Indiana coach Tom Allen has been hosting players at his house by position group this summer and posting group photos on his Twitter account. On Thursday night, he hosted the wide receivers, which led to him formally confirming former Lawrence North star Donaven McCulley has joined that position group after starting four games at quarterback for IU last season. The move was initially reported in June when IU play-by-play man Don Fischer said McCulley would move during a radio interview.

Allen told IndyStar the decision to move was actually McCulley's idea. The 6-5, 210-pounder has had an interest in the position for years, Allen said, and believed it would be his quickest path to playing time this season with there being extensive competition at quarterback, with the addition of Missouri transfer Connor Bazelak and return of a healthy Jack Tuttle. Allen said he was thrilled with the move, as McCulley's length, athleticism and skill set gives him the opportunity to make an immediate impact. The Hoosiers lost their two starting outside wide receivers in Ty Fryfogle and Miles Marshall. McCulley is expected to compete for those spots along with North Carolina transfer Emery Simmons and junior college transfer Cam Camper among others. - Indianapolis Star/News

If you needed another reason to get excited about Michigan's offensive prospects this fall, look no further than Phil Steele. The long-time college football analyst and author of the annual namesake preview magazine, Steele ranks the Wolverines' offensive line No. 1 in the country heading into the 2022 season. In his magazine, on newsstands now (and available for purchase online), Steele says Michigan's front five could become the first-ever repeat winners of the Joe Moore Award.

The unit returns three full-time starters and its position coach and co-offensive coordinator, Sherrone Moore, who adds play-calling duties this season. "They lose two starters but add Virginia transfer Olusegun Oluwatimi at center, and he joins 14 (very highly touted recruits) on the unit, including second-team Big Ten left tackle Ryan Hayes," Steele writes. "They average 316 pounds and have 87 career starts." Steele is big on experience and returning production, and Michigan has that again this fall - returning starting left tackle Ryan Hayes, starting right guard Zak Zinter and starting left guard Trevor Keegan. NFL teams are beginning to gear up for training camp, and with that come assorted roster moves. The Atlanta Falcons made one on Wednesday that included former Michigan defensive back Brad Hawkins, who was cut by the franchise to make room for veteran defensive tackle Eddie Goldman, according to the team. Hawkins, a safety, went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft and later signed with the Falcons as a free agent. He appeared at Atlanta's rookie minicamp back in May, an introductory series of workouts for first-year players, and there was a belief he could stick until training camp. The 6-foot-1, 221-pound Hawkins played five seasons at Michigan, where he collected 178 total tackles (seven for a loss), eight passes defended, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He was a third-team all-Big Ten selection in 2021, and voted an alternate captain by his teammates. - Ann Arbor News

Even in one of the most productive running backs in the country, Donovan Edwards found a way to stand out last season. The former four-star recruit arrived in Ann Arbor to plenty of fanfare, a standout player at nearby West Bloomfield High School who said all the right things during his commitment. The 6-foot, 202-pound Edwards saw the field early on as a freshman, earning six carries in Michigan's season opener against Western Michigan and turning eight carries into 86 yards and two touchdowns two games later in a blowout win over Northern Illinois.

But as the season progressed, Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins became Michigan's bonafide 1a and 1b options. They earned most of the carries in key spots, combining to rush for more than 2,200 yards and 31 touchdowns - a real bright spot for an emerging offense. In some games, especially early on in the season, Michigan leaned on its rushing attack - led by a physical and experienced offensive line - to carry it to victory. Hassan Haskins, a second-team All-American pick by the American Football Coaches Association, accounted for more than 1,300 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. Later in the year, however, Edwards flashed his skillset in other, less expected, ways. He was a major fixture of the passing game in a 59-18 win at Maryland last November, catching 10 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown. The Michigan offensive line won the Joe Moore Award as the top line in the country last season, but they lost starting center Andrew Vastardis and right tackle Andrew Stueber. On paper, with the addition of grad transfer Olu Oluwatimi, one of three finalists last year for the Rimington Award, given to the nation's top center, and with Trente Jones and Karsen Barnhart competing at right tackle, this group has big plans. "I do believe this line could easily be better than last year," Zinter said. "Our goal in the room is we're gonna be the first O line to repeat as Joe Moore Award winners. We have potential and can be better than last year. Olu is a great addition. I love V (Vastardis). V was a dog, a warrior, super smart, (but) Olu is a little younger and has the athletic ability. He's a freak. Trente or Karsen are going to have big shoes to fill, and they'll both do really well."

To have candidates to fill those shoes in the future, Zinter said he jumped at the chance when DreamUp Sports approached him with an NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) deal to host a one-day camp for kids from kindergarten through ninth grades. "I love working with kids," Zinter said. "It's fun being around them and seeing the next generation have fun out there and make football fun for them. I wish I would have had it as a kid. True freshman quarterback Mikey Keene returns after stepping into the starting role following the injury to starter Dillon Gabriel, but he faces a challenge from Ole Miss transfer John Rhys Plumlee. Tailbacks Isaiah Bowser and Johnny Richardson are back, giving the Knights a nice one-two punch from the backfield. The defense lost its leading tackler in linebacker Tatum Bethune but transfers KD McDaniel (Kentucky) and Lee Hunter (Auburn) should give the group a boost. Another strong season is in the cards for UCF with its most significant challenge coming in Cincinnati, which the Knights host on Oct. 29. - Orlando Sentinel

UT values defensive backs with versatility, and Wesley Walker fits that mold. At Georgia Tech, he mostly played nickel back. Mazi Smith got his chance to settle in along Michigan's defensive line last year, blending in among a group of playmakers who helped take that side of the ball to new heights. Now, as the 2022 season nears, expectations are high for the senior defensive tackle from Grand Rapids. Smith, who was listed at 6-foot-3 and 326 pounds in the spring, will serve as the anchor up front this fall. Not just a guy who's called on to fill a role, but a leader tasked with helping bring the Wolverines through a transformation. "Every year the leadership changes hands," Smith said in the spring. "You've got to go out there and get it. Some people like to lead by example; some people like to talk. You've just got to go get it." Smith made sure to point out he "ain't the leader yet, but if I do everything right I will be." And with edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo, and starting defensive tackle Christopher Hinton, all gone, the door is now open to some new voices.

One of those expected to speak up is edge rusher Mike Morris, called on to help fill the void on the outside. And while Morris, friendly, animated and serious, may do most of the talking, Smith enters the new season with the most experience. Not only has he appeared in 21 games over the past three seasons, but Smith has 14 starts under his belt - the most, by far, among Michigan's returning defensive linemen. He was the Wolverines' primary nose-gap tackle last year, a big body who could clog up the middle and help defend the run game. - Ann Arbor News

After being forced by injuries into starting at quarterback as a true freshman, Indiana sophomore and former Lawrence North star Donaven McCulley may be making a position change. IU play-by-play announcer Don Fischer appeared on Indiana Sports Talk on 107.5 FM The Fan last week and was asked about the quarterback position. Fischer said the Hoosiers had decided to move McCulley to receiver. An IU spokesman said Friday the program would have no comment and would neither confirm nor deny that McCulley had been moved.

He is still listed as a quarterback on IU's roster. "They've taken Donaven McCulley out of the quarterback role and they moved him to wide receiver," Fischer said on the radio show. "I think you're going to see some spectacular things out of this kid before he's done at Indiana. He's a terrific athlete. He's 6-5. He can really, really run. That's one thing he did last year when he was called upon to play at quarterback." Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy said his right shoulder is not yet fully healthy, but he is throwing and is eager to compete for the starting job in preseason camp. McCarthy had a recent autograph signing at The M Den, and he was upbeat about where things stand with his shoulder, the process he has taken to rehab his injury and the prospects of competing with returning starter Cade McNamara, who helped lead Michigan to a Big Ten title last season. McNamara threw for 2,576 yards and had 15 touchdowns and six interceptions while leading Michigan to a 12-2 record.

McCarthy, who participated in spring practice but did not throw, played in 11 games as a freshman last season and threw for 516 yards and five touchdowns. He adds a different wrinkle because of his mobility, rushing for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. "Very hungry. Very hungry, I'll say that," McCarthy told The Detroit News about getting to fall camp and challenging for the starting job. "I'm not looking at it as competing; I'm just looking at it as tunnel vision. I'm gonna do whatever I can to be the best quarterback, best teammate, best player I can be, and whatever happens, happens." McCarthy, who started a foundation, J.J. For the Kids, earlier this year, and late last year donated $10,000 from his NIL earnings to various children's hospitals, including Mott Hospital in Ann Arbor, and to the Oxford School Fund, is seemingly always smiling and comes across as confident and upbeat. - Detroit News

Ryan Hayes, the well-liked kid from northern Michigan, has an opportunity of a lifetime this fall. A former tight end and defensive end in high school, Hayes was plucked from Traverse City West in 2018 by a Michigan coaching staff with a plan. Then-assistant Greg Frey, the team's tackles and tight ends coach, had envisioned turning the 6-foot-7, 252-pound athletic kid into a tackle. And when Ed Warinner took the job in 2018, he made sure to see it through.

Now, more than four years, Hayes returns as the anchor of the Wolverines' offensive line coming off an historic season. He's a shoe-in to start at left tackle, a position he settled into in 2020, and with that comes super-sized expectations. "I love Ryan, every way since he came in," Jim Harbaugh recently told reporters. "He was kind of a tween'er, under-sized offensive lineman/tight end. He was a tight end (in high school) and we saw a great vision for him to turn into an elite offensive tackle." - Ann Arbor News

Teammate and fellow receiver Ronnie Bell isn't surprised by Mike Sainristil's success. He says the Michigan coaching staff has tinkered with Sainristil on defense for years now, only to eventually send him back to the offensive side. "Once they kept him over there, I knew it would just take him a couple practices and he would get it down," Bell said. "And that's exactly what happened. "He stepped over and went from losing a couple reps to not losing no more reps." The result? Michigan plans to deploy Sainristil in many different ways this fall, with Harbaugh projecting him as a two or three-way player. "He's going to play special teams as well," Harbaugh. "Super excited. After taking it easy this spring. the final few months on his road to recovery, Michigan wide receiver Ronnie Bell says he's been cleared to play football again. Bell appeared Sunday afternoon at a youth football camp sponsored by The Uniform Funding Foundation at Father Gabriel Richard High School and said he's in the final stages of a nine-month healing and rehabilitation process following a torn ACL in his right knee. "I think I'm doing (well); I'm kind of wrapping up the process," Bell told a small group of reporters. "Just feeling real strong and just taking everyday step by step." These days, Bell can run, jump and cut again and is working toward reconditioning himself for the grind of football.

Michigan's football team began player-led workouts last week in Ann Arbor and will open camp in early-August, the ultimate test as to where the 6-foot, 192-pound wideout stands physically. "My eye looks like Ronnie Bell before he injured the ACL," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters last week. "Just the way he's moving; I see him jump, I see him run, I see him cut. Definitely on track and looks about the same as he did before - maybe even better." Harbaugh even pointed out that Bell has two more months to get stronger and faster, and the former all-Big Ten honoree says he plans to make the most of it. - Ann Arbor News
