Seth Henigan threw for three touchdowns and 360 yards and Memphis survived a wild fourth quarter to edge Arkansas State 44-32 on Saturday night. The teams combined for 38 points in the fourth quarter, with Memphis (2-1) retaking its final lead after Jevyon Ducker raced up the middle 39 yards for a 37-32 edge with just over two minutes left. The outcome was sealed after a snap got away from the Red Wolves for a 32-yard loss and a Memphis recovery at the Arkansas State 9 that led to a Brandon Thomas rushing TD. It was the Red Wolves' first turnover this season.

Chris Howard had extended a Memphis lead to 31-25 with a 47-yard field goal with nine minutes left. But Johnnie Lang found found himself wide open coming out of the backfield and James Blackman hit him for a 27-yard score and a 32-31 Red Wolves lead with 4:22 remaining. Joseph Scates completed a 51-yard pass play by spinning his way through several defenders inside the 10 and scoring to open the fourth quarter, building the Tigers' lead to 28-17. Brian Snead got the Red Wolves (1-2) within three less than two minutes later on a 7-yard run that he helped set up with a 29-yard rush. Memphis led 21-17 at halftime after Henigan's 8-yard run late in the quarter. - Memphis/AP College Football

Seth Henigan threw for 415 yards and two touchdowns and Memphis led all the way in a 37-13 win over Navy on Saturday in an American Athletic Conference opener. The Tigers (1-1, 1-0) entered not having won a conference opener since beating Navy 35-23 in 2019. Henigan completed passes to eight different receivers, and half his 24 completions went to Javon Ivory and Gabriel Rogers. Ivory had seven catches for 89 yards and Rogers caught five for 95.

The highlight play, however, occurred when Henigan threw a 79-yard touchdown to Joseph Scates who got behind the defense, caught it in stride and raced untouched into the end zone. It was Scates' only reception of the day. The play gave the Tigers a 20-7 lead with 11:56 left in the third quarter. Memphis built a 10-0 lead in the first before Navy quarterback Tai Lavatai threw a 62-yard scoring pass to Anton Hall Jr. Lavatai later ran it in from the 1 capping a 21-play, 74-yard drive that lasted 11:23 spanning the third and fourth quarters to reduce Navy's deficit to 23-13. - Memphis/AP College Football

Blake Watson scored on a 1-yard run with 33 seconds to play and Old Dominion beat Virginia Tech for the second time in as many tries on its home field, 20-17 on Friday night. The Monarchs made a big splash in their debut as a member of the Sun Belt Conference and spoiled the debut of Hokies coach Brent Pry. He was coaching against a longtime colleague at Vanderbilt and Penn State, Ricky Rahne. When it was over, as they had in 2018 when the Monarchs knocked off the then-No. 13 Hokies 49-35, fans streamed on to the field in celebration. ODU is 2-12 in its history against Power Five programs, but 2-2 against Tech.

Keshawn King ran for 111 yards and caught a touchdown pass from transfer quarterback Grant Wells for the Hokies. Wells also ran for a score, but threw two first-half interceptions, and then one to set up the decisive drive. The Hokies were driving and trying to put the game away when Wells' pass from ODU's 40 bounced off of Jalen Holston to the Monarchs' Ryan Henry. A 15-yard penalty against ODU moved the ball back to their 26 with 2:58 left, but a long completion by Hayden Wolff and then a defensive pass interference call near the goal line on Dorian Strong set the Monarchs up at the 1-yard line. Watson needed two tries to make it, but tumbled in with 33 seconds left. - Old Dominion/AP College Football

Four years ago, CorMontae Hamilton took a gamble with Ohio State football. The former Whitehaven High School standout took a 24-hour bus ride to a camp in Columbus hoping for a scholarship. Back then, he said, playing at Memphis wasn't an option. He got the scholarship and played three seasons with the Buckeyes. Now, Hamilton is taking another risk returning home for a fresh start and more playing time. "I just wanted to go somewhere else," Hamilton said of his college recruitment. "But being away and seeing the progress, being from Memphis, it makes you want to be on this team just so we can continue the uprise. Hometown kids come here to make it even better." Hamilton, who played 13 games at Ohio State, has turned heads since transferring after the spring.

Coach Ryan Silverfield singled him out as a standout from the team's first preseason scrimmage, and defensive line coach Kyle Pope raved about his work ethic from summer workouts. Of course, it helps he knew the defense a bit. Hamilton went to Ohio State as a tight end before switching to defense and playing his final season under defensive coordinator Matt Barnes, now with the Tigers Barnes knew Hamilton would be an asset after seeing his intensity in learning a new position at Ohio State. "He is a man on a mission. It was only a year or so that he got to spend on the defensive line, so it was a learning curve," Barnes said. "It was Mars for him, at first, but even when didn't know where to line up and what to do, his effort to the ball was unmatched." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

With Nik Bonitto, Isaiah Thomas and Perrion Winfrey having departed for the NFL after last season, the Sooners will have plenty of new faces along the defensive front this fall. Reggie Grimes will be a major piece in not only trying to replace the production OU lost there, but also in trying to make the Sooners a much better defense after last season's overall disappointment. "It starts up front," Grimes said. "The game's going to be won or lost up front. It's going to be on us, regardless. "I think we now have guys...they know, and they take pride in that." Grimes said getting the defense down was tricky during spring. "It was a lot, just because you were caught up in we're installing 10 plays today and then you get those down and it's 10 plays tomorrow," Grimes said.

Now, though, the system is making more sense to Grimes. "You don't know if we're coming off the edge, if we're dropping back in coverage or we're being put over a receiver," Grimes said of the defensive ends. "I think that's a really great thing. That's one of the little tricks … of Coach Venables' defense is that everyone can do everything. You don't know where the pressure's coming from, but you know the pressure's always gonna be coming." In 13 games last season, Grimes made five starts and finished with 18 tackles and a pair of sacks. - Daily Oklahoman

Quindell Johnson's goodbye to Memphis seemed well arranged in November. From walking out pregame for senior day festivities to saying "no comment" postgame about future plans. Against Tulane, his hometown team, Johnson had nine tackles and an interception in the Tigers' 33-28 win. But the "no comment" was less being coy and more unsure because Johnson started to waver about being selected in the NFL Draft. "I knew what I had done and what I was capable of doing," Johnson said. "But then, I had those doubts. If I come back, I knew I could get my draft grade up." The senior safety announced his return on Dec. 30 on Twitter.

The decision was partly aided by talking with the NFL Draft advisory board, who wanted to see a better 40-yard time and improvement in man-to-man coverage. But Johnson, a two-time All-AAC safety, also considered what his parents taught him in New Orleans. Finish what you start. Be loyal where you are. Trust things will always work out. "My Dad told me coming into Memphis that no matter the outcome, just stick it out. You just never know what happens," said Johnson, who had 104 tackles and 11 pass breakups last season. Loyalty was practiced early on in the Johnson household. Quindell and his twin brother Kendell played for the same AAU basketball program from 5 years old until high school. Their father Darell backed up his words by coaching his sons during their 10-plus years in the program. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Hand-in-hand with the offensive tempo is the desire for Venables' defense - and though Ted Roof is the defensive coordinator, there's no doubt the defense is Venables' - to be aggressive about bringing pressure. That not only is about how much pressure they bring but from where. Defensive end Reggie Grimes said earlier this week he's being asked to do much more in the new scheme compared to what he did under Alex Grinch's system the last two seasons. The Sooners will bring pressure from plenty of different spots and angles as they figure to be much less predictable in that area than they had been in recent years. The defensive ends and linebackers, in particular, are being tasked to do more than they had to do previously, which figures to give defensive ends like Grimes and Ethan Downs and linebackers like DaShaun White and David Ugwoegbu, among others, more of a chance to shine. - Daily Oklahoman

For the first time since 2014, Memphis is coming off a season in which it ranked outside the top 25 in toal offense. There are concerns about the run game and a receiving corps that must replace Calvin Austin III. Offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey expected Joseph Scates (6-3, 205-pound transfer from Iowa State) to bounce back from spring injuries and do the job. Said Cramsey: "He's fast and he's a long strider who gains ground. A tall, long guy who can pick them up, put them down and go get it. He can take the lid off the coverage. He can get himself downfield, he can stretch the field. He's going to force guys to play off a little bit and safeties to stay out of the box." At Iowa State, Scates appeared in 33 games over three seasons for the Cyclones. He totaled 16 receptions for 304 yards and four touchdowns. - Memphis Commercial Appeal
