Miami coach Manny Diaz says senior linebacker Zach McCloud has chosen to redshirt this season and preserve his final year of eligibility for 2020. McCloud was a three-year starter at Miami but appeared only sparingly in the Hurricanes' first four games this season, with the team primarily using two-linebacker sets instead of having three on the field as in years past. McCloud can still appear in one more game this season and be eligible for the redshirt, under a new NCAA rule that went into effect in 2018. Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinckney have gotten the overwhelming majority of the snaps at linebacker this year. - AP College Football

D'Eriq King says he is staying at the University of Houston. The quarterback is denying reports that he intends to transfer after redshirting the remainder of the 2019 season. "That was never a thought," King said Tuesday. "I never thought about leaving, never thought about transferring. To be honest with you, I didn't think about redshirting or doing any of this until everything was on the table. "I'm staying here, I'm here. If I wanted to leave Houston and go somewhere else I could've. I think just me being here is what I want to do and it's the best opportunity for me."

Houston lost 38-31 to Tulane on Thursday night, and King met with Cougars coach Dana Holgorsen on Friday morning. The first 30 minutes of the meeting were about the loss to the Green Wave. After that, Holgorsen said options were discussed. One of the options was King redshirting for the remainder of the 2019 season to save a year of eligibility. "I think it's pretty cool that these guys want to continue their college experience at the University of Houston," Holgorsen said, referring to King and wide receiver Keith Corbin. "They don't want it to be over in a couple of months. They have the right to get another year, so I respect that. Not only do I respect that decision, I support that decision." - AP College Football

Houston quarterback D'Eriq King says he won't play the rest of this season, instead taking a redshirt year, with the intention to return to the Cougars in 2020. Receiver Keith Corbin made a similar announcement Monday. The school released statements from both players. King and Corbin, both seniors, are taking advantage of an NCAA rule implemented last year that allows players to participate in four games and still redshirt, preserving a year of eligibility. Both could end up transferring, as other players have done after using the four-game redshirt. But for now they said they plan to play for Houston next season.

"I came here to play football for the University of Houston and that is not changing," King said. "After carefully thinking through this process with my family and Coach (Dana) Holgorsen, I have decided the opportunity to redshirt this season gives me the best chance to develop as a player, earn my degree and set me up for the best success in the future. I'm looking forward to being a part of the success of this program going forward." The new redshirt rule led several players to leave their teams during the season last year. Most notably, current Missouri quarterback Kelly Bryant left Clemson after losing the starting job to Trevor Lawrence after four games. Bryant made it clear from the start he planned to transfer as a graduate student, which meant he would be immediately eligible at his new school. - AP College Football

Jarren Williams passed for 250 yards and a touchdown, DeeJay Dallas ran for another score and Miami got past Central Michigan 17-12 on Saturday. Brevin Jordan caught three passes for 70 yards for the Hurricanes (2-2), who went 85 yards relatively easily for a touchdown on their first drive and then managed a total of only 117 yards and seven points on their next nine possessions. K.J. Osborn had a touchdown catch in the third quarter for Miami.

Ryan Tice kicked a career-long 55-yard field goal for Central Michigan (2-2), in former Florida coach Jim McElwain's return to the Sunshine State. His team was a 30-point underdog, and got within five on quarterback David Moore's 1-yard rush with 3:21 left. The Chippewas elected to kick the ball deep after that score and wound up getting the ball back - but on their own 5 with only 39 seconds left after a 59-yard punt by Louis Hedley. Al Blades Jr. sealed the win for Miami by intercepting a pass from Moore with six seconds left. Moore finished 23 of 50 for 217 yards. Williams completed 17 of 24 passes for Miami. It was a day filled with Miami mistakes, including allowing four sacks, committing 13 penalties, allowing a safety, dropping an interception and getting a punt blocked. - Miami/AP College Football

Oregon tight end Cam McCormick will miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury. McCormick dressed and participated in warmups before the Ducks' games against Nevada and last week against Montana but did not play. He was hampered by the injury throughout preseason camp. "We have tried. Cam's got a tremendous heart, he's a hard worker. I know he's been through a lot and he's been pushing trying to get there but due to the nature of the injury he's going to be fine.

But it is best - in his best interest, in the best interest of the team - that he have this year to heal up and then come back and join us next season and in spring ball with the offseason workouts," Ducks coach Mario Cristobal said at Monday's media availability. It is the second straight season McCormick has been sidelined by injury. He sat out last year after breaking his leg in the season opener against Bowling Green. D'Eriq King threw for a touchdown and ran for two more scores as Houston beat Prairie View 37-17 on Saturday night. King was 15-of-26 passing for 139 yards for the Cougars (1-1). Kyle Porter ran for 120 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Dalton Witherspoon kicked three field goals. The Cougars struck early, capping their first drive with Witherspoon's longest field goal of the night, a 46-yarder. They then scored on four-consecutive drives, starting with a 20-yard touchdown run by Porter, followed by a 1-yard keeper by King, a 21-yard pass from King to Keith Corbin to finish the first quarter, and finally, an 18-yard dash by King to make it 31-3 with 10:25 left in the half. Witherspoon booted a 22-yard field goal late in the quarter and the Cougars were up 34-10 at the break. Houston scored only once in the second half, on Witherspoon's 29-yard field goal midway through the third quarter, to push it to 37-10. Shaquille Quarterman took a long look at leaving Miami for the NFL after his junior season, and it would not have been a shocker to see the Hurricanes' best linebacker turn pro. He ultimately came back, seeking a picture-perfect ending. "I think there's definitely a higher place for me," Quarterman said. He means those words in a literal sense. At Miami, All-Americans get their picture on the high on the wall of the team's practice facility. Quarterman looks at that wall, sees the best players ever to take the field with the "U'' on the side of their helmet — and wonders what it'd be like to be part of that group.

So the NFL can wait one more year. There are team goals he will chase as well, of course, but Quarterman simply wasn't ready to leave the Hurricanes with just a good collegiate resume. He wants a great one, and his final season at Miami starts Saturday in Orlando when the unranked Hurricanes take on No. 8 Florida in the resumption of one of college football's best rivalries. "It's huge," Quarterman said. "The rivalry started way before I was born. You've got people — very, very, very committed fans saying like, 'Hey, man, this is it right here. This is everything.' So you know that it's important. You would have to be blind and deaf to not know it's important. To bring that win home for this place, for this city, it would mean a lot." - AP College Football

Jaelan Phillips, the nation's No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2017 and a former UCLA Bruins defensive end, was officially added to the University of Miami football roster on Thursday. Also added to the roster on Thursday: former Southern Cal safety Bubba Bolden, who watched practice in street clothes on Wednesday but had not been formally added to the roster. He was seen standing on the sidelines in workout clothes during practice Thursday. Phillips, listed as a 6-5, 245-pound redshirt sophomore, will sit out this season and be eligible to play in 2020 and 2021. He has been assigned jersey No. 95. Phillips was not seen on the practice field during Thursday's practice. He must go through the five-day acclimation period mandated by the NCAA.

Phillips announced in December he was withdrawing from UCLA because of "multiple injuries." He played in seven games as a freshman in 2017, but only four last season, which means, per recent NCAA rules, the 2018 season can be counted as a redshirt year. The five-star Phillips was ranked the No. 1 recruit in the 247Sports composite rankings his senior year at Redlands East Valley in California. He was also the No. 2 prospect in 247Sports' own rankings, the No. 6 overall prospect in the Rivals.com rankings, and the No. 3 overall prospect and top-ranked defensive player in ESPN's rankings. - Miami Herald
