Billy Edwards Jr. threw two touchdown passes to Tai Felton, and Maryland's defense was as good as advertised in a 50-7 victory over UConn in a season opener on Saturday. The big question facing the Terrapins this season is how they'll do without Taulia Tagovailoa, who brought them some rare stability at quarterback for the last four years. Edwards, who guided Maryland to a win over Auburn in the Music City Bowl last season, started the game and completed his first seven passes. He went 20 of 27 for 311 yards and two TDs. Felton caught seven passes for 178 yards, scoring on strikes of 18 and 75 yards from Edwards.

NC State transfer MJ Morris also played a bit at quarterback, although he was shaken up in the fourth quarter. Then Cameron Edge came on and threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Josiah McLaurin. Nolan Ray scored on a 48-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that made it 14-0, and Roman Hemby scored from 4 yards out in the third. DeJuan Williams capped the scoring with a 9-yard run with 1:17 remaining in the game. The Terps' defense has steadily improved over the past few years, and UConn didn't score until it was 30-0 late in the third quarter. The senior is one of only three Maryland defensive players to start in all 12 games this season and has helped lead the Terps pass defense that stands top-20 in the nation in defensive passing efficiency and has seven games of allowing under 210 passing yards. 2023 ALL-BIG TEN SECOND TEAM: Tarheeb Still, Maryland,...Still currently ranks third nationally in interceptions per game (0.5) and fifth nationally in total interceptions (5). The senior had a pair of interceptions in each of Maryland's wins over Virginia and Nebraska, making him one of only three FBS players to have two games with two interceptions. Still was named the Jim Thorpe National Defensive Back of the Week and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after his two-interception performance at Nebraska. Maryland football has finalized its coaching staff for the 2023 season with the additions of offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and safeties coach Zac Spavital, the program announced Thursday. Gattis, who will also coach quarterbacks at Maryland, was the offensive coordinator at Miami in 2022, but the school fired him after one season. The Hurricanes logged 23.6 points and 367.1 yards per game. Gattis has experience in the Big Ten, working as Michigan's offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021. Gattis won the 2021 Broyles Award, given to the nation's top assistant. "The additions of Josh and Zac really bolsters our already strong coaching staff," Coach Michael Locksley said in a statement. "Josh and I have a strong relationship and a proven track record of working together to produce a potent offense. He and I share many of the same philosophies, and it should be a very smooth transition. Zac comes to us with a history of being part of defenses that have a tremendous amount of success, especially when it comes to being aggressive and taking the ball away."

Gattis will be part of a new-look offensive staff after Locksley lost his top two offensive assistants after last season. Locksley recently hired longtime college head coach Kevin Sumlin as the co-coordinator and tight ends coach. Gattis worked with Locksley at Alabama in 2018, when Locksley led the record-setting Crimson Tide offense and Gattis served as the co-coordinator and wide receivers coach. At Maryland, Gattis will inherit an offense led by quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who will be Maryland's starter for the fourth straight season. Jakorian Bennett doesn't know what his life would be like without football. Maybe he would've stuck with track, but his answer didn't seem definitive. He spent a minute trying to envision a scenario where he wasn't the starting cornerback at Maryland, and nothing came to mind. Football has meant everything to Bennett, but life without it was almost a reality. He was an undersized defensive back who rarely touched the field through three years at McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Alabama. Bennett was on the verge of walking away from football when his former defensive backs coach, TJ McCord, told him "if you start quitting now, you are gonna quit everything for the rest of your life."

A spark was ignited. Bennett starred as a senior and then went on to play at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where he garnered 27 Division I offers before choosing Maryland. Three years after arriving in College Park, he can sit back and say his long journey has paid off. Bennett, who leads all Power Five players in passes defended (27) since 2021, is a two-time All-Big Ten honorable mention and has a chance to go to the NFL, a goal he didn't realize was possible until his last year of junior college. Taulia Tagovailoa announced Wednesday he is returning to Maryland to play next season. Tagovailoa, who holds a slew of school passing records, will try to help the Terrapins continue their recent rise under coach Michael Locksley. Maryland has won bowl games each of the past two seasons after finishing below .500 in the previous six. "My goal when coming to Maryland was to help Coach Locksley turn this program around," Tagovailoa said. "After winning back-to-back bowl games, I believe we have things going in the right direction. But we're not done yet. I'm not done yet."

The Terps went 8-5 this past season and were competitive against both Michigan and Ohio State. Tagovailoa, the brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, has stabilized the QB position at Maryland. He holds the program's career records for yards passing, completions, completion percentage, touchdowns passing and total offense. He also holds single-season records for yards passing, completions, completion percentage and touchdowns passing. Maryland also returns standout running back Roman Hemby and tight end Corey Dyches, although wide receiver Rakim Jarrett decided to enter the NFL draft. - AP College Football

Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa is Maryland's all-time leader in career passing yards (7,658), total offensive yards (7.843), passing touchdowns (50) and completion percentage (68%). In 2021, he established single-season school records for passing yards (3,860), completions (328), completion percentage (69.2%) and touchdowns (26). This past season, Tagovailoa was named second-team All-Big Ten Conference by the coaches after completing 262 of 391 passes (67%) for 3,008 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Tagovailoa is currently contemplating whether to return to Maryland for his senior season or declare for the NFL draft. He is the younger brother of Miami Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. If Tagovailoa does return to the Terps, he has a chance to climb further up the Big Ten's all-time record book. The Hawaii native is currently ranked 42nd in league history in touchdown passes, 35th in passing yards and 33rd in completions. - Capital Times
