2020 PRESEASON DAVEY O'BRIEN AWARD WATCH LIST: Brady White, Memphis,...White is one of 30 quarterbacks on the list and one of only three to represent the American Athletic Conference. SMU's Shane Buechele and UCF's Dillon Gabriel also made the list. In 2019, White threw for a career-high 4,014 yards and 33 touchdowns, becoming just the second quarterback in program history to eclipse 4,000 passing yards in a single season (Riley Ferguson - 4,257 in 2017). Against Penn State in the 84th Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, the all-conference quarterback threw for a career-high 454 yards.

White was twice named a member of the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 in 2019, recognizing individual performances during the season. His second nod came after throwing for 350 yards with three touchdowns in Memphis' 54-48 ranked victory over No. 15 SMU. The Santa Clarita, Calif. native returns in 2020 as the only FBS quarterback with over 4,000 passing yards last season. White has 7,310 passing yards and 59 touchdowns in his career, totals that both rank in the top four in program history. Danny Wimprine is the program's all-time leader in passing yards (10,215) and touchdowns (81). - Memphis Football

Shorter burst on to the scene last season and averaged a whopping 19.7 yards per catch. Only two players who qualified for the Conference USA leaders list averaged more yards per catch then Shorter, including UAB's Kendall Parham, who led the league at 21.0 yards per catch. Shorter is one of the fastest players on UNT's roster and has great size at 6-2 and 215 pounds. The big question for Shorter is if anyone can replace Mason Fine and get him the ball. - Denton Record

Memphis football coach Ryan Silverfield sent out a tweet earlier in June that appeared to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Now he's taking it a step further. Silverfield announced Tuesday on Twitter that every Memphis helmet will have a "BLM", short for Black Lives Matter, sticker for every game. The circle will be gray with BLM in blue lettering, with the M being the Tigers logo. It's the same logo Silverfield tweeted out two weeks ago. Silverfield added a hashtag of #ALLINagainstRACIALINJUSTICE in Tuesday's tweet. The news was retweeted by several players, including senior defensive back TJ Carter, defensive tackle O'Bryan Goodson and wide receiver Calvin Austin III.

The Tigers football team, currently in the middle of voluntary workouts, helped lead a Unity Walk earlier this month from their practice field at University of Memphis' south campus to main campus to protest against racial injustice. At one point, Silverfield chanted "Black Lives Matter" along with his players. The announcement is the latest sign of the football team sending messages against injustice. It also shared a video on the football team account earlier this year where Silverfield, running backs coach Anthony Jones Jr. and players vowed to take a stand together against systemic racism. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

The Memphis football program had no positive tests upon returning to campus last weekend, athletic director Laird Veatch announced Thursday. Veatch said that every player and staff member had been tested. "It really went exceptionally well. The players handled it really well, and it was a really smooth process. In fact, we were very fortunate that we had no positive tests and that's pretty remarkable," Veatch said in a video released by the University of Memphis. As a result, Veatch said that phase zero of the athletic department's return-to-campus plan was a success and that phase one will begin early next week. In phase one, the football team will be allowed to hold voluntary workouts with 10 people or less.

When the athletic department initially announced its phased return plan last month, the school stated that the men's and women's basketball programs would begin their phase zero once the football team progresses to phase one. There will be a daily screening process for the football program moving forward and players and staff will be required to masks while at athletic department facilities. Veatch said that if a player or staff member were to test positive for COVID-19, they would immediately be placed into quarantine and a contact tracing process would be enacted. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Memphis athletic director Laird Veatch announced Wednesday that football players can return to campus June 6 as part of the first phase of all athletes, coaches and staff eventually coming back. The first phase - which Veatch called Phase Zero - involves football players, staff and limited athletic department staff. The phased approach is to "permit adoption of best practices and keep the safety of the student-athletes at the forefront." It includes "strict protocols for a limited number of staff and student-athletes, while each subsequent stage will only be enacted upon the success of the previous stage."

Football players will be the first students allowed on Memphis' campus since the university announced on March 12 that it switched to remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. U of M president David Rudd said earlier this month that plans are under way for all students to return to campus this fall. Summer classes will be held online. Veatch added that the first phase will consist of no workouts but a screening process that involves testing, physicals and questionnaires. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Some Memphis sports programs will be allowed to convene beginning June 1. The NCAA Division I council voted Wednesday to approve voluntary athletic activities for football, men's basketball and women's basketball, beginning next month, the NCAA confirmed. A moratorium on such activities is due to expire May 31 after being stopped in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. "We are pleased that the NCAA has approved voluntary activities in football, men's and women's basketball starting in June and we have been preparing for that possibility for some time now.," Memphis athletics director Laird Veatch said. "We look forward to sharing more in the near future once our plan is complete." The move represents a step toward college football taking place in the fall. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

If it was up to Memphis football coach Ryan Silverfield, he'd prefer not to play games this season at an empty Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. "Would I be in favor it? No way," Silverfield said during a virtual meeting with the Rotary Club of Memphis. "It's the fans that make the game. We're so lucky we have such an amazing fanbase here and many of you attend our games at the Liberty Bowl. I want that Liberty Bowl packed, let's fill it with 60,000 every game." However, he acknowledged that it's also out of his control. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the NCAA and government officials are weighing all possible options to determine what's safe for all parties.

Silverfield said that as he meets often with athletic director Laird Veatch and university president M. David Rudd, they too are considering the scenarios not just for their football team but what's best to keep fans safe. "Whether it's limited seating, social distancing or no fans at all, the safety of you guys is obviously a major factor as well," Silverfield said. "So whatever they decide to be, so be it. I just know that regardless we got Tiger fans all over the country, especially here in the city of Memphis, that are anxious to watch us get back to work." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Former Memphis football standout Antonio Gibson has a new home. Gibson was drafted in the third round Friday by the Washington Redskins with the 66th overall pick in the NFL Draft. It comes after a senior season when he was named AAC co-Special Teams Player of the Year. "I feel good, man. I've been waiting on this all my life," Gibson said in an interview posted on the Redskins' official Twitter account. "That's where my mom and sister were born and raised so, you know, going back home. I feel like I can play running back and receiver. Wherever they decide to put me, I'm going to dominate."

Even though Gibson started at wide receiver, NFL scouts looked at him as a running back after he contributed more from the backfield to end the season. At the Senior Bowl, he lined up at running back and led the South team in rushing yards. He showed his versatility in the Tigers' 54-48 win against SMU when he caught a touchdown pass, rushed for a touchdown and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. All three plays were over 50 yards and Gibson finished with a school-record 386 all-purpose yards. Gibson finished last season with 735 receiving yards, 376 rushing yards and 645 kickoff return yards with 13 total touchdowns. He was tied for second in the nation with seven plays from scrimmage of 50 yards or more. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

In the week leading up to the Cotton Bowl, Brady White was focused on Memphis beating Penn State but also pondered if that would be his last game. When White announced on Jan. 8 that he was returning for his senior year, it became the first win of coach Ryan Silverfield's tenure. After a strong second season as the Tigers' quarterback, he wanted one more year to build on what he accomplished. Now that has changed with how the coronavirus pandemic has affected the world. Instead of preparing for the Tigers' spring game on Friday, White has stayed indoors in Memphis as he works out and studies his playbook. For now, that senior season is still in play. Until a decision comes on when the team will practice again, White is staying optimistic while also keeping aware of what's happening around him.

"I just knew I had an awesome opportunity to come back to. I was just excited about what we could possibly do, what I could do for myself and for this team coming back for my last year," White said. "I wanted us to maximize the opportunity and also building on what I've done here going into my next step." White, along with running back Kenneth Gainwell and wide receiver Damonte Coxie, were expected to keep the Tigers' offense running in high gear for Silverfield's first full season. Yet now, that remains an unknown with the college football season in limbo. For now, White is remaining positive and finding ways to occupy his time beside football. That includes cooking more than he usually does without sticking too tightly to his usual meal plan. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

He appeared suddenly on the computer screen, wearing a black T-shirt with pink lettering for the Warehouse Performance Institute. A brick wall served as the backdrop. "Austin Hall. University of Memphis. No. 25. Linebacker. DB. Special teams," he said for an introduction. And so began Hall's virtual pro day, where he did all the drills and measurements he was supposed to do on campus with the rest of Memphis football's NFL Draft hopefuls at the Tigers' official pro day. This, though, was filmed last weekend at a converted warehouse and a high school practice field in Bessemer, Alabama. It was the latest concession to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which turned the NFL Draft process, and the Collierville native's upcoming wedding, into more nerve-wracking endeavors than they already were.

"All these years you could have had a chance to go to the NFL, and you pick the time it's most hectic," Hall said this week, "It's definitely challenging to even get seen by scouts or even talk to any of them. It's definitely hard." The NFL's decision to push forward with its annual draft despite the global health crisis further stacked the odds for Hall, and the other fringe prospects like him from Memphis this year. As usual, there will be 255 college football players selected over seven rounds and three days when the 2020 NFL draft begins on April 23. And following the conclusion of that, more will be signed as undrafted free agents. But the selections will be made virtually, via computers and conference calls, with NFL executives scattered across the country in accordance with social distancing regulations. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

As gyms close around Memphis to limit the spread of the coronavirus, Antonio Gibson is on a daily mission: Find a place to work out for the NFL Draft. Some days, it's the Memphis practice field at the Billy J. Murphy Complex. This week, it was Tom Lee Park where the former Tigers wide receiver found a sand pit and worked out with teammates. "When I was younger, we always played in the backyard or the streets," Gibson said. "It was easier than this because it's more complicated. You just have to adapt." This is life now for Gibson and his former Memphis teammate Patrick Taylor Jr. How do you continue getting ready for April's draft when you can't use a facility or travel to meet with teams?

Taylor's path became trickier after undergoing foot surgery on March 10 for an injury that caused him to miss eight games last season. He said he'll be out 4-6 months as he continues to rehab back home in Houston. However, he wasn't worried about the surgery affecting his draft stock. "I feel like I did all that I can do at the combine and I was able to show that I was capable of catching the ball out of the backfield and showing my speed while being hurt," said Taylor, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.57 seconds. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

LSU backup quarterback Peter Parrish has been indefinitely suspended from the team for a violation of team rules, Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said Tuesday evening. Parrish hasn't been with the team "for a while," Orgeron said, and was not with the team during offseason workouts following the program's national championship win in mid-January. Orgeron said he doesn't know when Parrish will return to the team. Ed Orgeron hires former LSU players Bennie Logan, Eddie 'Boo' Kennison to support staff Although the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Parrish did not play as a true freshman in 2019, he was the most experienced option behind starter Myles Brennan. LSU's quarterback depth is now left to TJ Finley and Max Johnson, true freshmen who enrolled early and are practicing with the team this spring. LSU still has three scholarship spots available in its 2020 recruiting class, and Orgeron's coaching staff was already exploring adding transfers to fill out the 25 scholarships the NCAA allots each collegiate program annually. - Baton Rouge Advocate

2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: Patrick Taylor Jr., RB, Memphis,...Taylor opted to forego the draft in 2018 and returned for a senior campaign with intentions of serving as the Tigers' primary back. In a season-opening win over Ole Miss, Taylor had 27 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown before suffering a fourth quarter injury that would cost him the next eight games. Taylor returned to the lineup on Nov. 16 in a 45-27 road win at Houston and scored his final career Tiger touchdown in the Cotton Bowl against No. 10 Penn State. He capped his four-year Memphis career with 45 games played and 536 carries for 2,884 yards and 36 touchdowns. His 2,884 career rushing yards are third in program history behind DeAngelo Williams and former teammate Darrell Henderson. His 36 career rushing touchdowns rank second in Memphis history with Henderson and M Club Hall of Fame honoree Dave Casinelli.
