Carey said on Monday that quarterback Anthony Russo was having an MRI on his throwing shoulder. While the team didn't announce the results of the MRI, Carey, on Tuesday in a statement to The Inquirer, said, "Anthony did not practice today, hope to have him back on the field tomorrow." Russo, a right-handed thrower, attempted 63 passes in Saturday's loss at Memphis. As far as Temple's depth chart is concerned, the backup quarterback is listed as Trad Beatty or Re-al Mitchell. Both are redshirt sophomores. Mitchell is a transfer from Iowa State. Neither has seen action this season. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Kenneth Walker III keeps producing for the Wake Forest football team. On Saturday he helped turn a close game in the Deacons' favor with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a 40-23 win over Virginia at Truist Field. Walker, who took a majority of the snaps at running back after a slight injury sidelined Christian Beal-Smith, rushed for 128 yards and scored three touchdowns. Not only was Walker selected as ACC running back of the week, he will enter the Virginia Tech game Saturday ranked fourth in the nation with seven touchdowns, which also leads the ACC. Walker, a sophomore, is averaging 5.7 yards per carry in four games. - Winston Salem Journal

  10/18/20 - Jarek BroussardSr/2023, Michigan State, 5-08, 192 (DS#67 RB) + More +

Alex Fontenot and Jaren Mangham are both back after combining for more than 1,300 yards a year ago. Then, there's Ashaad Clayton, a four-star recruit who will look to steal playing time in the backfield. During the first scrimmage of the preseason, however, the Colorado running back that stole the spotlight was Jarek Broussard. CU's scrimmage at Folsom Field on Saturday was closed to media and fans, but head coach Karl Dorrell said Broussard, a redshirt sophomore who spent the 2019 season rehabilitating a knee injury, was impressive and got into the end zone a couple of times.

"I felt he ran and stuck his feet in the ground, making cuts that you wouldn't do if you are questioning whether you're back healthy or not," Dorrell said. "I felt Jarek did a nice job today. He made a couple of really nice runs. It was good to see that. His confidence is going to be huge from what he did today." A 5-foot-9, 185-pounder from Dallas, Broussard was listed fourth on the preseason pencil depth chart, which didn't include Clayton, the highest-rated member of CU's 2020 recruiting class. Fontenot (874 yards, five touchdowns in 2019) and Mangham (441 yards, three TDs) lead the way, while Clayton figures to get into the mix at some point. Sophomore Joe Davis is fighting for playing time, too. - Daily Camera

Kenneth Walker III had 123 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead 75-yard scoring, run, and Wake Forest beat Virginia 40-23 Saturday. On the first play from scrimmage after Brian Delaney's 32-yard field goal that pulled Virginia into a tie at 23-all early in the fourth quarter, Walker took a handoff, bounced left, broke free from a Virginia tackler and raced down the left sideline. Walker's run provided a big momentum shift, coming only seconds after Virginia, which fell behind 14-0 in the game's first four minutes, seemed to have found a way to stop the Wake offense. Virginia's Perris Jones muffed the ensuing pooch kickoff while attempting to make a fair catch, setting up Walker for a 4-yard TD run that put the Demon Deacons (2-2, 1-2 ACC) in control for good.

Prior to Walker's 75-yard run, the Cavs (1-3, 1-3 ACC) had shut down the Wake running game and kept consistent pressure on Sam Hartman, who was sacked three times. The Deacons had suffered a 45-42 loss at N.C. State in their previous ACC game. Wake finished with 174 yards rushing on 42 attempts. The Deacons were hampered by 12 penalties for 119 yards. Hartman did create time to hit on some long pass plays. The sophomore completed 16 of 27 passes for 309 yards and one TD. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Anthony Russo threw for four touchdowns and Amir Tyler stuffed a two-point conversion try with a minute to go as Temple beat South Florida 39-37 Saturday. Tyler, who also forced a fumble in the first half, dropped Noah Johnson for a loss after USF scored on Leonard Parker's 1-yard run. Russo threw a 13-yard score to Randle Jones to complete a 19-point run that left the Owls (1-1, 1-1 American) ahead 39-31 with 4 1/2 minutes left. Arnold Ebiketie picked up a bungled USF handoff and carried it 11 yards for a 32-31 lead after a two-point run failed. Russo started the rally from an 11-point deficit with a 12-yard TD pass to Branden Mack with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Russo was 30-of-42 passing including two interceptions. Two of his touchdown passes went to Jadan Blue. Jordan McCloud threw for 182 yards on 15-of-26 passing and three scores for the Bulls (1-4, 0-3 American). USF went ahead 21-17 with just over a minute left in a wild close to the first half. Johnson scored on a 2-yard run that came after Mekhi LaPointe returned an interception to the Temple 35. The Bulls then recovered an onside kick but fumbled the ball back to the Owls two plays later. Temple had a field-goal attempt blocked on the final play of the half. No fans were permitted for Temple's home opener. - Temple/AP College Football

  10/13/20 - Connor HeywardrSr/2022, Michigan State, 5-11, 237 (DS#2 FB) + More +

Connor Heyward entered last fall as Michigan State football's starting running back. Four games into the season, he entered the transfer portal. Thus began a circuitous journey that ended with the running back remaining a Spartan. That decision came after plenty of soul-searching, conversations with a family that knows athletic success - Heywood's father was an NFL star, two of Heyward's brothers played Division I football and a third brother played Division I basketball - and a clean slate with new coach Mel Tucker. Heyward's story is one of self-observation, humility, candor, confidence and desire. To prove himself again, on and off the field. To retool himself mentally and physically. And to show his willingness to do whatever it takes to return to the good graces of MSU fans and teammates. "When the plan was for me leaving, you just don't know what you're gonna do from the next step," the fourth-year junior said on a video call Thursday night. "There was a lot of schools reaching out, and they wanted me to go there. But ultimately, my heart was still here and I felt like I had some unfinished business." - Lansing State Journal

Auburn sophomore running back Harold Joiner has entered the transfer portal, per reports. The news comes after Joiner participated in but did not receive a single carry in the Tigers' first two games of 2020. Joiner played in 17 games during his time at Auburn and took 15 carries for 103 yards and two touchdowns and also logged six receptions for 128 yards and one touchdown during that time. He was responsible for Auburn quarterback Bo Nix's longest pass in 2019, as he caught a 78-yard pass against Ole Miss. Joiner signed with Auburn in its class of 2018 as a four-star recruit out of Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham. He scored 16 touchdowns as a senior in high school, and his ability earned him a spot in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl as well as the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game. Joiner's departure would leave Auburn with junior Shaun Shivers, sophomore D.J. Williams, redshirt freshman Mark-Antony Richards and true freshman Tank Bigsby as its scholarship running backs. - Opelika-Auburn News

MSU nearly had to start from scratch up front until senior Jacub Panasiuk reversed his August decision to opt out. The 6-4, 250-pound defensive end is MSU's only returning starter on the defensive line; he had 11 of his 34 tackles for a loss, including five sacks and six QB hurries last season. "I know this, it made us better coaches when he came back," joked Hazelton, who ran Kansas State's defense last year. "I mean, that's what you want - a guy who can rush the passer and do some things and provide a little leadership. It's just the amount of plays and the experience that he's got, just made us better by him coming back." - Lansing State Journal

It won't be surprising if Big Ten players who originally opted out of the college football season due to the coronavirus pandemic changed their minds. And with the Big Ten's announcement on Wednesday that the league would return to play the weekend of Oct. 24, we've already seen one Michigan State player reverse course. Linebacker Marcel Lewis, a redshirt freshman, announced on Twitter shortly after the reinstatement news broke that he'd be returning to the team this season. Lewis originally announced on Aug. 8 that he'd sit out the season after losing a family member to COVID-19 and didn't want to risk playing. - Lansing State Journal

Ronald Williams Jr. wasn't a full-time starter as a redshirt freshmen at Hutchinson Community College, but he played enough to attract FBS schools. He had the credits to graduate and opportunities to jump to a four-year school. He told Andrew Krause - at the time Hutchinson Community College's defensive backs coach, now its tight ends coach, special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator - he wanted to return. He thought he could be better. Williams then developed into the prospect that drew Alabama's attention, and could start for UA right away.

Williams is one player in UA's highly-contested battle for playing time at the star and money positions in the secondary. He never would have reached that level if not for his final season at Hutchinson. "That spring is when he became who he is now," Krause said. "He became a student of the game, a complete and total technician. He looked to perfect every movement and every aspect of what we did here." - Montgomery Advertiser

Russo understands competition. He was the backup his redshirt sophomore year when starter Frank Nutile was injured before the third game. Russo played so well that Nutile never got his job back. Last season Russo improved statistically, but he had some hiccups. He completed 58.7% of his passes for 2,861 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions for the 8-5 Owls. It took time to get comfortable in a new offense under Carey and offensive coordinator Mike Uremovich.

Now in his second year in this system, Russo thinks he will be able to do more, but with less. He said that he came to camp 14 pounds lighter. The 6-foot-4 Russo said he now weighs 234 pounds. Uremovich said he wants Russo to be more of a running threat. "Last year I kind of wasn't in the best shape of my life, I wasn't able to be a threat with my legs," Russo said. "Sophomore year, I was a little bit more mobile, was able to extend plays a little bit better." - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

  08/07/20 - Jordan ReidrSr/2022, Michigan State, 6-4, 315 (DS#79 OG) + More +

Michigan State just lost another returning starter due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Senior starting right tackle Jordan Reid announced via Twitter on Friday morning he is opting out of the 2020 season. That move comes the same day the Spartans started fall camp. Reid is the second member of the team to publicly opt out, following senior starting defensive end Jacub Panasiuk’s announcement on Wednesday. Reid said he will be graduating in December, plans on returning to Michigan State for his fifth year and noted he talked to head coach Mel Tucker and offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic about the decision. - Michigan Live

Michigan State's football team is back on the field, but if it, indeed, plays this fall, it will do so without defensive end Jacub Panasiuk. The senior announced on Twitter Wednesday that he intends to sit out the 2020 season as a redshirt and return for his final season with the Spartans in 2021. Panasiuk, the younger brother of former Michigan State defensive tackle Mike Panasiuk, has 80 tackles, including 18 1/2 for a loss, eight sacks and four forced fumbles in 38 career games. Last season, Panasiuk had 34 tackles, including 11 tackles for a loss and five sacks. - The Detroit News
