  12/23/20 - Brady WhiterSr/2021, Memphis, 6-1, 210 (DS#13 QB) + More +

Brady White passed for 284 yards and three touchdowns to lead Memphis to a 25-10 victory over Florida Atlantic on Wednesday night in the Montgomery Bowl. The Tigers (8-3) built a big halftime lead, withstood a third-quarter rally and ended coach Ryan Silverfield's first season with a second straight win. They also snapped a five-game bowl losing streak. Meanwhile, Willie Taggart's debut season with Florida Atlantic ended at 5-4 after the offense sputtered much of the way. The game was created to replace the canceled Fenway Bowl. Cramton Bowl will also host the Camellia Bowl on Christmas Day. This one ended in a driving rain. White, who was named game MVP, completed 22 of34 passes with three short touchdowns while also throwing an interception, having a big game even with a quiet night from star receiver Calvin Austin III.   Memphis football is getting two additions from Michigan via the transfer portal. Michigan State offensive lineman Devontae Dobbs and cornerback Julian Barnett both announced Monday via Twitter they're transferring to the Tigers. Both were four-star recruits who signed with the Spartans in 2019 out of Belleville High School. Dobbs, who is 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds, played four games in 2019, including one start at left tackle. He didn't play this season as Spartans offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic told reporters that Dobbs was hurt but also needed to improve in some areas. Barnett played wide receiver in 2019 and appeared in every game with 13 catches for 182 yards. He returned to defensive back this season but while he appeared in six games, he was used on defense in just two games and mostly played on special teams. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  12/21/20 - Devontae DobbsrJr/2024, Memphis, 6-4, 295 (DS#999 OG) + More +

The top-rated recruit in Michigan State football's 2019 signing class is planning a move to another program. Offensive lineman Devontae Dobbs, a former four-star prospect from Belleville, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, the Free Press has learned. The 6-foot-5, 305-pounder played in four games as a true freshman in 2019, allowing him to take a redshirt, but he also started at left tackle against Rutgers. He was not in uniform for a game at all this season. Offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic on Dec. 1 said Dobbs, along with senior offensive lineman Luke Campbell, were hurt but alluded to performance issues.

"Those guys are trying to work through some injuries and work through just getting improvement," Kapilovic said. "I don't know if we'll see them this year. But hopefully, if we don't see them this year, that we'll definitely see some improvements and see them next year." Dobbs' high school teammate and classmate, Julian Barnett, preceded Dobbs out of MSU and into the portal on Dec. 10. And with linebacker Luke Fulton also opting to leave, the Spartans' top three recruits from Mark Dantonio's 2019 class all have entered the portal during Tucker's first year. Dobbs is the sixth MSU player to enter the transfer portal since Nov. 16. Entering the portal does not necessarily mean a player is leaving, however. - Lansing State Journal

Riley Patterson kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired to give Memphis a 30-27 win over Houston following the Cougars' improbable comeback on Saturday. Trailing 27-6 at the end of third, Houston's Clayton Tune threw a pair of touchdown passes around his 19-yard scoring run in the final quarter to tie it at 27 with less than a half-minute left to play. Tune threw a 13-yard score to Marquez Stevenson early in the fourth after a 10-play, 75-yard drive. His touchdown on the ground came five minutes later with 8:01 remaining. The game-tying drive ended when Tune threw an 18-yard scoring pass to Bryson Smith with 28 seconds to go. On the 15-play, 70-yard march, the Cougars had two conversions on fourth down to keep the drive going.

Brady White responded to lead Memphis (7-3, 5-3 American Athletic Conference) on a 5-play, 46-yard drive to set up Patterson. The Tigers were aided by a 15-yard pass interference play on Thabo Mwaniki as he defended Calvin Austin III. White found Austin two plays later on a 22-yard reception in which the receiver bent backwards across his body and appeared to injure his leg. With the win, Memphis finished a second consecutive season undefeated at home for the first time in program history. - Memphis/AP College Football
