  New faces are starting to arrive in the Michigan State football program. On Sunday, the Spartans welcomed early enrollees in the 2021 recruiting class as well as a handful of transfers. Quarterback Anthony Russo from Temple, offensive lineman Jarrett Horst from Arkansas State, defensive end Drew Jordan from Duke and running back Kenneth Walker III from Wake Forest - a group that all committed to Michigan State after the end of the 2020 season - are all officially enrolled, a program spokesman confirmed. - Detroit News

  Matt Coghlin is coming back to Michigan State football. Again. The kicker announced via Twitter on Wednesday he plans to take advantage of the extra year of eligibility and return for his sixth season in East Lansing. He joins fellow fifth-year senior defensive end Drew Beesley in confirming he will use the bonus year, while defensive end Jacub Panasiuk also is expected to return this fall for his fifth season. Coghlin, who scored a rushing touchdown on a trick play at Indiana in 2018, became the fifth MSU player to top 300 career points this fall (305) and booted his fourth game-winning field goal in a 29-20 upset of No. 13 Northwestern. - Lansing State Journal

  The turnover of Michigan State football's roster continued Friday. Javez Alexander, a redshirt sophomore receiver who appeared in one game with the Spartans, has entered the NCAA transfer portal. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Alexander is the 15th MSU player to seek a move to another school since mid-November. A converted quarterback from Sandusky, Ohio, Alexander arrived in East Lansing as a three-star recruit in 2018. - Lansing State Journal

  Illinois football's top tight end in 2020 will be back with the program in 2021. Daniel Barker announced via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon that he won't leave the team early, with the junior set to return as the Illini's leading pass-catcher from the season prior. Barker has played in 21 games during his Illinois tenure, racking up 46 catches for 625 yards and seven scores. He'll be under the direction of a new tight ends coach in his senior year, as Cory Patterson has shifted from that role to running backs coach under new Illini coach Bret Bielema. - News Gazette Tribune

  Mel Tucker dipped back into the transfer portal to help boost Michigan State football's backfield. The Spartans landed a commitment from Wake Forest transfer running back Kenneth Walker III on Tuesday, their fifth player inbound to East Lansing from the portal since the 2020 season ended Dec. 12. The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder from Arlington, Tennessee, played two years with the Demon Deacons before opting out Dec. 8 and skipping their final two games. As a sophomore, he ran for 579 yards and 13 touchdowns, which was tied for 10th in the Football Bowl Subdivision this season. Walker leaves Wake Forest with 1,158 yards rushing and 17 TDs. He had eight carries for 24 yards against MSU in the Spartans' 2019 Pinstripe Bowl win over the Demon Deacons. - Lansing State Journal

  One half of Wake Forest's "Thunder and Lightning" running back combination has entered the transfer portal. Kenneth Walker III, who finished his sophomore season after opting out before the final regular-season game with Louisville on Dec. 12 because of COVID-19 concerns, has entered his name into the portal. Sophomore safety Trey Rucker also has entered the portal. Walker played in the Deacons' first six games, rushing for 13 touchdowns and 579 yards, as he and Christian Beal-Smith powered their rushing attack. - Winston Salem Journal

  The Michigan State football team has seen 13 players enter the transfer portal this season. But the Spartans have also been active in recruiting players from the portal. And on Thursday, Mel Tucker secured his fourth incoming transfer player - and his second former 4-star recruit. Defensive end Drew Jordan, who played the last four years at Duke and was a starter the last three seasons, announced his transfer to MSU on Twitter. The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Jordan played in all but one game from 2017-2020 and has started nearly every game the past three years. This fall, Jordan finished with 35 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries in 11 games as the Blue Devils went 2-9. - Lansing State Journal

  The roster turnover for Michigan State continued on Wednesday when sophomore long snapper Jude Pedrozo entered the NCAA transfer portal. Pedrozo became the 12th Spartan to enter the portal since the season began and the seventh since the season ended late last week when Michigan State's final scheduled game with Maryland was canceled because of COVID-19 issues in the Terrapins' program. Pedrozo played in all 13 games as a freshman in 2019, starting 12, and started all seven games this season. He was rated a five-star long-snapping prospect by Rubio Long Snapping coming out of Westerville (Ohio) South. - Detroit News

  Michigan State coach Mel Tucker continued to work the transfer portal on Saturday, securing the commitment of offensive lineman Jarrett Horst of Arkansas State. At 6-foot-6 and 304 pounds, Horst was third-team All-Sun Belt Conference in 2019 and entered 2020 on the Outland Trophy watch list while earning all-conference honors from Phil Steele and second team from Athlon Sports. Horst, a native of Middleton, Wis., made his commitment in a Twitter post on Saturday night, becoming the third player this week to announce he is transferring to Michigan State. He joins graduate transfer quarterback Anthony Russo of Temple and third-year sophomore running back Harold Joiner III from Auburn.   A former Auburn top running back recruit is headed to the Big Ten. Harold Joiner, a Mountain Brook native who left the Tigers program in early October, announced Thursday evening that he will transfer to Michigan State. Joiner, the No. 5 ranked running back nationally in the 2018 recruiting class according the 247Sports Composite rankings, was Auburn's fourth-highest ranked signee within that 2018 class. All four out of those top four - quarterback Joey Gatewood, wide receiver/defensive back Matthew Hill, defensive lineman Coynis Miller and Joiner - have now left the Tigers program. - Birmingham News

As a wide receiver, Reed leads the team and ranks 13th in the Big Ten with 33 receptions for 407 yards (58.1 ypg; 12.3 avg.).
