An Alabama backup defensive back has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Ronald Williams, a former four-star junior college signee who was part of the Crimson Tide's 2020 recruiting class, went into the portal on Friday, AL.com has learned. Although Williams was viewed as a potential immediate starter at nickel back when he signed with the Tide, it was then-freshmen Malachi Moore and Brian Branch who emerged as the team's top two options at the position during 2020 fall camp. Williams was then set back by an arm injury that caused him to miss the beginning part of the season, ended up playing in just three games as a reserve and didn't seem to be in line to be a starter this year. - Birmingham News

  04/03/21 - Jarek BroussardSr/2023, Michigan State, 5-08, 192 (DS#67 RB) + More +

After Colorado's Jarek Broussard was caught from behind on a trio of long runs at Arizona on Dec. 5, his coaches joked that if he wasn't wearing a knee brace, he would have scored. "I think we made enough jokes about it that ever since we started the offseason, he hasn't worn it," CU head coach Karl Dorrell said Wednesday after the Buffaloes completed their second practice of spring. "He got rid of the Linus blanket." Broussard recovered from two torn ACLs in his left knee to bust loose last season. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound running back finished third in the country in rushing (149.17 yards per game) was named Pac-12 offensive player of the year.

Wearing the brace provided some comfort last season, but ditching it this spring is another step in his progression. "Personally, looking at film from last year, I've noticed that the brace kind of restricted me to a lot of things," he said. "This spring, I'm going without the brace to try to see how it's different and honestly, I feel a lot better, I feel a lot faster, I feel more elusive. Right now it's going good." Two practices into spring, the Buffs haven't been in pads, but Dorrell said Broussard "looks fabulous. He looks faster, which is what we all anticipated he would be without a brace." - Daily Camera

From Lorenzo White in the George Perles era to Mark Dantonio's days when the likes of Javon Ringer and Jeremy Langford were piling up yards and touchdowns, the Spartans have always had a powerful running attack that more often featured a standout back. Tucker is hoping to get some of that back this season and one of the newest arrivals might just become the latest workhorse for the Spartans. After scoring 13 touchdowns in just seven games at Wake Forest last season as a sophomore, Kenneth Walker III transferred to Michigan State and is already turning heads just more than a week into his first spring with the Spartans.

"He's the same guy that we saw on tape," Tucker said of Walker. "He gives great effort, he's strong, has got great quickness, he has balance and body control, he can change direction, run through the smoke and has good hands. He's a tireless worker. I haven't seen him loaf one time and a drill. He hasn't loafed in our group work or team work. Every rep, he makes the most of it and I'm glad we have him." It's easy to see why Tucker and running backs coach William Peagler liked Walker so much. His 13 touchdowns last season tied for third in the ACC and his average of 72.4 yards a game was 10th. In three straight games late in the season against Virginia, Campbell and N.C. State, Walker ran for more than 100 yards in each while scoring a total of seven touchdowns. - Detroit News

  03/26/21 - Jordan ReidrSr/2022, Michigan State, 6-4, 315 (DS#79 OG) + More +

Two of Michigan State football's most experienced players are not returning in 2021. Tight end Matt Dotson and right tackle Jordan Reid are not listed on the roster, which came out Tuesday morning as the Spartans opened their first spring practices under second-year coach Mel Tucker. Reid opted out of playing in 2020 due to concerns over COVID-19. The 6-5, 315-pound Detroit Cass Tech product started 27 straight games at right tackle before that and was the lone offensive lineman to play every game during the 2018 and '19 seasons. - Lansing State Journal

  03/24/21 - Matt DotsonrSr/2022, Michigan State, 6-5, 240 (DS#999 TE) + More +

Michigan State opened spring practice on Tuesday morning, and it did so without some familiar names on the roster. Tight end Matt Dotson, who coach Mel Tucker said last month would be back for another season, was among those not listed on the spring roster the Spartans released on Tuesday. Also not listed was offensive lineman Jordan Reid, who opted out of playing in 2020 because of COVID-19, along with wide receiver Laress Nelson and defensive back Tre Person. All four were seniors last season that would have been using the extra year of eligibility offered by the NCAA. Dotson would have been Michigan State's most experienced tight end, while Reid started 27 straight games at right tackle before deciding not to play last fall. Person played in six games last season while Nelson missed the entire season with an undisclosed injury. - Detroit News

The same day Michigan State began spring practice, it landed another potentially key piece to the roster from the transfer portal. Minnesota linebacker Itayvion Brown announced on Twitter he had committed to the Spartans, immediately adding talent and depth to a position group that entered spring practice lacking in experience and depth. Brown (6-foot-4, 235 pounds) was a four-star recruit in the 2020 class out of St. Louis. He was the second-highest rated player in the Golden Gophers' class, but did not see any game action in the COVID-shortened season. He entered the transfer portal earlier this month. - Detroit News

Gophers redshirt freshman linebacker Itayvion Brown has entered the NCAA transfer portal, two sources confirmed to the Pioneer Press on Tuesday. Brown - a top 25-ranked outside linebacker, according to 247sports.com - was ineligible during the 2020 season and did not play in a game last season.   Ben VanSumeren is switching sides in the battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. The Michigan redshirt sophomore linebacker who entered the transfer portal on Feb. 12 announced his commitment to Michigan State on Saturday. That's a position of need for the Spartans, who are thin on linebacker depth. VanSumeren, an Essexville Garber High School graduate, has three seasons of eligibility remaining and won't officially become a Spartan until he enrolls. His younger brother, Alex VanSumeren, is a 2022 four-star defensive tackle at Essexville Garber who decommitted from Michigan on Feb. 11 and Michigan State is among the schools recruiting him. - Ann Arbor News

He entered the transfer portal in late December before Florida's appearance in the Cotton Bowl and will likely be immediately eligible and have three years remaining, thanks to the NCAA's proposal to not count the 2020 season toward eligibility.
