  07/29/22 - Brett GabbertrSr/2025, Miami (OH), 6-0, 200 (DS#29 QB) + More +

The Miami RedHawks were picked to win the Mid-American Conference East Division in the preseason media poll. Miami received 20 of 24 first-place votes to finish with 139 voting points. Kent State (116) was second, followed by Buffalo (78), Ohio (72), Bowling Green (71) and Akron. Northern Illinois was picked to win the West Division and also win the MAC Championship. Miami was third in the voting to win the MAC Championship. The RedHawks return 16 starters from a team that went 7-6 and won the Frisco Football Classic. Miami is led by quarterback Brett Gabbert, who was named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award and Davey O'Brien Award. Gabbert, who passed for 2,648 yards and 26 touchdowns last season, is one of eight returning starters on offense. - Hamilton Journal News

  07/27/22 - Dequan FinnrSr/2026, Miami (OH), 6-1, 206 (DS#33 QB) + More +

Toledo's 2021 season stalled because of inconsistent quarterback play. Carter Bradley was ineffective as a starter and Dequan Finn, while productive when he was on the field, didn't get enough snaps to overcome the sluggish offense. Once Finn became the starter, however, the offense took a major step forward. Part of the boost came from running back Bryant Koback, who's now on the Minnesota Vikings. But Finn went a long way in proving himself.

He completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 2,067 yards and 18 touchdowns, rushing for an additional 501 yards and nine TDs. Most impressive was Finn's lack of interceptions, as he only threw two, the fewest of any quarterback who started at least seven games last season. Finn was at his best late in the year, with playing time becoming a comfort zone. He did lose a security blanket in wide receiver Matt Landers, who transferred to Arkansas. But the Rockets are happy with their group of pass-catchers, led by Devin Maddox and Jerjuan Newton. - Toledo Blade

  07/26/22 - Brett GabbertrSr/2025, Miami (OH), 6-0, 200 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Northern Illinois and Miami have been selected to win their respective divisions in the 2022 Mid-American Conference Football Preseason Media Poll. The poll was announced at the league's annual MAC Football Kickoff at House of Blues in Cleveland and was determined by a 24-member MAC media panel. NIU was also selected to win the 2022 MAC Football Championship Game. Miami garnered 20 of 24 first place votes in the East Division and finished with 139 points. Kent State was second (116 points), followed by Buffalo (78), Ohio (72), Bowling Green (71) and Akron (28). Northern Illinois was picked to win the West Division.

The Huskies finished with 122 points, followed by Toledo (120), Central Michigan (112), Western Michigan (56), Eastern Michigan (52) and Ball State (42). The Huskies clamed their sixth MAC Football Championship last season after turning in one of the best turnaround seasons in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). NIU posted a nine-win season after going 0-6 during the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign - becoming the first FBS program to win its league championship game one year after going winless. The Huskies return a total of 18 starters off that Championship team. - MAC Football

  07/08/22 - Dequan FinnrSr/2026, Miami (OH), 6-1, 206 (DS#33 QB) + More +

His jersey might say Toledo, but in the seven games Dequan Finn started in 2021, he proved that he belonged in Louisiana with the rest of college football's top quarterbacks. He completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 2,067 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just two interceptions, and rushed for 501 yards and nine touchdowns. In November, Finn was 74 of 109 for 1,138 yards with 11 touchdowns and a single interception. He was only sacked once in Toledo's final three regular-season games. "Going down there, I knew I could compete with those guys," Finn said. "Just because they're at a bigger school doesn't mean a MACtion quarterback can't compete. I was fully confident in myself. I know what I'm capable of doing and that I can compete with anybody." Last summer, Finn spent time in San Diego with QB guru Tom House, who's best known for his work with Tom Brady. While in California, Finn was able to talk up college and NFL quarterbacks, similar to his experience at the Manning Passing Academy. - Toledo Blade

Brett Gabbert completed 22 of 31 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns, Kenny Tracy scored on an 8-yard run and Graham Nicholson kicked two field goals as Miami (Ohio) beat North Texas 27-14 in the first - and possibly last - Frisco Football Classic on Thursday. Gabbert, the brother of former NFL quarterback Blaine Gabbert, threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Kenny Davis late in the second quarter and an 11-yarder to Nate Muersch early in the third quarter for Miami (7-6), which won a bowl game for the first time since the 2010 season. Tracy's touchdown run came late in the first quarter.

Nicholson made a 48-yard field goal on the RedHawks' opening drive, which was one yard shy of his season-high, and a 36-yarder in the second quarter. Austin Aune and Isaiah Johnson scored on runs of 2 yards and 1 yard for the Mean Green (6-7). Aune was 15-of-32 passing for 228 yards and two interceptions. North Texas played without two senior starters, running back DeAndre Torrey and safety Makyle Sanders, for unstated reasons. Torrey had averaged 101.3 rushing yards per game, 41% of the 245.5-yard team average that ranked fourth in the FBS. The Mean Green had 32 rushes for a season-low 89 yards, led by Aune's 28 yards. North Texas had averaged 50 rushes per game this season. - Miami (Ohio)/AP College Football
