  08/20/20 - Nick EubanksrSr/2021, Michigan, 6-5, 245 (DS#9 TE) + More +

They had started fall camp, preparing to kick off a just-announced 10-game season, when suddenly, the upperclassmen on the Michigan football team had to rethink their next steps. Less than a week after Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren released the schedule, the football season was canceled amid lingering concerns about the health and safety of the players because of COVID-19. "It was a real dark day in terms of everybody finding out that there wasn't going to be a season, because we had high hopes," Michigan tight end Nick Eubanks told reporters Wednesday during a video conference.

Now, players like Eubanks, defensive tackle Carlo Kemp, defensive end Kwity Paye and receiver Nico Collins, among others, must weigh their options. Should they hang on for a spring season that the Big Ten reportedly is planning? Should they leave now and begin training for the NFL Draft? They've already seen one teammate, right tackle Jalen Mayfield, declare this week for the draft. "I think about that a lot, especially now because of the season being postponed," Eubanks said. "But right now I'm just going to just stick around for a couple of months and then see where it goes from there in terms of me making the decision. Whether it is a spring season or not, I think I'll make my decision by then and see where I go from there." - Detroit News

Another Michigan football player is out the door. Cornerback Ambry Thomas announced Thursday night he will forego his remaining eligibility and declare for the 2021 NFL draft, just over a week after the Big Ten postponed all fall sports. "This was a very difficult decision as there is nothing I wanted to do more than to suit up in the maize and blue this fall," Thomas wrote in a statement posted on Twitter. "However, in light of the season being postponed, my family and I have decided that beginning to prepare for the draft is the right step to take." - The Detroit News

  08/19/20 - Ryan HayesrSr/2023, Michigan, 6-6, 305 (DS#11 OT) + More +

The Michigan football team's least-experienced position group on offense just got even younger following the planned departure of Jalen Mayfield. Mayfield, a junior with just 13 starts under his belt, made an announcement Tuesday night that he was going to forego his remaining college eligibility and declare for the NFL draft. His decision came just one week after the Big Ten said it was postponing all fall sports, including football, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league hopes to resume play in the spring, but it left high-upside players like Mayfield in a bind when it came to the 2021 NFL Draft, scheduled for April 29 to May 1 in Cleveland.

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Mayfield opted to take the plunge and bet on himself in uncertain times, leaving the Wolverines with a significant experience gap when they do resume. And assuming there is a spring season, Michigan will have to figure out who replaces Mayfield at right tackle. The obvious move is to slide Ryan Hayes over from left tackle to right. Back in February, Michigan offensive line coach Ed Warinner said Hayes, a 6-foot-7, 302-pound junior from Traverse City who started the first two games of the 2019 season at left tackle, spent most of his time in 2019 on the right side backing up Mayfield. He felt Hayes was better in a left-handed stance than Mayfield, which explained the plan for fall 2020. - Ann Arbor News

While Jalen Mayfield made the call Tuesday to jump into the NFL draft pool for 2021, some of his Michigan teammates are going to wait. Tight end Nick Eubanks and defensive lineman Carlo Kemp, both fifth-year seniors with one year of eligibility remaining and no fall season to prepare for, told reporters Wednesday that they are keeping their eye to the spring. Last week, the Big Ten Conference postponed all sports this fall, including football, citing health and safety concerns pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league hopes to resume play in the spring, but whether that happens and what it could look like remain unclear. "I think about that a lot, especially (now) with the season postponed," Eubanks said over video conference call. "Right now, I'm going to stick around and train for a couple of months and see where it goes from here." For now, Michigan's football team continues to operate under NCAA guidelines permitting 20 hours per week of strength training and conditioning, meetings and on-field walkthroughs. - Ann Arbor News

Jalen Mayfield is moving on from Michigan football. The redshirt sophomore offensive tackle announced Tuesday that he was declaring for the NFL draft and opting out of any potential spring season, marking an end to a career that was just in the process of blossoming. "These last few weeks have been filled with stress and have put me in a place where I have a difficult decision to make," Mayfield wrote in a statement on Twitter. "With that being said, I have decided to enter the 2021 NFL draft. Forever go blue!" - Detroit Free Press

  08/09/20 - Kwity PayeSr/2021, Michigan, 6-3, 261 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Michigan defensive end Kwity Paye has never wavered when it comes to his desire to play football this fall despite all the uncertainties. The Big Ten on Wednesday announced a 10-game composite schedule although there are no guarantees the season will be actually played because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Michigan opened preseason camp on Friday and the Wolverines' season begins Sept. 5 against Purdue at Michigan Stadium. Paye briefly considered leaving for the NFL after last season and most certainly will be a coveted prospect in next year's NFL Draft. He remained in Ann Arbor after all on-campus activities were suspended in mid-March and worked out on his own focused on the fall. "I'm playing. If we have a season, I'm playing," Paye told The Detroit News Thursday night. "I see a bunch of other guys opting out. I came back for a reason. I came back to play." - Detroit News

  07/25/20 - Myles HintonrSr/2025, Michigan, 6-7, 323 (DS#20 OT) + More +

There's a chance Stanford won't have the services of highly touted freshman offensive tackle Myles Hinton once the season begins. It all depends on how comfortable his parents are with the NCAA's protocols for battling the potential spread of COVID-19. Chris Hinton, a former NFL All-Pro offensive tackle, and his wife, Mya, a former college basketball player and ex-prosecutor, have been outspoken that the NCAA make make the safety of players a top priority. So far, they're not satisfied the NCAA has done enough to allow practices and games to be safely held in the middle of a pandemic. "Mya and I are huge football fans," Chris Hinton recently told the Chicago Tribune. "We want to see a season. But we want it done safely and only if it makes sense. "If guidelines that are going to be put in place, if we don't feel comfortable (with them), they will not play." - Oakland Tribune
