2022 ALL-NORTHEAST CONFERENCE FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: DL Donnell Brown, Saint Francis U, R-So,...After an All-NEC Second Team selection in 2021, Brown became the first Defensive Player of the Year and first defensive lineman, alongside teammate Sebastian Benjamin, to earn a First Team honor since 2009. Through consistently drawing double-team attention from opponents, Brown still ranked fourth in the NEC with 13.5 tackles for loss and eighth with 5.5 sacks. He also tied the NEC lead with two fumble recoveries and returned one for a touchdown at Norfolk State on Sept. 24. Brown was one of three Saint Francis players this season to earn an NEC Defensive Player of the Week and he was a three-time NEC Prime Performer. - Saint Francis U Football

  11/26/22 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 342 yards and a touchdown, Roman Hemby ran for three TDs, and the Maryland defense allowed just two first downs through the first 2 1/2 quarters of a 37-0 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. Jeshaun Jones had nine catches for 152 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins, who snapped a three-game losing streak and completed their first seven-win regular season since 2014. Rutgers (4-8, 1-8 Big Ten) finished its season on a five-game skid. Tagovailoa, who has dealt with knee problems this year, missed a few plays during this one, but Maryland (7-5, 4-5) could have won this game even without a big offensive performance.

The Terps lost two fumbles in Rutgers territory in the first quarter, but after stopping the Scarlet Knights on fourth down near midfield, Maryland drove for the game's first touchdown, a 1-yard run by Hemby on the first play of the second. Hemby added another 1-yard TD in the second and an 8-yarder in the third, and Chad Ryland kicked three field goals. Rutgers was shut out for the second time this season, having lost 31-0 to Minnesota in October. This was Maryland's first shutout against a conference opponent since beating Wake Forest 26-0 in 2008, six years before the Terps began playing in the Big Ten. Tagovailoa threw a 27-yard touchdown to Jones in the fourth. It was his 50th TD pass, breaking a tie with Scott Milanovich for Maryland's career lead. - Maryland/AP College Football

2022 NORTHEAST CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: DL Donnell Brown, Saint Francis U,...Brown was a key component of a Red Flash defense that limited opponents to 310.0 yards of offense per game, which ranks ninth in the nation. The Marlboro, PA product made multiple tackles in all 11 games this fall, including a career-high seven in a season-opening overtime setback to FBS opponent Akron, while logging at least 2.0 tackles-for-loss in four of those contests. He was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Week after contributing a lockdown performance that led to a 57-7 win over LIU in October. The 6-foot-3 redshirt sophomore contributed to a Red Flash unit that conceded the fifth-fewest passing yards per game in the nation (159.4) and posted the FCS's fifth-best pass defense efficiency rating in the nation at 108.29. In addition, Brown earned All-NEC distinction for the second time in as many seasons, elevating his status from second team to first team in 2022. - NEC Football

2022 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM: Mike Purcell, Elon, OL, Sr.,...Senior offensive lineman Michael Purcell has been a rock for the Phoenix in 2022, starting all 11 games at center. He is the only member of that offensive line who is a senior and has helped Elon have consistent success offensively. Elon has rushed for 120+ yards in 10-of-11 games this year after reaching that rushing total just one time in 2021. They paved the way for Jalen Hampton to become the program's first 1,000-yard rusher since 2004. The offensive line has also protected quarterback Matthew McKay and the unit is tied for second in the CAA in fewest sacks allowed (1.5 per game). - Elon Football

  10/18/22 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa aggravated a previous knee problem last weekend, and coach Michael Locksley expressed relief that the injury wasn't more serious. Locksley said Tagovailoa would be a game time decision this Saturday against Northwestern after the standout quarterback was carted off during his team's win at Indiana. Tagovailoa, whose brother Tua has missed time in the NFL recently following a head injury, left Saturday's game against the Hoosiers early in the fourth quarter. Locksley said Tuesday he initially sprained an MCL in a loss at Michigan last month and then aggravated that against Indiana. Tagovailoa had an MRI after the Michigan game and another one Sunday, and Locksley said the more recent one showed no further structural damage. Tagovailoa was able to return for the next game after the injury at Michigan. - AP College Football

  10/01/22 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa had a lot on his mind this week. That was only natural after his brother Tua was stretchered off with a head injury while playing for the Miami Dolphins. "They're really, really close," Terrapins coach Michael Locksley said. "I think the one thing that was able to settle him down, was he was finally able to get a FaceTime with Tua, and Tua basically said, "Hey, I'm fine man. Go play." Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 314 yards and a touchdown, and Maryland handed Michigan State its third consecutive loss, 27-13 on Saturday.

The Terrapins (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) scored touchdowns on their first two possessions, and the Maryland defense was solid as the Terps passed their first test in what feels like an important October for the program. Payton Thorne threw for 221 yards and a touchdown, but the Spartans (2-3, 0-2) went scoreless in the second half against a Maryland defense that still has a lot to prove. Michigan State also had problems on special teams, missing a field goal, having another one blocked and botching an extra point because of a bad snap. Tagovailoa went 32 of 41 and moved ahead of Boomer Esiason for third place on Maryland's career list in yards passing. "I'll take my hat off to that kid," Locksley said. "You guys have no idea what the last 24 to 48 hours have been like for him." - Maryland/AP College Football

  09/17/22 - Taulia TagovailoarSr/2024, Maryland, 5-11, 185 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Taulia Tagovailoa threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Corey Dyches with 7:30 remaining, and Maryland held on for a 34-27 victory over SMU on Saturday night. Roman Hemby ran for 151 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins, who overcame 15 penalties to win this matchup of flawed-but-unbeaten teams. The Mustangs (2-1) had three of the game's five turnovers, and they lost the ball on downs at the Maryland 9 when Tanner Mordecai's fourth-down pass to the end zone sailed high with 2:31 remaining. SMU got the ball back one more time but turned it over on downs again near midfield with 46 seconds left. Maryland trailed 20-17 at halftime, and the Terrapins (3-0) wasted an opportunity early in the third quarter after driving to the SMU 6. A touchdown pass from Tagovailoa to Jeshaun Jones was wiped out by a holding penalty, and Jones was also called for unsportsmanlike conduct, putting Maryland in a third-and-goal situation back at the 31.

The Terps did manage a field goal to tie the game, but on SMU's next drive, they were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, roughing the passer and pass interference. A fumble by Mordecai inside the Maryland 5 ended that drive, but the Mustangs quickly forced a punt and then took a 27-20 lead on a 7-yard scoring pass from Mordecai to Moochie Dixon. SMU then got the ball back near midfield after a Maryland fumble, but a missed field goal kept the lead at seven, and the Terps drove to tie it on a 1-yard run by Hemby. After an interception by Dante Trader, Maryland had a chance to take the lead. The Terrapins went for it on fourth-and-9 from the SMU 45. Dyches caught a pass a couple yards short, but he dragged linebacker Jimmy Phillips across the line to gain. Moments later, his TD made it 34-27. - Maryland/AP College Football

Notre Dame freshman kickoff specialist Bryce McFerson remains out with a groin injury that caused him to miss the first two games. Freshman walk-on Zac Yoakam has forced touchbacks on half of his six kickoffs, but the Irish rank 100th nationally in average kick return yardage allowed. Tight end Mitchell Evans and running back Jadarian Price are out of walking boots following summer surgeries on their foot and Achilles, respectively.   09/13/22 - Jaelyn DuncanrSr/2023, Maryland, 6-6, 322 (DS#9 OT) + More +

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 11. Jaelyn Duncan, rSr, OT, Maryland, 6-5, 320, 1,...Maryland amassed 617 total yards - 424 in the air, 193 rushing - in a 56-21 romp over the Charlotte 49ers. It was Duncan's 27th college game and he did not add to the seven sacks he gave up in his career. It was a mismatch that won't be at the top of his resume. Previous week, No. 13: Terp quarterback Taulia Tagovailo and a dynamic receiving crew got all the attention as Maryland mauled the Buffalo Bulls, 31-10. But somebody assisted in gathering 445 total yards, with 297 passing and that somebody was massive offensive tackle Jaelyn Duncan, who was second team All-Big Ten last year and is on the ascent. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout
