When Kenneth Walker III entered the transfer portal this spring and Michigan State coaches contacted him, they spoke about the future by also relating it to the past. Walker was at Wake Forest back then, fresh off two seasons in which he ran for 17 touchdowns. That's 17 more than any Michigan State running back managed in Mel Tucker's first season last fall. Tucker and the Spartans coaches wanted him to help fix it, to get the backfield back to the way it used to be. "They were telling me a lot about how we run the ball here, how things are here," Walker said. "Not even just on the field but the fans and everything and the culture here." On Thursday, Walker beamed as he spoke of the opportunity in front of him now. It was the first day of fall camp at Michigan State, the first of relative normalcy for Tucker after all the starts and stops of last year.

Last year's 2-5 season served as a feeling-out process for a new coach and an inherited roster. More than 20 players transferred out, and Tucker went to the recruiting trail and transfer portal to hand-select skill sets and personalities to build around. Walker was one of his top choices. "He was a great addition," Tucker said. "We saw him in the spring. He's a difference-maker. He's picked up where he left off." After rushing for exactly 579 yards each of the past two seasons on 5.3 yards per carry, Walker is the favorite to take a bulk of the carries in a backfield that features returning players Elijah Collins, Connor Heyward and Jordon Simmons as well as Auburn transfer Harold Joiner. - Lansing State Journal

  08/10/21 - Jarek BroussardSr/2023, Michigan State, 5-08, 192 (DS#67 RB) + More +

Averaging 26 rushing attempts per game is a heavy workload for any running back, let alone one with a 5-foot-9, 185-pound frame and a history of knee injuries. Yet, asked if he'd be OK with seeing that number reduced this year, Colorado's Jarek Broussard smiled, puts his arms out, shrugged his shoulders and said, "I ain't trippin' off getting the ball because, I mean, obviously I would want the ball. But, we have a good room and it would be very beneficial to see more guys contribute to the team success. "If I have to, I'll do what I gotta do to help the team win." Broussard battled back from two knee injuries in previous years to earn Pac-12 offensive player of the year honors in 2020 after leading the Buffs with 813 rushing yards during the five-game regular season. He added 82 more in the Alamo Bowl.

Nationally, Minnesota's Mohamed Ibrahim was the only player to average more attempts per game (28.7) than Broussard, in part because the Buffs didn't have great options around him. This year, Alex Fontenot, the Buffs' leading rusher in 2019, is back from injury, and Ashaad Clayton is a more mature second-year player. Deion Smith, who is also back from injury, Joe Davis and Jayle Stacks help to make the room even deeper. "We have a deep room and we all just feed off each other's success," Broussard said. "Despite me getting player of the year accolades, all that does is it motivates the other guys in the room. Fontenot was the leading rusher when I was here (in 2019), so that just gave me the confidence in myself to like, 'Okay, maybe I could do that, too." - Daily Camera

With all of the changes to Michigan State's roster during the offseason, the biggest question of the spring will still be unanswered when preseason camp begins: Who will be the Spartans' starting quarterback when they travel to Northwestern on Sept. 3 to open the season? "I feel good about the competition that we have," coach Mel Tucker said Friday during the Big Ten media days. "It's open, it's an open competition. We have capable quarterbacks that all have different skill sets. But it's going to be competitive." Tucker did not tip his hand as to whether sophomore Payton Thorne or Temple graduate transfer Anthony Russo might have the edge to replace 2020 starter Rocky Lombardi, who transferred to Northern Illinois. He likely won't know until MSU opens preseason camp Aug. 5.

"It's really close. Really close," junior wide receiver Jalen Nailor said. "Neck and neck." Thorne started in place of an injured Lombardi in MSU's last game of 2020, going 22-for-39 with three touchdowns and one interception in a 39-24 loss at Penn State. Overall, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Naperville, Illinois, native played in four games, completing 48 of 85 passes for 582 yards with three TDs and three interceptions. He also ran 25 times for 47 yards and a TD. Russo, who started 26 games over the past three seasons at Temple, played just three games in 2020 before a shoulder injury and COVID-19 halted his season. - Lansing State Journal

MSU added a new tight end in May, one that pleased Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren. It was his son, Powers Warren. The younger Warren, a redshirt junior at Mississippi State last fall, entered the NCAA transfer portal in November after not playing for first-year Bulldogs coach Mike Leach. Powers Warren, standing 6 feet 3, 245 pounds , played in one game in 2019 and five in 2018. Kevin Warren on Thursday said his son has two years of eligibility remaining at Michigan State, where he will be a graduate student. Powers Warren is a preferred walk-on. - Lansing State Journal

  07/23/21 - Jarek BroussardSr/2023, Michigan State, 5-08, 192 (DS#67 RB) + More +

Two Colorado Buffaloes are on the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the top running back in the country. Sophomore Jarek Broussard and junior Alex Fontenot are both among the 84 players on the preseason watch list. CU is one of only 12 schools with at least two players on the list. Broussard was named Pac-12 offensive player of the year in 2020 after leading the conference and finishing third nationally with 149.17 rushing yards per game. During CU's six-game season, shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic, he rushed for 895 yards and five touchdowns on 156 carries. He added nine catches for 65 yards. - Daily Camera

Anthony Russo is on the move. Not from Michigan State football, though. He just arrived in East Lansing in January and hopes to land the starting quarterback job when camp opens in a few weeks. Instead, the Spartans' graduate transfer quarterback signed a name, image and likeness deal Wednesday with College Hunks Hauling Junk, Russo told the Free Press. The Tampa, Florida-based moving firm signed Miami (Florida) QB D'Eriq King, another transfer, to a precedent-setting contract July 1 when new NCAA rules allowing college athletes to make money as company spokespeople and endorsers went into effect. While Russo said his deal falls nowhere near the $20,000 King received - "Oh God, I wish," Russo said while laughing, "I'd take half of that, but I'm not even getting half" - the sixth-year senior added he can make more with personal appearances and by hitting other bonus terms in his contract. - Lansing State Journal

Powers Warren, a tight end from Mississippi State who is the son of Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren, has transferred to Michigan State. Warren confirmed the move Sunday on Twitter. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Warren appeared in six games for the Bulldogs from 2018-19, after redshirting as a true freshman in 2017. Warren is from Minnetonka, Minnesota. Warren is the 17th player to sign or commit to Michigan State since the end of last season, following Ronald Williams, a cornerback from Alabama who announced his commitment last week. The Spartans have seen 25 players leave the program through the transfer portal. - Detroit News

Michigan State football isn't done adding to next season's roster yet. And Mel Tucker again went into the transfer portal, landing a player from his old boss, Nick Saban. Defensive back Ronald Williams announced via Twitter on Tuesday he committed to the Spartans. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Ferriday, Louisiana, is MSU's 15th scholarship addition from the portal in the offseason, along with one nonscholarship transfer.

Williams played last season for Saban at Alabama after spending two years at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where the former high school quarterback blossomed into a National Junior College Athletic Association All-American at cornerback as a sophomore and became a four-star prospect, according to 247Sports.com. An arm injury affected Williams early in the 2020 season, and he finished with just one tackle in three games. - Lansing State Journal

  05/06/21 - Jarek BroussardSr/2023, Michigan State, 5-08, 192 (DS#67 RB) + More +

At first glance, it would appear that sophomore Jarek Broussard would be the lead back. After all, he was named Pac-12 offensive player of the year last season after finishing third nationally in rushing yards per game (149.2). Broussard rushed for 895 yards during CU's six-game schedule. That averages to 1,790 for a regular 12-game season - a mark that only one player in CU history has topped: Rashaan Salaam with 2,055 during his Heisman Trophy-winning season of 1994.

Dorrell is a big believer, however, that what happened in 2020 has nothing to do with 2021. "It's gonna be a challenge for Broussard," Dorrell said. "He had a great year last year in stepping up and everybody has the expectations that it's going to be even better this next year. Well, he's got to fend off a lot of people for that to happen, and there's a really good stable that's competing for it. It's not going to be easy is my point, and it's a new year." Junior Alex Fontenot, the Buffs' leading rusher in 2019, had a strong spring after missing 2020 with a hip injury. - Daily Camera

  05/05/21 - *Shakur BrownrJr/2021, Michigan State, 5-11, 185 (DS#19 CB) + More +

The NFL Draft came to a close Saturday, and for the first time in 80 years, a Michigan State player was not selected. The Spartans had the third-longest streak in the nation of having at least one player taken in the draft behind Southern Cal and Michigan, but that came to an end in the 2021 edition of the draft. Junior cornerback Shakur Brown seemed the most likely to go, projected to be taken as early as the third round in at least one ranking. Senior defensive tackle Naquan Jones also seemed likely to go late in the draft, but neither heard their name called. Michigan State was one of four teams - Southern Cal, Michigan and Florida are the others - to have at least one player drafted every season since the modern draft began in 1967. Brown reportedly ran a 4.61 40-yard dash at Michigan State's pro day, not particularly fast, and it might have affected his stock. Brown did 17 bench press reps, had a 35.5-inch vertical jump and 9-foot, 8-inch broad jump, all good numbers. - Detroit News

A day after six players left Michigan State's football program, the portal produced for Mel Tucker in a big way. Linebacker Quavaris Crouch, who announced in January he planned to leave Tennessee after starting 10 games last season as a sophomore, posted a photoshopped image of himself in a Spartans uniform on Instagram with the caption, "Kickin it up north!! #gospartans #big10." He also changed his bio to read "Michigan State University" after Crouch was spotted at Spartan Stadium during MSU's spring game Saturday, and Tucker retweeted Crouch's Twitter post.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound product of Harding High in Charlotte, North Carolina, was a four-star prospect and the No. 1 player in his state in the 2019 recruiting class according to 247Sports.com's composite rankings. In two years with the Volunteers, Crouch played in 23 games with 11 starts, making 85 tackles. Last season, he had 57 stops but entered the portal days after Tennessee fired Jeremy Pruitt after going 3-7 against only Southeastern Conference opponents. - Lansing State Journal

  04/28/21 - DeAri ToddrSr/2022, Michigan State, 6-2, 265 (DS#999 DE) + More +

As Michigan State football nears the end of the semester, its roster continues to change like an Excel spreadsheet. The latest edits took place Monday when three members of the 2020 signing class, a walk-on and two other reserves entered the NCAA transfer portal. Included in the exodus were redshirt freshman tight end Tommy Guajardo, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Damon Kaylor, redshirt senior defensive end DeAri Todd, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Chris Mayfield, redshirt freshman defensive end Jasiyah Robinson and redshirt freshman long snapper Bryce Eimer. None of them played a snap during their careers in East Lansing. They are the latest Spartans players to begin the process of leaving the program since Saturday, when the team held its final practice of the spring in front of fans. - Lansing State Journal

You didn't have to watch Kenneth Walker III carry the ball more than a couple times Saturday to realize the Wake Forest transfer is a guy who can carry the rock at the Big Ten level. "I'll tell you what, he's a complete player. And I think you can see that today," Tucker said Saturday of Walker. Elijah Collins is a pretty good playmaker, too, if he returns to his 2019 form. He said this past week that a bout with COVID-19 set him back last season. Sophomore-to-be Jordon Simmons showed himself to be a capable prospect in the fall. Auburn transfer Harold Joiner III is set to join the team this summer. That's an intriguing backfield. One that ought to be formidable, even if crowded. It puts the onus on MSU's offensive line to finally be solid for the first time in six seasons. Because from a depth-of-talent standpoint, this should be the Spartans' best backfield since 2011. Walker, I think, gives this tantalizing group some certainty. - Lansing State Journal

  04/27/21 - Jalen SamirSr/2024, Michigan State, 6-4, 333 (DS#116 DT) + More +

On the Colorado football roster, Jalen Sami is listed as a sophomore, which suggests he's a young player. The 6-foot-6, 325-pound defensive lineman is actually a veteran, though, and he's looking to take his game to another level this year. "I feel like I'm a super senior here," Sami said Friday after the Buffaloes completed the 12th of their 15 spring practices. It's been quite a journey for Sami, but he's far from done. Sami graduated from Vista Ridge High School in Colorado Springs in 2017, and then grayshirted, which means he delayed his enrollment until January of 2018. Then, he redshirted in 2018. Although he has played two seasons with the Buffs, the NCAA did not count the 2020 season towards eligibility for any players because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That leaves Sami with potentially three more seasons to play. During the past two seasons, Sami has been a rock on the defensive line, starting 13 of the 16 games he's played and logging 577 snaps. This spring, the Buffs are short-handed on the defensive line, so Sami, in the mix for a starting role again, is receiving a lot of reps with the first and second-team units. - Daily Camera

  04/26/21 - Noah HarveyrSr/2022, Michigan State, 6-3, 230 (DS#44 ILB) + More +

Noah Harvey's thumping tackles are his trademark. Mel Tucker is pushing his senior linebacker to also bring more leadership to his developing defense. "He's making a conscious effort to do that within his personality," Tucker said recently. "He's not a rah-rah guy, but he's leading by example - knowing your personnel, knowing how to touch your teammates and how to connect with them is something that he's learning to do and he's getting better at that." Saturday's final spring practice and scrimmage, which starts at 2 p.m. at Spartan Stadium (BTN), will be the first test of that guidance. Harvey returns as the lone starting linebacker in a back seven that's short on numbers going into the summer. "I've been trying to get the guys in to watch extra film, just explaining them things that they can do differently on the field that can help them out (with) positive reinforcement, encouraging them," Harvey said Tuesday. "Just bringing them along, because this is hard. This has been an intense spring ball. I'm just trying to carry them along and let them know they're doing the right things." - Lansing State Journal
