  09/21 WEEK 3 SEC DEFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK: Amaree Williams, Mississippi State,...Mississippi State's Amaree Williams, a junior defensive end from North Palm Beach, Fla., led the Bulldogs with 10 tackles, all solo, in the week three win at South Carolina. He notched one sack for a yard and two tackles for loss for a total of five yards, in addition to a quarterback hurry, and also intercepted a pass on a play that was negated due to a penalty. Williams and the Bulldog defense held South Carolina to minus-15 yards on 10 plays in the Gamecocks' first four drives of the second half, keeping them at bay as State completed its largest comeback win on the road since 2021.   09/14 WEEK 2 SEC CO-OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK: Canon Boone, Mississippi State, Position: Center,...Mississippi State's Canon Boone, a sixth-year center from Kemah, Texas, started at center and played 75 offensive snaps in the week two win at receiving-votes Minnesota. The Bulldogs rushed for 252 yards as a unit on Saturday, marking the second time in the Lebby era with 250-plus rushing yards in two consecutive games. Saturday's game was also the second consecutive game that a Bulldog rusher ran for 100-plus yards and two-plus touchdowns.   Blake Shapen threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Evans III on fourth down with 18 seconds left, lifting Mississippi State over Arkansas 38-35 on Saturday for its first Southeastern Conference victory of the season. The Bulldogs trailed by 14 points with 13:43 left before Shapen led scoring drives of 75, 43 and 69 yards to overcome the deficit. Arkansas, which entered with the seventh-ranked offense in FBS, lost a total of 15 yards on its final three drives. Davon Booth started the fourth-quarter comeback with a 2-yard touchdown run and Kyle Ferrie followed on the next drive with a 46-yard field goal to trim the deficit to four points. The Razorbacks ran just three plays on the ensuing drive before punting, setting up Mississippi State's go-ahead score.

Shapen completed 16 of 28 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. He missed the middle part of the game after being hit on a roughing-the-passer penalty on the first play of the third quarter. Back-up Kamario Taylor entered and led two scoring drives, one capped with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Evans and the other with a 20-yard touchdown run. Arkansas led 13-7 at halftime behind a touchdown pass from Taylen Green to Rohan Jones and two field goals by Scott Starzyk. Green added an 8-yard rushing touchdown followed by a 20-yard score on the ground by Mike Washington Jr. that provided Arkansas with a 14-point lead midway through the third quarter. Taylor and Braylen Russell traded touchdowns on the next two possessions before the Bulldogs' rally. Green finished 19-of-31 passing for 194 yards and a score with another 46 yards rushing on 17 carries. Washington added 116 yards rushing with a touchdown. Arkansas hurt itself by committing 18 penalties for 193 yards. Brenan Thompson, who caught a 32-yard pass on fourth-and-7 to put the Bulldogs into Arkansas territory on their go-ahead drive, had six catches for 107 yards.   Mississippi State moved to 4-0 for the first time since 2014 with a 38-10 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday. The Bulldogs navigated sloppy play for most of the game but pulled away late in the win. Mississippi State trailed 3-0 after the first possession and led just 14-10 going into halftime before outscoring the Huskies 17-0 in the second half. The ground game is what got the Bulldogs there as they averaged 6.0 yards per carry 49 attempts for 292 yards against a defense that has been stingy against the run. NIU (1-2) came into the game surrendering just 74.0 yards per game, including holding Maryland under 100 yards a week ago.

Leading the charge on the ground for Mississippi State was South Alabama transfer Fluff Bothwell, who notched 100 yards for the first time in his Bulldogs career. Bothwell rushed 17 times for 101 yards and Davon Booth scored two touchdowns to lead the way. Xavier Gayten came in and had four carries for 45 yards and scored a touchdown late in the game. Blake Shapen was 12 of 20 for 160 yards and a touchdown and had 11 carries for 51 yards. The Bulldogs had 452 yards of total offense and overcame 11 penalties for 104 yards. Mississippi State was 4-for-4 on 4th downs. NIU had 267 yards of total offense with 125 yards on the ground. Jahron Manning made seven tackles to lead the way for the MSU defense and Isaac Smith had six tackles fand his first career interception.   Mississippi State scored on its first four possessions and never let up and went on to roll Alcorn State 56-0 on Saturday. The Bulldog offense was efficient all game but especially with its starting unit as Blake Shapen went 10 for 14 for 173 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Shapen threw a 73-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Mosley on the first play of the game and it was all Bulldogs from there. Fluff Bothwell also helped set the tone offensively as the sophomore running back rushed 12 times for 93 yards and two touchdowns before hitting the bench late in the second quarter.

Anthony Evans led the team with four catches for 66 yards and a touchdown while returning three punts for 97 yards. Brenen Thompson had two catches for 52 yards and a score fresh off of his breakout performance against Arizona State. Freshman quarterback Kamario Taylor wowed the fans in the first quarter getting a toss from Shapen and throwing a 42-yard score to Thompson. Taylor finished 2 of 3 for 46 yards and the passing score and rushed three times for 40 yards. Former Florida State QB Luke Kromenhoek had his first touchdown as a Bulldog. The Bulldogs (2-0) outgained the Braves 514-155 with a 282-68 edge on the ground. MSU was 4 of 6 on 3rd downs and 2 of 2 on 4th down while averaging 9.5 yards per play.   AJ Swann threw for 292 yards, Rashod Dubinion ran for 194 yards, and Appalachian State defeated Lindenwood 20-13 on Saturday. Swann got the Mountaineers (2-0) off to a fast start, throwing a 72-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Stroman on the first play from scrimmage. However, three lost fumbles and an interception kept Appalachian State from putting their FCS opponent away.

The third lost fumble led to Nate Glantz's 24-yard touchdown pass to Rico Bond that made it 20-13 with 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Lions (0-2) then recovered an onside kick but Glantz was intercepted by Elijah McCantos on a deep fourth-down pass. Appalachian State gained 503 yards on offense but had four turnovers. Glantz passed for 217 yards but was sacked eight times, leading to the Lions' minus-1 rushing total. - AP College Football

  WEEK 1 SUN BELT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: AJ Swann, App State,(RS Jr., QB - White, Ga.),...Mountaineers redshirt junior quarterback AJ Swann set a record for most passing yards in an App State debut with 368, as the Mountaineers earned a 34-11 win over in-state foe Charlotte. The White, Ga., native completed 31-of-46 passes for three touchdowns—with no interceptions—and added 25 rushing yards in the ground game. Swann led the Mountaineer offense on five-straight scoring drives, scoring 27 unanswered points in the second and third quarters. His 368 passing yards, 31 completions and 46 attempts were all career highs, while App State's 586 yards of total offense were its most since 2022. - Sun Belt Football

  Blake Shapen threw for 270 yards and a touchdown to spearhead Mississippi State's 34-17 season-opening win over Southern Mississippi on Saturday. A dominant third quarter cleared the way for the Bulldogs to take full control of the game. MIssissippi State outgained Southern Miss 199-25 in the quarter and outscored the Golden Eagles 21-0 to take a 31-10 lead. The Bulldogs sputtered on both sides of the ball for most of the first half. MSU had two touchdowns called back on penalties and instead had to settle for two field goals by Kyle Ferrie. The second one, late in the second quarter, made it 13-10 at the half.

Ferrie's first field goal was true from 55 yards, breaking a school record that stood since 1985. MSU's offense outgained the Golden Eagles 462-301, with 185 yards on the ground on 40 carries. Brenen Thompson had seven catches for 92 yards receiving and Seydou Traore had a touchdown on five catches and 77 yards. Marshall transfer and 2024 Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year Braylon Braxton was 26 of 39 for 199 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and rushed for 58 yards on 12 carries for the Golden Eagles. - Mississippi State/AP College Football

  AJ Swann threw three touchdown passes and Rashod Dubinion ran for 111 yards and a score as Appalachian State rolled to a 34-11 win over Charlotte in the Duke's Mayo Classic on Friday night. The game marked Charlotte's Dowell Loggains first game as a head coach at any level and his 49ers took a 3-0 lead on Liam Boyd's 42-yard first-quarter field goal, but the Mountaineers rolled off 27 straight points to make it 27-3 to start the fourth quarter.

Dubinion capped an 81-yard, nine-play drive with a 2-yard TD run and Swann sandwiched a 10-yard pass to Jaden Barnes and a 19-yard strike to Kanen Hamlett around Dominic De Freitas' field goals from 47-and 35-yards out. Swann's final touchdown, a 1-yard toss to Alex Sanchez, capped the scoring. Swann was 31 of 46 passing for 368 yards and Barnes caught six for 134 yards and a score. Appalachian State rolled to 586 yards of offense while holding the 49ers to just 218. Charlotte, which has a whole new coaching staff and a roster that features 57 newcomers, was led by Conner Harrell's 142 yards on 13-for-24 passing.   WEEK 2 SUN BELT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jahron Manning, Old Dominion, (Jr., DB - New Orleans, La.),...Monarchs junior defensive back Jahron Manning led a defensive unit that set the program single-game record with four interceptions in a 20-14 loss to East Carolina. The New Orleans, La., product hauled in his first two career interceptions and added a career-high 10 tackles and a tackle for loss. Manning returned his first interception 45 yards to set up an Old Dominion touchdown and halted an East Carolina drive with his second pick in the end zone.
