2022 ALL-NORTHEAST CONFERENCE FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: DL Donnell Brown, Saint Francis U, R-So,...After an All-NEC Second Team selection in 2021, Brown became the first Defensive Player of the Year and first defensive lineman, alongside teammate Sebastian Benjamin, to earn a First Team honor since 2009. Through consistently drawing double-team attention from opponents, Brown still ranked fourth in the NEC with 13.5 tackles for loss and eighth with 5.5 sacks. He also tied the NEC lead with two fumble recoveries and returned one for a touchdown at Norfolk State on Sept. 24. Brown was one of three Saint Francis players this season to earn an NEC Defensive Player of the Week and he was a three-time NEC Prime Performer. - Saint Francis U Football

Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 342 yards and a touchdown, Roman Hemby ran for three TDs, and the Maryland defense allowed just two first downs through the first 2 1/2 quarters of a 37-0 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. Jeshaun Jones had nine catches for 152 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins, who snapped a three-game losing streak and completed their first seven-win regular season since 2014. Rutgers (4-8, 1-8 Big Ten) finished its season on a five-game skid. Tagovailoa, who has dealt with knee problems this year, missed a few plays during this one, but Maryland (7-5, 4-5) could have won this game even without a big offensive performance.

The Terps lost two fumbles in Rutgers territory in the first quarter, but after stopping the Scarlet Knights on fourth down near midfield, Maryland drove for the game's first touchdown, a 1-yard run by Hemby on the first play of the second. Hemby added another 1-yard TD in the second and an 8-yarder in the third, and Chad Ryland kicked three field goals. Rutgers was shut out for the second time this season, having lost 31-0 to Minnesota in October. This was Maryland's first shutout against a conference opponent since beating Wake Forest 26-0 in 2008, six years before the Terps began playing in the Big Ten. Tagovailoa threw a 27-yard touchdown to Jones in the fourth. It was his 50th TD pass, breaking a tie with Scott Milanovich for Maryland's career lead. - Maryland/AP College Football

2022 NORTHEAST CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: DL Donnell Brown, Saint Francis U,...Brown was a key component of a Red Flash defense that limited opponents to 310.0 yards of offense per game, which ranks ninth in the nation. The Marlboro, PA product made multiple tackles in all 11 games this fall, including a career-high seven in a season-opening overtime setback to FBS opponent Akron, while logging at least 2.0 tackles-for-loss in four of those contests. He was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Week after contributing a lockdown performance that led to a 57-7 win over LIU in October. The 6-foot-3 redshirt sophomore contributed to a Red Flash unit that conceded the fifth-fewest passing yards per game in the nation (159.4) and posted the FCS's fifth-best pass defense efficiency rating in the nation at 108.29. In addition, Brown earned All-NEC distinction for the second time in as many seasons, elevating his status from second team to first team in 2022. - NEC Football

2022 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM: Mike Purcell, Elon, OL, Sr.,...Senior offensive lineman Michael Purcell has been a rock for the Phoenix in 2022, starting all 11 games at center. In fact, Purcell is part of an offensive line unit that has started the same five players for every game in 2022. He is the only member of that offensive line who is a senior and has helped Elon have consistent success offensively. Elon has rushed for 120+ yards in 10-of-11 games this year after reaching that rushing total just one time in 2021. They paved the way for Jalen Hampton to become the program's first 1,000-yard rusher since 2004. The offensive line has also protected quarterback Matthew McKay and the unit is tied for second in the CAA in fewest sacks allowed (1.5 per game). - Elon Football

  11/06/22 - MJ MorrisJr/2026, Maryland + More +

MJ Morris has given No. 21 North Carolina State the spark it needed. The first-year passer threw for three scores while the Wolfpack's defense thrice picked off Sam Hartman to beat No. 20 Wake Forest 30-21 on Saturday night. He threw for 210 yards in becoming the first true freshman in more than 22 years to start for the Wolfpack (7-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), following his three-TD effort in last week's comeback home win against Virginia Tech. This performance, though, came against a ranked instate foe featuring a veteran star quarterback in Hartman leading a high-scoring offense. "He's way ahead of where we thought he would be at this point in his career," Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren said of Morris. Morris hit Darryl Jones for two of his touchdowns and Keyon Lesane for another to lead the offense.

He also directed a key late drive that took four minutes off the clock and set up Christopher Dunn's 25-yard field goal to make it a two-possession game with 2:54 left. And it was another boost for a team that lost preseason ACC player of the year Devin Leary at quarterback to a season-ending injury less than a month ago. "That's one of the things Coach Doeren told me last week: "Just bring that juice because the whole team is going to revolve around you," Morris said. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack's veteran defense got after Hartman for four sacks and plenty of pressure up front. The unit also got an early boost by standing up when the Demon Deacons got a first-and-goal at the 1-yard line, forcing three straight negative-yardage plays followed by a missed field goal. This wasn't the type of performance Dave Clawson wanted from his Demon Deacons (6-3, 2-3), who lost at Louisville last week while committing eight turnovers - six by Hartman in the third quarter alone. Hartman threw for 397 yards and connected with Taylor Morin and A.T. Perry for touchdowns in this one, while Perry had 12 catches for 159 yards. But the Demon Deacons managed just 17 yards rushing to put everything on Hartman's right arm. - NC State/AP College Football

  10/27/22 - MJ MorrisJr/2026, Maryland + More +

First-year quarterback MJ Morris threw for three second-half touchdowns to help No. 24 North Carolina State rally from 18 points down in the third quarter to beat Virginia Tech 22-21 on Thursday night. Morris took over for starter Jack Chambers to lead an unexpected comeback for the Wolfpack (6-2, 2-2 Atalntic Coast Conference), who trailed 21-3 after Grant Wells' 20-yard TD keeper with 4:02 in the third quarter. Instead, N.C. State somehow found a way to make its biggest comeback since rallying from 27 down to beat Maryland in 2011. It also marked the Wolfpack's second comeback from a double-digit deficit after halftime this month, going back to a rally from 17-3 down at the break against Florida State.

This one was arguably more critical for a team that had been reeling offensively since losing quarterback and preseason ACC player of the year Devin Leary to a season-ending injury in that Florida State win. But after looking like every yard was a struggle, Morris and the Wolfpack started pushing the ball downfield and connecting to suddenly change momentum. It started with a 35-yard deep throw from Morris to Thayer Thomas with 1:42 left in the third. Morris followed with a 7-yard score to Trent Pennix early in the fourth, then hit Thomas again on a short throw that the receiver cut up the middle of the field and scored from 18 yards out with 7:38 mark. After its veteran defense forced a three-and-out, the Wolfpack kept the chains moving on a final drive that ate up the last 5:35 to seal the win. Thomas finished with 10 catches for 118 yards and the two scores for the Wolfpack. Wells ran for two scores and hit Kaleb Smith for an 85-yard score in the third for the Hokies (2-6, 1-4). - NC State/AP College Football

Roman Hemby ran for 179 yards and three touchdowns, including a sensational 75-yard sprint with 3:22 remaining that gave Maryland a 31-24 victory over Northwestern on Saturday. The Terrapins (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) overcame the absence of standout quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who aggravated a knee sprain last weekend. This is the earliest they've become bowl eligible since 2001, when they did it on Oct. 11. It wasn't easy. Northwestern tied it at 24 with 3:34 remaining on a 9-yard scoring run by Andrew Clair. On the first play of Maryland's next drive, Hemby slipped through a hole on the left side and outran everyone for the touchdown that put the Terps back in front. Brendan Sullivan's deep pass was intercepted by Maryland's Beau Brade with 3:02 to play. Billy Edwards Jr. - who helped Maryland win at Indiana last weekend after Tagovailoa was carted off - threw for 166 yards and a TD against Northwestern.

The Wildcats (1-6, 1-3) led 17-7 late in the second quarter, but they dropped their sixth straight game since winning the opener against Nebraska in Ireland. Evan Hull ran for 119 yards and caught a touchdown pass for Northwestern. Edwards was under constant pressure in the first half and had to scramble out of trouble quite a bit. The Terps were unable to turn first-and-goal from the 2 into a touchdown at the end of the first half. They settled for a field goal and trailed 17-10. An interception by Dante Trader Jr. early in the third quarter set Maryland up near midfield, and Hemby's 18-yard scoring run eventually tied the game. The Terps took a 24-17 lead later in the quarter on a 30-yard touchdown strike from Edwards to Rakim Jarrett. - Maryland/AP College Football

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa aggravated a previous knee problem last weekend, and coach Michael Locksley expressed relief that the injury wasn't more serious. Locksley said Tagovailoa would be a game time decision this Saturday against Northwestern after the standout quarterback was carted off during his team's win at Indiana. Tagovailoa, whose brother Tua has missed time in the NFL recently following a head injury, left Saturday's game against the Hoosiers early in the fourth quarter. Locksley said Tuesday he initially sprained an MCL in a loss at Michigan last month and then aggravated that against Indiana. Tagovailoa had an MRI after the Michigan game and another one Sunday, and Locksley said the more recent one showed no further structural damage. Tagovailoa was able to return for the next game after the injury at Michigan. - AP College Football
