  09/23/19 - Bailey HalerSr/2020, Louisiana Tech, 5-11, 197 (DS#36 K) + More +

SEPT 23/WEEK 4 CONFERENCE USA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Louisiana Tech senior K Bailey Hale continued his success in the kicking game on Friday evening, connecting on all five of his field goal tries (5-for-5 from 25 (twice), 29, 41 and 45) and all four of his extra-point attempts in a conference-opening win over FIU. His 19 points were the most scored by a C-USA kicker since September 2014 and tied for the third-most ever by a C-USA kicker. Hale's 5-for-5 outing tied the LA Tech program record (which Hale also matched last season at North Texas). The Iowa Park, Texas native became just one of four Bulldog kickers to connect on five FGA twice in a career. Since missing his first two FG attempts of the season in Tech's opener, Hale has made seven consecutive field goals. He is also a perfect 13-for-13 on extra points this season. - Conference USA Football

Justin Henderson rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns, Bailey Hale tied a program record with five field goals and Louisiana Tech beat Florida International 43-31 on Friday night. Hale kicked field goals of 41, 25 and 29 yards in the fourth quarter to give Tech a 36-24 lead with 2:17 remaining. FIU snapped Tech's 16-0 scoring run with an 8-play, 72-yard scoring drive to get within 36-31 with 51 seconds left. But Amik Robertson ran back the ensuing onside kick 30 yards for a TD to seal it.

J'Mar Smith tossed two touchdown passes, Jaqwis Dancy ran for two scores and Amik Robertson added a pick-6 to propel Louisiana Tech to a 35-7 romp over Bowling Green on Saturday. Smith completed 19 of 26 passes for the Bulldogs (2-1) for 267 yards. The Falcons came into the game allowing just 106 yards through the air in their first two games. Bowling Green (1-2) took the opening kickoff and moved 68 yards in seven plays with Bryson Denley scoring on a 1-yard run for a 7-0 lead. But it took just three plays for the Bulldogs to pull even, with Smith hooking up with Isaiah Graham for a 49-yard scoring strike.

Dancy ran it in from the 8-yard line late in the second quarter to extend the lead at halftime. Justin Henderson led the Bulldogs with 95 rushing yards on nine carries.   Austin Kendall threw three touchdown passes to lead West Virginia to a 44-27 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday. Kennedy McKoy helped West Virginia's run game break out of a slump with a pair of scores, and the Mountaineers (2-1) had by far their highest offensive production of the season one week after looking lethargic in a 38-7 loss at Missouri. Kendall had first-half TD tosses of 20 and 13 yards. His 25-yard run early in the fourth quarter set up his 9-yard scoring toss to freshman Ali Jennings for a 38-27 lead. Kendall went 27 of 40 for 272 yards with an interception.

West Virginia broke a 21-21 halftime tie with the help of its defense, which had been criticized by the coaching staff for 22 missed tackles a week ago. North Carolina State (2-1) managed just 97 yards of offense in the second half. Sophomore Matthew McKay threw a first-quarter touchdown pass but was harassed all game in his first road start. McKay finished 23 of 48 for 207 yards. He was 9 of 24 for 72 yards after halftime. - AP College Football/West Virginia Football

J'Mar Smith threw for 220 yards and a score and Louisiana Tech held off Grambling for a 20-14 victory on Saturday. Although the schools are located five miles apart, it was just the second meeting between the teams. Louisiana Tech beat the Tigers 20-6 in 2010 at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana. Louisiana Tech (1-1) jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead before Jakarie Nichols scored on a 12-yard run to cap a 93-yard drive for Grambling (0-2). A turnover and a failed fourth-down conversion stalled consecutive long drives from the Tigers, but Grambling found the end zone when Nichols scored on a 2-yard run with 3:23 to play.

The Tigers recovered the ensuing onside kick but then couldn't convert a first down. Justin Henderson ran for a 7-yard touchdown in the first quarter for the Bulldogs. Smith threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Griffin Hebert, and Bailey Hale kicked two field goals in the second quarter. The game was dubbed the Buddy Bowl in honor of Orville Kince (O.K. "Buddy") Davis, a Ruston, Louisiana, native who covered the Tigers and Bulldogs for the Ruston Daily Leader. The 73-year-old Davis died on July 13 in Ruston. - AP College Football

Austin Kendall loved the outcome but wasn't happy that West Virginia's offense struggled for much of the game against a Championship Subdivision opponent. The Oklahoma graduate transfer threw two second-half touchdown passes in his debut for the Mountaineers, who needed a comeback to hold off James Madison 20-13 Saturday. "We've got to be better as a team, especially me," Kendall said. "We've got to be better on offense."

Kendall couldn't generate a ton of yards under constant pressure but did just enough to give Neal Brown a victory in his first game as West Virginia's coach while preventing the Mountaineers from losing to an FCS opponent for the first time. West Virginia's strengths entering the season were its depth at running back and on the offensive and defensive lines. All of those units underperformed as James Madison dominated the line of scrimmage for a good portion of the game. The Mountaineers averaged just 1.4 yards per rush, leaving it up to Kendall to bail them out. He did - barely. - AP College Football

Oklahoma graduate transfer Austin Kendall has been named West Virginia's starting quarterback for the Aug. 31 season opener against FCS James Madison. West Virginia coach Neal Brown on Tuesday announced the choice of Kendall, who beat out three others. At Oklahoma, Kendall backed up Baker Mayfield in 2016 and Kyler Murray last season. His decision to leave drew intense scrutiny when Oklahoma initially sought to block the move. For his career, Kendall has completed 28 of 39 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. - AP College Football

Tennessee defensive back Baylen Buchanan has a spinal condition that makes his status for this season uncertain. Buchanan started all 12 games for Tennessee last year but hasn't been participating in preseason practice. Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt said Tuesday that Buchanan is being held out because "basically we've discovered that he has kind of a narrowing of the spine."

Pruitt says Tennessee has sent Buchanan to various specialists and added that "one thing you've got to figure out is if this is something he's had the whole time he's played, or is this something that's happened right now." Buchanan, the son of former All-Pro defensive back Ray Buchanan, made 49 tackles as a junior last season while playing cornerback, safety and nickel back. Pruitt noted Buchanan still has a redshirt year available if necessary. - AP College Football
