  Speed and Williams are two transfers with national championship pedigrees, as well as the length and speed NFL scouts covet to defend on the edge. Williams' injury history could be an issue - he pushed through a back issue last season and wore a cast this spring after a broken arm kept him out of most of Alabama's national championship season in 2020 - but he showed progress in coverage after arriving last summer. An ankle injury hampered Speed after he started three of his 13 games in his final season at Georgia; he entered the portal and arrived in East Lansing shortly after the Bulldogs won the national championship in January. His new MSU teammates raved about Speed's game-breaking ability and talent all spring. - Lansing State Journal

  After transferring to MSU from Western Michigan and sitting out the 2019 season under Dantonio, Reed put together a second impressive year and eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving. He opted to return for his senior season despite being named a first-team All-American by the AFCA as an all-purpose player. Reed will remain the primary target for Payton Thorne and should be on the watch list for major national awards. Despite being just 6 feet and 185 pounds, his ability to run crisp routes and produce in the return game will draw plenty of scouts' eyes all fall. - Lansing State Journal

  Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of Quavaris Crouch's commitment to Michigan State football. He was regarded as one of the Spartans' most prominent acquisitions from the NCAA transfer portal. Crouch, a former four-star recruit who began his career at Tennessee, was viewed as a plug-and-play starter - a promise he fulfilled in his first nine appearances with MSU in 2021. But Crouch's time in East Lansing appears to be over after he re-entered the portal Friday. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior had been out this spring after missing three of the final four games last season because of a knee injury.

When Crouch was on the field, he was an essential cog in MSU's threadbare linebacker corps even though he was seen as a liability in coverage. A superior run defender, he contributed 75 tackles and two sacks in 10 games, logging more than 80 snaps in five of them. But since December, head coach Mel Tucker has buttressed the depth at the inside positions Crouch occupied, adding transfers Aaron Brule and Jacoby Windmon. Tucker also retained sophomore Ma'a Gaoteote after he had a brief stint in the portal. - Detroit News

  North Carolina football signed Ohio State transfer Lejond Cavazos on Monday to help bolster its secondary. The Tar Heels had at least three defensive backs have to sit out the spring game. Cavazos, a 6-foot, 192-pound San Antonio native, will have three years of eligibility remaining after earning a redshirt in 2020. He played in 11 games last season and totaled 11 tackles with two pass breakups. "I want to say how excited I am to be a Tar Heel," Cavazos said in a statement. "Everything about being at North Carolina fit what I was looking for. It's a prestigious University, offering a great education, and the football program is on the rise." Brown has previously stated his philosophy is to only bring in transfers who could be starters. Last year, Tennessee transfer running back Ty Chandler was signed to bolster an inexperienced group. - Raleigh News Observer

  There were plenty of new names and faces on the field for Michigan State on Saturday during its final practice of the spring, but there was one who stood out. That was cornerback Ameer Speed, the graduate transfer who won a national championship last season at Georgia before opting to play his final season at Michigan State for coach Mel Tucker. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, it's easy to understand why spotting Speed among the other defensive backs was simple. But it's about more than just his size. It's about the way Speed plays. Early in spring practice, Michigan State wide receiver Jayden Reed talked about the difficulty of playing against the length and athleticism of Speed. He reiterated that Saturday, saying it's not something you see every day in the Big Ten, but will in the NFL. "You typically don't see a corner that tall, that long," Reed said. "That's definitely the one thing that definitely helped me, because at the next level you'll see a bunch of different guys...So, that prepares me for competition like that. You don't see that on an everyday basis. So that can help me adapt to when I have to deal with that." - Detroit News

  Michigan State football linebacker Ben VanSumeren withdrew from the NCAA transfer portal 35 days after entering it. The redshirt senior remained on the roster throughout the past month, practicing with the team before playing in the Michigan State's "spring game" on Saturday. He is the second Spartans linebacker this offseason to explore a potential transfer before deciding against it. Sophomore Ma'a Gaoetote previously spent 13 days in the portal before choosing to remain in East Lansing this past winter. VanSumeren appeared in all 13 games last season, logging 122 defensive snaps while contributing on special teams. - Lansing State Journal
