  09/21 WEEK 3 MAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: William DePaepe, UMass, DL, Junior, Bettendorf, Iowa (Moline),...DePaepe led a UMass defense that shutdown Stonehill all day en route to a 36-14 win as the Minutemen improved to 3-0 on the season. DePaepe tied for the team lead with four solo tackles, while notching two sacks for 27 yards lost and he added a forced fumble. DePaepe and the UMass defense held Stonehill to a just 27 yards rushing on 28 attempts and a 3-for-16 mark on third down. - MAC Football

Harding led Massachusetts to a 37-10 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday as the Minutemen started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2011. Harding had a 48-yard touchdown grab on the game's second play to give UMass an early 7-0 lead. He then posted an 82-yard punt return touchdown to put the Minutemen up 14-0. It marked his second career punt return touchdown. For the day, Harding finished with 141 yards on two punt returns to go along with 49-yards receiving for 190 all-purpose yards on the day. - MAC Football

  09/07 WEEK 1 MAC FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: William "Pop" Watson III, Massachusetts, QB, Senior, Springfield, Massachusetts (Springfield Central),...Leading UMass to a 37-21 win at Big Ten foe Rutgers on September 3, Watson totaled 197 passing yards on an efficient 19-for-22 night (86.36%) while throwing for three touchdowns, including a 31-yard strike to Joseph Griffin Jr. Watson III also rushed six times for 40 yards (6.7 yards per rush) and did not take a sack as the Minutemen snapped a 16-game losing streak and beat a current P4 opponent for the first time since joining FBS. Watson III became the first UMass quarterback with three passing touchdowns and an 80% completion rate in a game in the FBS era, and the first since current Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen in 2008. The win was the first for UMass since beating Wagner on October 26, 2024, and marked the program's first FBS win since winning at Army on Oct. 28, 2023. - MAC Football

  Pop Watson III passed for 197 yards and three touchdowns as UMass ended a 16-game losing streak with a 37-21 win over Rutgers in the season-opener for both teams on Thursday night. It ended the longest current losing streak in the FBS. The Minutemen’s last win against an FBS school was against Army in 2023. Watson connected with Elijah Faulkner on two touchdowns and Joseph Griffin Jr. for one touchdown as UMass built a 24-7 halftime lead. It was the Minutemen’s first halftime lead against a power conference school since leading Mississippi State in 2017.

Curtis Kimmons IV added a 17-yard TD run to push the UMass lead to 37-14 late in the fourth quarter. KJ Duff, an AP All-America second-team wide receiver caught three TD passes for Rutgers. Watson effectively scattered his 18 completions among seven UMass receivers. The transfer from Virginia Tech was equally comfortable throwing and running the ball primarily out of the shotgun. He picked up 40 yards on six carries, leading UMass to scores in 7 of its 10 drives. - AP College Football

  Logan Inagawa threw for 244 yards and a touchdown and Drake remained unbeaten in the Pioneer Football League by beating Butler 24-19 on Saturday. Drake's Isaiah Bragg returned the opening kickoff 32 yards to the Drake 34. On the first play from scrimmage, Nick Herman took the handoff and ran 66 yards to the end zone for a 7-0 Drake (6-2, 5-0) lead. Butler (5-4, 3-2) tied it on its second drive when Reagan Andrew connected with Archie Cox deep for a 54-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter.

With 2:35 before halftime, Inagawa led an 11-play, 85-yard drive that took 6:11 to put Drake back out front 14-7. Butler took the opening kickoff to the second half and traveled 75 yards in nine plays and scored when Andrew threw a 3-yard touchdown to Chet Yardley. Drake blocked the extra-point attempt to maintain a 14-13 lead. Drake extended its lead to 17-13 on a 51-yard field goal by Harry Balke on the following drive and sealed it early in the fourth when Luke Woodson crashed in from the 1. Andrew scored the final points of the contest when he ran it in from the 3 with 3:38 left. He threw for 191 yards, two touchdowns and was intercepted once. - AP College Football

  Logan Inagawa accounted for three touchdowns, Taj Hughes had 106 yards receiving and a TD on seven receptions and Drake beat Marist 31-17 on Saturday. Jackson Voth returned a punt 46 yards to the 4 and two plays later Luke Woodson ran 4 yards for a TD that gave Drake (5-2, 4-0 Pioneer Football League) the lead for good at 24-17 with 4:59 left in the third quarter. Inagawa was 10-of-13 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns and added 81 yards rushing, which included a 8-yard TD, on 17 carries. Tristan Shannon had 58 yards rushing and scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards for Marist (3-5, 1-3). Drake has won four in a row overall and five straight, dating to last season, in conference play. - AP College Football

  As expected, former Arizona Wildcats linebacker Jerry Roberts is Massachusetts-bound. Roberts, who played two seasons at Arizona after initially starting his career at Bowling Green, joins a plethora of ex-Wildcats transferring to UMass, which is led by former UA defensive coordinator Don Brown. Roberts announced his decision to transfer to UMass on Monday. Other former Wildcats transferring to UMass include defensive linemen JB Brown and Jermaine Wiggins, wide receiver Anthony Simpson and linebacker Tyler Martin.

Roberts started six games for Arizona at middle linebacker in 2021 under Brown before suffering a season-ending leg injury in the next-to-last game of the year. Brown became UMass' head coach last offseason. Former Arizona linebackers coach Keith Dudzinski followed Brown to UMass and became the Minutemen's defensive coordinator. Roberts started all 12 games for the Wildcats' 5-7 season in '22 and finished second on the team with 78 tackles; he also had a pass breakup, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. - Arizona Star News
