Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz called running back Tyler Badie the "least-talked-about great player in the country." Badie turned in another under-the-radar classic Saturday, rushing for a career-high 217 yards and scoring three touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a 48-35 victory over North Texas. "That sucker is gritty," Drinkwitz said. Badie averaged 12.8 yards per carry and had four runs of at least 30 yards. Late in the third quarter, North Texas defensive back DeShawn Gaddie stood up Badie and had him in a headlock before he somehow slipped free and ran for 42 yards. Even Badie struggled to explain that one. "I closed my eyes, and I wasn't down, so I just kept running," he said. Missouri (3-3) opened a 31-7 halftime lead, but North Texas (1-4) started hitting big pass plays to keep the score competitive.

Austin Aune completed 16 of 26 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns. The Mean Green outgained the Tigers 493-474 but couldn't overcome three turnovers, including a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo. "We played hard and fought for each other, which is something we can build on," North Texas coach Seth Littrell said. "We played with emotion, but eventually we have to get out of our own way. We are taking turns making errors." Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak completed 21 of 32 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns, including a 41-yard scoring pass to JJ Hester. Dawson Downing put the game away in the final four minutes with a 60-yard touchdown run. By that point, Badie was relaxing on the sideline, getting a well-earned break. He had a low profile entering the season because he backed up workhorse Larry Rountree the past three years. With Rountree moving on to the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers this year, Badie is getting his chance to shine. - Missouri/AP College Football

SEPT 27 SUN BELT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nate Noel, App State, (So., RB – Miami, Fla.),...Mountaineers sophomore running back Nate Noel rushed for a career-high 187 yards in App State's 31-30 come-from-behind victory over Marshall. The Miami, Fla., native racked up 104 of his yards in the fourth quarter, including 87 on the final drive of the game that sealed the Mountaineers' win. On a breakaway run with less than two minutes remaining, instead of scoring and giving Marshall the ball back, Noel slid down at the 5-yard line to allow App State to kneel out the rest of the clock for the one point win. - Sun Belt Football

Before transferring from Tulsa, the rangy 6-foot-2 cornerback had conversations with his family about turning pro but wanted to use his final year to compete against the best. He played in nine games last year and recorded 29 tackles, a forced fumble and three passes defended. "I knew I had three options: go to the NFL, go back to Tulsa and stay there for my last year, or transfer," he said. "I decided to come back just so I can grow as a person and grow into the young man that I know I will be and just develop as a player a little bit more." - Post-Dispatch

Tyler Badie's never had to be the dominating presence in Missouri's running back room before now. In his three-plus years in Columbia, there's always been a more experienced and older tailback in one of the seats next to him such as Larry Rountree and Damarea Crockett. Badie might not be the eldest among the running backs in 2021, with Dawson Downing entering his sixth season of college football, but he's expected to be the Tigers' primary running back for the first time. "I feel like titles are kind of overemphasized," Badie said. "I don't want to feel like I'm the guy. I just want to be a helpful person to the team. I feel like roles and titles get thrown around way too much and I feel like it's more of a team effort that helps the whole team win. That's the biggest thing for us." It's hard to ignore Badie's potential, however. In 2019, he was the first running back to lead the Tigers in pass receptions in a season since Brock Olivo accomplished the feat in 1995. Last season, Badie wasn't far off from headlining that category again with 28 catches, seven behind leader Keke Chism. He tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns (2) alongside Tauskie Dove and Niko Hea. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Slowly but surely, a trio of former Tulsa players and coaches found their new homes at Missouri. First it was secondary coach Aaron Fletcher, who came to Columbia the same week spring camp started this year. Then, through the transfer portal, two of Fletchers' former pupils reunited with him. Akayleb Evans committed to the Tigers in June, followed soon after by Allie Green. "They'll definitely be a tremendous help," Fletcher said. "... They're happy to be here. Coach (Eli) Drinkwitz has done a wonderful job with them. The team has done a wonderful job of welcoming those guys in. So it's been huge, it's been a blessing." Fletcher thought Green and Evans might've gone to the NFL before he left Tulsa, making a second chance to coach them even more special.

Evans said he considered three options after the 2020 season ended - declaring for the NFL Draft, going back to Tulsa or transferring. Evans decided to remain in college, and he was a full participant in the Golden Hurricane's spring practice. After the spring, Evans talked things over with his family and determined it was best to enter the transfer portal. "Even when I entered the portal, I wasn't 100% sure I was going to leave Tulsa," Evans said. "And I was upfront with that to the coaches there." - Columbia Daily Tribune

  08/22/21 - Case CookrSr/2022, Missouri + More +

Mizzou announced team captains on Sunday, as voted by teammates: offensive guard Case Cook, quarterback Connor Bazelak and safety Martez Manuel. Cook is a two-time captain after earning the honor last season, too. "It means a lot, especially this being the second time," Cook said after Monday's practice. "Like I've said before, and these guys probably know I wouldn't be anything without these guys, so for them to select me to be their leader and our captain it's like the greatest honor in my mind that you can receive as a member of a team, especially a football team." Cook will be a three-year starter at right guard, while Bazelak and Manuel both became regular starters last year. - Post-Dispatch

Linebacker Blaze Alldredge has already made a strong impression on the coaching staff, so much that he earned his jersey number before his first official practice. The graduate transfer from Rice will wear No. 25, which has been a linebacker tradition at Mizzou for more than a decade since the passing of Aaron O'Neal in 2005. Jamal Brooks had worn 25 for the last four years but transferred to South Alabama this offseason. MU's other newcomers wore blank jerseys Friday. - Post-Dispatch

Blaze Alldredge has never met Nick Bolton. Alldredge, a Rice graduate transfer, steps into the linebacker room at Missouri after the December departure of Bolton, a former All-American and current Kansas City Chief. Both changes of scenery appear to have been the right moves. Alldredge brings a veteran presence to a relatively inexperienced MU position group, and Bolton is turning heads at training camp with two straight days of interceptions off Patrick Mahomes this week in 7-on-7 play. "It's definitely big shoes to come in and try and fill," Alldredge said Thursday of Bolton's influence. "But the truth is, that was a big factor in my decision. I wanted to come to a place that had experience with great linebackers and sending guys to the league. And the great thing about it has just been that nobody wants me to be Nick Bolton.

"Obviously he's a great linebacker. Everybody understands that I'm my own player. I have my own identity, my own style. And the truth of the matter, like I've told a lot of guys, is that we have a great defense. I don't need to come in and be Superman and try and save the day or anything. I just need to come in and be myself, which time has shown is a pretty good college football player, and just make sure that I get lined up and help other guys get lined up and let everybody play ball." Alldredge is confident like Bolton and has the credentials to back up his words. As an Owl, he won the George Martin Award twice, given to Rice's team MVP, the first defensive player in school history to win the award in consecutive years. - Columbia Daily Tribune

  07/27/21 - Case CookrSr/2022, Missouri + More +

As Case Cook strolled into a small conference room on the third floor of The Wynfrey Hotel on Thursday for his first meeting with reporters since chopping off his mullet, he still beamed with confidence. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Cook was decked out for the occasion at SEC Media Days in a navy suit, yellow tie and cowboy boots. His footwear, he said, served as a tribute to rural Missourians. Cook's a country boy at heart, after all, coming from Carrollton, Georgia, about 45 minutes from Atlanta and near the Alabama border. Cook, primed to start along the Missouri offensive line for the third straight season, is the Tigers' lone returning team captain from the 2020 season. Nick Bolton and Larry Rountree have both since departed for the NFL. "I'm a leader on this team and I don't feel bad about coming out and saying that. Yeah, I'm a team leader," Cook said. "It's up to me to make sure the guys are coming into work every day and we're heading in the right direction. As we've said before, pulling the spear in the same direction, all trying to push in that way.

"That's our team mission, our team goal. My role is really just to make sure that we're doing what we're supposed to be doing, and I'm a shining example of how it's supposed to be done every day. I can't have a bad day, I can't have an off day. "I've got to be there. I've got to be ready to roll all the time." Cook has started at right guard in Missouri's past 20 games, one of only two Tiger offensive linemen to start every 2020 game, joining center Mike Maietti, who is also back for the 2021 season after exercising his extra year of eligibility allowed by the NCAA. - Columbia Daily Tribune

An eventful offseason for the University of Tulsa is winding down, one that saw starting cornerbacks Akayleb Evans and Allie Green IV among those who hit the transfer portal. "I'm sure with some of the things that happened over the spring and summer here, people are out there thinking, 'What's going on? Why is this happening?'" seventh-year coach Philip Montgomery said. "This is just how it is (in the portal era). "You can have great relationships with all your players and all of that, but at some point in time they still may choose to do something else. And you can't do anything about it." Evans and Green, who spent four years at TU and started a combined 48 games while developing into NFL prospects, landed at Missouri. They followed former position coach Aaron Fletcher, who left the Hurricane staff in December.

TU signed an especially small class in December and February while expecting almost everyone to return amid the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of COVID-19. To address post-spring departures that included backups at cornerback and safety, Montgomery wound up getting an additional six players from the portal. "The portal's here to stay, so it's about learning how to try to adapt to it," Montgomery said. "It's going to open up some avenues and it's going to allow you to replace some things. It's also going to cause you problems on your rosters. - Tulsa World

The Missouri football team continues to remake its secondary with pieces from the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. On Wednesday, the Tigers secured a verbal commitment from former Tulsa cornerback Allie Green IV, a veteran starter and the second Tulsa cornerback to commit to the Tigers in the last week. Green and Akayleb Evans will soon reunite with their Tulsa position coach, Aaron Fletcher, who joined Eli Drinkwitz's staff to coach the Tigers' secondary in February. Green (6-foot-3, 206 pound) started 25 games for Tulsa at cornerback from 2018-20 with one interception and 11 career breakups. The Austin, Texas, native has one remaining year of eligibility. With Green and Evans at cornerback last year, Tulsa ranked 18th nationally in passing yards allowed per game (189.6) and 19th in opponent passer rating (119.4). - Post-Dispatch

Former Tulsa cornerback Akayleb Evans, top middle, announced his graduate transfer decision Friday night. Pictured, Evans celebrates a sack of Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers in 2020. The crowded pursuit of former Tulsa cornerback Akayleb Evans ended with a victory for Missouri on Friday night. Evans, a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining, announced his commitment to the Tigers on Instagram. Evans previously named Notre Dame, Texas, Texas Tech, Missouri and Jackson State as his top five choices before making his decision. Notre Dame offered Evans a spot on its roster on May 17 and hosted him for a visit last week. But that wasn't enough for the Irish to land Evans and his 23 career starts. The 6-foot-2, 188-pound Evans played in 30 games with 73 tackles and 11 pass breakups across four seasons at Tulsa. He played in only three games as a junior in 2019 due to a shoulder injury, but started nine games for the Golden Hurricane last season. - Indianapolis Star/News

Over the course of 24 hours, Missouri football landed two commitments from the transfer portal who are both eligible to play starting this fall. First to commit was offensive lineman Connor Wood on Thursday, who played for two seasons at FCS-level Montana State, including as an All-American honorable mention in 2019. Soon after Wood's commitment, Missouri head football coach Eli Drinkwitz posted two of his signature MU bat signal tweets, signaling another player was about to enter the Tigers' fold. Around that time, former Tulsa defensive back Akayleb Evans posted on Instagram a 24-hour countdown clock to his commitment. Evans had listed his top-five destinations as Missouri, Notre Dame, Texas, Texas Tech and Jackson State, taking visits with the Fighting Irish and MU since. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Missouri is in a solid place to transition that production to the presumed No. 1 back, Tyler Badie, who played in a backup role the past three seasons, yet still saw consistent playing time. Badie was second on MU with 242 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 2020, with his skills also being used in the passing game, as well as kickoff returns. Badie, a senior, has a different skill set than Rountree, though they're a similar height and weight. Badie is 1 inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter. Rountree is the more physical runner of the two. He didn't mind plowing through a defender to get the extra yard. Badie prefers to run around you and tire defenders out. While Badie doesn't shy away from contact, he's got a lower center of gravity, making his speed a valuable asset. He's hard to tackle in open space, especially outside the tackles. Badie's overall production at Missouri has been solid. But rushing for 242 yards in 2020 falls short of the 437-yard and 457-yard marks he set in 2018 and 2019, respectively. - Columbia Daily Tribune

Two of the central figures within the University of Tulsa's veteran defense are seemingly headed elsewhere. Starting cornerbacks Akayleb Evans and Allie Green IV are in the transfer portal, a source close to the program confirmed. The pair, expected to have NFL potential, played as true freshmen in 2017 and has started a combined 48 games. Since Evans recently entered the portal, he has received numerous offers including from Notre Dame and Texas. Because of a medical hardship waiver stemming from the 2019 season, he has two years of eligibility remaining, including the additional year extended by the NCAA as a result of COVID-19. Green, who has one year left, entered the portal this week and reported an offer from Louisiana Tech on Tuesday. He had 24 tackles in 2020, as did Evans. - Tulsa World
