Brady White threw for two touchdowns, Kenneth Gainwell scored three and Memphis' defense smothered Southern in the second half to pull away to a 55-24 victory on Saturday. The Tigers (2-0), leading 27-17 at halftime, scored 21 third-quarter points and held the Jaguars to only 15 yards total offense in the second half. The Jaguars (0-2) scored on the game's opening possession but White combined with Antonio Gibson on a 55-yard touchdown and Keith Brown returned a blocked punt 27 yards as Memphis took a 17-7 first-quarter lead. It was the first time Memphis returned a blocked punt for a TD since 2012. Another blocked punt led to White's 21-yard scoring throw to Gainwell and a 48-24 lead in the final minute of the third quarter. Gainwell also rushed for two scores, including a 46-yarder. White finished 17-of-21 passing for 337 yards. Damonte Coxie had six catches for 112 yards. Memphis outgained Southern 575-258. - AP College Football

Last season's Memphis defense seemed more about stopping opponents just enough so that an explosive Tiger offense could score more points. On Saturday, the roles were reversed with a much-improved Memphis defense stifling Mississippi, leading the Tigers to a 15-10 victory in the season opener for both teams. "Hats off to our defensive staff. Coach Fuller and the defensive staff was incredible, absolutely incredible," Memphis coach Mike Norvell said. "Kept them off-balance all game long." The Tigers held the Rebels to 173 yards of offense, including minus-1 yards rushing in the first half. But it was a fourth quarter safety by Memphis defensive end Bryce Huff that sealed it.

On first down after Tiger punter Adam Williams pinned the Rebels at their own 2, Huff busted through to tackle Corral as he dropped back to pass in the end zone. That gave Memphis its final 15-10 margin with 6:32 left. The Rebels would never get the ball back after the ensuing free kick and Memphis ran out the clock with a six-plus-minute drive. "That's something I'll remember for a long time," Norvell said of closing out the game. "This football team trains, prepares itself. This team plays a top-notch, physical football game here in Memphis." Patrick Taylor rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown to lead the Memphis offense. Kenneth Gainwell, who has taken over the Tigers all-purpose duties from Tony Pollard, now with the Dallas Cowboys, had 77 yards rushing for the Tigers and six catches for another 41 yards. - AP College Football

  08/28/19 - Brady WhiterSr/2021, Memphis, 6-1, 210 (DS#13 QB) + More +

Memphis quarterback Brady White has two seasons of eligibility remaining, yet he already has earned his master's degree. White dismisses the notion he could have lightened his class schedule now that he's already graduated. White instead is beginning work on a doctorate in liberal studies at the same time that he's directing Memphis' offense. "I always wanted to push myself academically," White said. "My whole plan was that as long as I was in college and playing ball, I was going to go as far as I can with my education. I'm very fortunate to be at this level."

White hasn't pinpointed exactly what he wants to do once he's done playing football, though he's considered getting involved in the business side of sports. For now, he's focusing on making sure Memphis delivers on considerable preseason expectations as the Tigers prepare to host Mississippi on Saturday in their season opener. Memphis' offense is working under new coordinator Kevin Johns and attempting to replace Los Angeles Rams third-round draft pick Darrell Henderson, whose 1,909 yards rushing last season ranked second among all Football Bowl Subdivision players. The Tigers need a big year from White as they attempt to maintain their status as one of the nation's highest-scoring offenses. - AP College Football
