White completed 34 of 50 passes for a career-high and school-record 486 yards and six touchdowns, while he also had 30 rushing yards with another score, tying The American's single-game record with seven total touchdowns. Memphis played without two key starters against UCF Saturday in leading receiver Damonte Coxie and top cornerback TJ Carter. Following the Tigers' 50-49 win, coach Ryan Silverfield said that Coxie "is not a part of our program right now" and did not elaborate further. He added that Carter was on the sidelines during the game but did not dress. Javon Ivory started in Coxie's place and had four catches for 88 yards and a touchdown. Brady White tied for a career-high six touchdowns, including the go-ahead pass to Calvin Austin III. Coxie, who led the team with 16 receptions entering Saturday, spoke with reporters on Tuesday to discuss the challenges facing the Knights' secondary.

He gave no indication that his playing status was in jeopardy for Saturday's game. But with his departure, the Tigers have now seen six players either opt out or leave the program since preseason camp. Kenneth Gainwell, Coye Fairman and Tim Hart announced they opted out while Silverfield said that La'Andre Thomas and John "Pop" Williams have taken leaves of absence for undisclosed reasons. Coxie, who started every game since his sophomore year, had consecutive 1,000 yard seasons in 2018-19. Brady White's sixth touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining completed a school-record 21-point comeback and the Tigers beat UCF 50-49 on Saturday to snap a 13-game losing streak to the Knights. After White found Calvin Austin for a 4-yard score and a two-point try failed, the Knights (2-2, 1-2 American Athletic) drove to the Memphis 22 before Daniel Obarski pulled a 40-yard field-goal attempt left with 19 seconds remaining. On the Tigers' winning drive, a shovel pass to Tahj Washington on fourth down went for 52 yards to the UCF 5. Three plays later White tossed the game-winner to a diving Austin on the left side of the end zone.

UCF led 27-14 at halftime, had a 21-point lead early in the third quarter and led 35-29 entering the final quarter during which the teams combined for five touchdowns. The Tigers' comeback surpassed the school record of 17 points against Houston in 2017. White finished 34-of-50 passing for a school-record 486 yards in a duel with UCF's Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel became the first UCF quarterback to throw for over 500 yards and blew past that mark with 601 yards on 35-of-49 passing with five scores. There were no interceptions. UCF outgained Memphis 798-703 for 1,501 yards offense combined, eclipsing the conference record of 1,479 set by the same teams in a 2017 game. Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said Tuesday that sophomore running back Cameron Fleming will miss the rest of the season with an injury suffered in the season opener against Arkansas State. Silverfield said on Sept. 22 that Fleming would be out "for the foreseeable future" but didn't provide a timeline. Fleming, who played defensive back last season, was hurt after his first carry against Arkansas State and was seen on the sidelines wearing an air cast during the second half. Junior running back Marquavius Weaver had the third-most carries at against SMU and looked effective behind Rodrigues Clark and Kylan Watkins. He and sophomore Asa Martin will share backup duties as both are listed on the Tigers' depth chart behind Clark and Watkins against UCF on Saturday (2:30 p.m., ABC). - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Brady White was blunt in giving SMU credit for winning 30-27 Saturday. The Memphis quarterback was equally blunt describing his three turnovers, including a fumble that set up SMU's game-winning drive in the final minutes. "They obviously did enough to win but we should've definitely won that game," White said. "I've got to do a better job at capitalizing to help this offense take advantage of those changes (the defense) gives us and obviously finishing the game off there at the end." Memphis shouldn't have been in position to win in Dallas after trailing 24-3 in the second quarter. The Tigers looked slow and rusty after 28 days off due to a COVD-19 outbreak, and White's two first-half interceptions didn't help.

Yet there the Tigers (1-1, 0-1 AAC) were with 3:14 left. White led a drive into SMU territory thanks to a 32-yard pass to Calvin Austin III. There was hope Riley Patterson, who equaled a school and AAC record with a 56-yard field goal, would deliver once again. White's fumble, courtesy of a strip sack by SMU's Junior Aho, sealed the Tigers' fate. "At the end, you got to hold the ball no matter what," White said. "I had two hands on it but can't cough it up." After 11 days of not practicing and two weeks of transitioning back, it was easy to explain the Tigers' poor performance. Linebacker Tyler Murray, a transfer from Troy, had 14 tackles (one for a loss), an interception, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. SEPT 14 CONFERENCE USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Charlotte junior LB Tyler Murray posted double-digit tackles and played a role in three key turnovers as Charlotte battled Appalachian State. The Jacksonville, Florida, native recovered a fumble to thwart an App State scoring drive at the Charlotte one-yard line on their first possession of the game. His third-quarter interception stopped another drive into the red zone and his forced fumble at the Mountaineers 20-yard line gave Charlotte a chance to tie midway through the fourth quarter. The transfer from Troy finished the game with 14 tackles, 1.0 TFL, a FR, a FF and an INT in his 49ers debut. - Conference USA Football

Sean Dykes got a text from former teammate Joey Magnifico before Memphis began its season Saturday. It was two words. Let's go. After missing most of last season with a knee injury, Dykes badly wanted to be the player he was in 2018. He got his chance in the Tigers' 37-24 victory against Arkansas State at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The senior tight end had two touchdowns, a career-high 10 catches and his first 100-yard receiving game since 2017. Dykes also had the Tigers' longest play from scrimmage, a 38-yard catch that set up a field goal It sure seemed Dykes was back.

"It felt good to be back out there for the first time, it felt like, in two years. It felt like a big relief off my shoulders because I've been being patient," said Dykes, who finished with 137 receiving yards. Dykes' second touchdown gave the Tigers a 34-17 lead in third quarter. He was targeted 10 times and did not record a drop. It was what he hoped to do last season alongside Magnifico and prove that his 161 receiving yards in the 2017 AAC Championship game wasn't a fluke. But after he played in the first four games of the 2019 season, the Tigers decided to shut him down to heal. Memphis senior defensive back John Broussard Jr. was shot in the leg Sunday night near the university's main campus, according to a report from Local24. The Memphis Police Department confirmed to the Commercial Appeal that a shooting occurred on Spottswood Avenue near Memphis' main campus on Aug. 30, but did not named Broussard or any others involved. The shooting happened while Broussard and two others were standing outside by a vehicle. A witness heard gunshots after observing "about 10 people fighting in the street." MPD confirmed a 22-year-old man was shot in the leg and transported to a local hospital in non-critical condition and that a 20-year-old man was shot in the lower back. Broussard played in eight games last season and is listed on Memphis' depth chart behind Jacobi Francis. Brady White threw four touchdown passes, coach Ryan Silverfield collected his first regular season win at Memphis, and the Tigers beat Arkansas State 37-24 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. White, who is the Football Bowl Subdivision's only 4,000-yard passer from last season, was 26-of-36 passing for 275 yards. He had two touchdown passes in the first half and added a pair of scoring throws from inside the 10-yard line in the third quarter that stretched the Tigers' lead to 34-17.

Sean Dykes had 10 catches for 137 yards receiving and two touchdowns for Memphis. Calvin Austin III and Damonte Coxie also caught TD passes. Rodrigues Clark had 105 yards rushing on 20 carries that included a 14-yard touchdown run. Logan Bonner was 14-of-23 passing for 133 yards with a touchdown pass and two interceptions for Arkansas State. Isaiah Azubuike and Ryan Graham each ran for a score. The attendance was 4,537 for 58,325-seat Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The stadium was divided into four quadrants and fans were not allowed to move between quadrants. Despite entering the season as defending AAC champions, Memphis was ranked third in the AAC football preseason media poll. The Tigers received two first place votes and were behind UCF and Cincinnati. UCF received 10 first place votes and 204 points overall and Cincinnati received seven first place votes and 201 total points. Memphis earned 192 points, 46 more than SMU. Navy, which was fifth, was the only other team to receive a first place vote. The preseason media poll usually gets released in July around AAC Media Day and its annual summer kickoff but it was delayed when both events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. University of Arkansas freshman receiver Shamar Nash has elected to opt out on the 2020 football season, sources have told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Nash, a 6-3, 215-pounder from Memphis, would be missing a second consecutive season of competition by opting out, as he redshirted last season. Nash, who finished his prep career at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., was a four-star prospect and part of the Razorbacks' big crop of wide receiver signees in 2019 along with Treylon Burks, Trey Knox and TQ Jackson.
