  Dequan Finn threw for a touchdown and ran for another in the fourth quarter and Miami (Ohio) rallied for a 26-17 victory Saturday to take sole possession of first place in the Mid-American Conference. Trailing 17-9, Finn threw a 3-yard TD pass to Brian Shane early in the final quarter. Six minutes later he completed a 50-yard pass to Kam Perry down to the Western Michigan 18-yard line, setting up his own touchdown run on the next play for the lead.

Adam Trick's strip-sack ended the Broncos' ensuing possession and Dom Dzioban provided a cushion with a 51-yard field goal. Dzioban made all four of his attempts. Both the RedHawks (5-3, 4-0) and the Broncos (4-4, 3-1) came in on four-game win streaks. Miami has won 11 straight regular-season MAC games. Finn was 18-of-30 passing for 260 yards and ran for 52 more. Jordan Brunson rushed for 90 yards on 13 carries. Perry had 98 yards receiving and Weaver 96.   Dequan Finn threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, Jordan Brunson rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown, and Miami (Ohio) beat Eastern Michigan 44-30 on Saturday for its fourth straight victory. Miami took advantage of good field position in the second half with two touchdown drives to build a 35-14 lead. An Eli Blakey interception set up Miami at its own 38 and the RedHawks scored six plays later on Finn's keeper. Miami's next possession began at the 45-yard line after a 15-yard punt return. After Eastern cut it to 37-22 with 9:07 to play, the RedHawks used nine consecutive rushing plays to take a three-score lead.

Finn was 13 of 22 for 159 yards passing, and he carried it 10 times for 58 yards. D'Shawntae Jones added 66 yards rushing and a score as Miami (4-3, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) totaled 295 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Noah Kim threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns for Eastern Michigan (2-6, 1-3, but he was intercepted two times.   Dequan Finn threw for 203 yards and a touchdown and Miami of Ohio used the second half to pull away from Akron for a 20-7 win on Saturday. Dom Dzioban’s 41-yard field with 1:33 before halftime served as the game’s first points and Miami (3-3, 2-0 MAC) led 3-0 halftime. With 10:35 left in the third quarter, D’Shawntae Jones crashed in from the 1 to end a nine-play, 75-yard drive to make it 10-0. After the RedHawks’ defense held Akron to minus-6 yards on the next drive, Finn threw a 60-yard scoring pass to Kam Perry with 7:57 left in the third.

Akron (2-5, 1-2) dodged the shutout when Ben Finley completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Israel Polk to make it 20-7. Finley threw for 211 yards. Miami leads the all-time series 24-9-1 and has won eight-straight games in the series overall. The RedHawks are 11-6 against the Zips in Akron.   Jermaine Mia Agee returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and Kam Perry had two receiving touchdowns to lead Miami (Ohio) over FCS-member Lindenwood 38-0 on Saturday. Koy Beasley blocked A.J. Vinatieri's punt attempt in the first quarter, with Mia Agee's return marking the first points of the game. Perry had three receptions for 122 yards, with a 33-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 66-yard score in the third. Henry Hesson was 13 of 22 for 208 yards and the two touchdown connections to Perry. Kenny Tracy racked up 122 yards and a touchdown on the ground for Miami (1-3).   Dequan Finn threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a 39-yard score to lift Baylor to a season-opening 45-3 win over FCS Tarleton State on Saturday. Finn made his mark immediately with a 39-yard touchdown run on the Bears' first drive and added a 32-yard scoring pass to Ashtyn Hawkins later in the first quarter. Finn, a sixth-year senior transfer from Toledo who was named MAC Player of the Year last season, also found Michael Trigg for a 17-yard TD strike in the third quarter.

Finn finished 14-for-22 passing and was picked off twice. Keaton Thomas added to Baylor's fast start when he intercepted a Jaden Pete pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to make it a 21-0 lead with 4:12 left in the first quarter. Dawson Pendergrass ran for a 1-yard TD, and Sawyer Robertson fired a 30-yard touchdown to Ketron Jackson Jr. in the fourth quarter for the Bears, who outgained the Texans (1-1) 442-181. Daniel Greek was 7-for-13 passing for 80 yards for Tarleton State, a program in its final season of the four-year reclassification period before becoming a full NCAA Division I football program next season. - AP College Football

  2023 MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE VERN SMITH LEADERSHIP AWARD WINNER: Dequan Finn, QB, Toledo,...Toledo quarterback Dequan Finn was tabbed the winner of the 42nd Vern Smith Leadership Award as the top player in the MAC. Rockets' Head Coach Jason Candle was selected as the Head Coach of the Year, while UT's Peny Boone earned Offensive Player of the Year honors. Miami linebacker Matt Salopek was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Year, while RedHawk placekicker Graham Nicholson was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Year. Western Michigan running back Jalen Buckley earned Freshman of the Year honors, rounding out the specialty award selections.

Finn is Toledo's first Vern Smith Leadership Award winner, awarded annually to the league MVP, since Logan Woodside in 2017 and the fifth winner in school history. The junior quarterback, who is now a three-time All-MAC honoree, has had a remarkable season for the Rockets. Finn ranks first in the MAC in passing efficiency (155.36), completion percentage (65.1%), passing yards (2,384), touchdown passes (21) and total offense (242.8) en route to leading UT to its second straight MAC Championship Game. His 530 yards are the most among MAC quarterbacks, and he is one of just six FBS quarterbacks to have at least 2,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards. - MAC Football

  Highlighted by non-conference road action at Miami (Fla.) and Cincinnati as well as five home games, the Miami University football team announced its 2023 schedule on Wednesday morning. Miami opens the season in Coral Gables, Fla., under the lights versus the Miami Hurricanes on Friday, Sept. 1 and travels to face UMass on Saturday, Sept. 9. Rounding out non-conference action will be a trip to Nippert Stadium to face the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday, Sept. 16 before hosting Delaware State in the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 23. The matchup with the Hornets will be Miami's annual Football Alumni Day/Hall of Fame Weekend. The RedHawks are a Mid-American Conference best 34-16 in their last 50 MAC games and begin conference play on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Kent State.   Dequan Finn passed for 133 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another score to lead Toledo past Liberty 21-19 in the rainy Boca Raton Bowl Tuesday night. Toledo came from behind, then fended off Liberty, handing the Flames their first loss in a bowl game after three bowl victories. Liberty (8-5) was directed by interim coach Josh Aldridge, who stepped in for Hugh Freeze, who became the head coach at Auburn at the end of the regular season. Toledo (9-5) punctuated a successful season that included winning the Mid-Atlantic Conference title with its first bowl victory since 2015.

Liberty scored twice in a five-minute span of the fourth quarter, turning a 21-7 deficit into a two-point game. Kaidon Salter hit Treon Sibley with a 29-yard scoring pass at 7:24 of the period to make it 21-13 and CJ Daniels found Bentley Hanshaw with a 67-yard scoring strike to close the game to two points. But, Liberty's 2-point conversion try failed and Toledo held on for the final 3:40 Finn was just as dangerous offensively as he had been all season, when he led the Mid-American Conference with 30 total TDs. Finn guided Toledo's offense 75 yards on the opening drive of the second half to give the Rockets their first lead of the game, 10-7, and they led the rest of the way. Lenny Khule's 4-yard TD reception capped the drive and was his third TD of the season. Finn's 1-yard rushing score in the fourth gave Toledo a 21-7 lead. - Toledo/AP College Football
