixth season after a solid 2020. He had not yet seen Luke Reimer make the jump into being an impact player or Nick Henrich finish strong down the stretch by tallying 21 tackles over the season's final two weeks. "I wasn't able to take a visit, which was tough because of COVID, but I was glad I got to watch them on TV. It was cool watching those guys play," Kolarevic said Monday.

"They do a lot of different things than I did at UNI, so it was good to just kind of see how their defense worked and how they run around. They were flying around last year and did a good job, so it was fun to watch those guys play. Since arriving on campus, though, Kolarevic said he's blended in well with the group and that he's excited about the unit's potential going forward. Oh, and those guys he watched on television have pretty darned good things to say about him, too. "He's a freak of nature, I'll tell you that," Henrich said Monday. "Super athletic, fast, physical. … He's also been just outstanding learning the defense and asking us questions. He's been a great addition to the room." - Lincoln Journal Star
