Briley Moore is moving on after one season at Kansas State. Moore, a tight end who joined K-State as a graduate transfer earlier this year, announced Saturday he would forgo an opportunity to return in 2021 to focus on preparing for the NFL draft. Like all seniors, Moore had a chance to come back for a sixth season. Earlier this year, the NCAA ruled that all fall athletes, regardless of how many or few games they play this season, would not have this year count against their eligibility given the upheaval induced by the coronavirus pandemic. While Iowa football has dealt with multiple transfer-portal departures this season, the latest entry is the first who had significant playing time during his Hawkeye tenure. Redshirt sophomore defensive back Julius Brents entered the transfer portal Monday, a source confirmed to HawkCentral. He is the fifth Iowa player to do so since the 2020 season began, joining running back Shadrick Byrd, linebacker Yahweh Jeudy, wide receiver Calvin Lockett and defensive back Daraun McKinney. But unlike the previous four, Brents had worked his way into the two-deep at times in Iowa City. The 6-foot-2 cornerback from Indianapolis was in the starting lineup for a five-game stretch as a true freshman in 2018, cracking Iowa's first-team defense against Minnesota, Indiana, Maryland, Penn State and Purdue. Saturday's game moved Martinez into fourth place on Nebraska's career passing yardage list - he's now at 5,262 - as he passed Dave Humm and Joe Ganz. His work on the ground put him over 1,500 career rushing yards, and moved him within 10 yards of his coach, Frost, for seventh on NU's quarterback rushing list. For the second week in a row, Martinez was efficient, too. Combined with an 18-for-20 effort against Iowa, Martinez is 41-for-50 for 416 yards through the air over the past two weeks. "I would say Luke (McCaffrey) and I have been pushing each other at practice, Coach (Matt) Lubick, Coach Verdu (Mario Verduzco), we've just all been really honed in on the details," Martinez said. "And our receivers have really started to come into their own - that's Levi (Falck), Oliver (Martin), our tight ends - they're all helping us out a tremendous amount. So I feel really good about those guys and I know Luke does, as well. "We've just been chopping at it."

It's been a lot of chopping for Martinez throughout the season. It appears, though, all that work is beginning to show results. "I think it's a little bit of everybody. Part of that goes on us with receivers and running backs and tight ends moving in practice the way we should be to make sure that Adrian's confident whenever we get out to the games," NU receiver Wan'Dale Robinson said. Adrian Martinez ran for two touchdowns and passed for another to help Nebraska to a 37-27 victory over Purdue on Saturday. Martinez completed 23 of 30 passes for 242 yards and rushed for another 45 yards for the Cornhuskers. Both teams are 2-4 in the Big Ten-only schedule. Nebraska took a 34-13 lead on Martinez's 1-yard touchdown run early in the second half. Purdue bounced back to narrow the deficit to 34-27 with two Jack Plummer touchdown passes. However, Nebraska regained control with an eight play, 79-yard drive capped by Connor Culp's 32-yard field goal, his third, with 7:04 to play.

Plummer connected with Payne Durham for a 20-yard touchdown with 1:29 left in third quarter and hooked up with David Bell for an 89-yard score with 12:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. Two Nebraska defenders ran into each other leaving Bell wide open. Plummer completed 33 of 47 passes for 334 yards. Martinez completed 14 of 19 passes in the first half to help the Cornhuskers take a 27-13 halftime lead. Because of the turmoil caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic, the NCAA granted all players what essentially amounts to a free year, opening the door for seniors to return next year. But rather than forcing their hand in deciding before they're ready, K-State is moving ahead with the traditional tribute and sorting out those details later. Defensive tackle Drew Wiley, a first-year starter enjoying a breakout senior season, said that while Klieman has stayed out of it, deciding whether or not to return has been a hot topic of conversation among members of his class.

"I think it comes up pretty much every day, talking about that," Wiley said. "It's just such a different situation. "It's kind of unprecedented. It's never really happened before, so we discuss it quite often." It certainly has weighed on Wiley, who was not yet ready to share his intentions. "Obviously, it's a huge decision," he said. "I've put a lot of thought into it, actually, and I do kind of have my mind made up, but I don't really think this is the place to discuss it right now. "But the process was a lot of consulting people that I trusted. A lot of talking to my family (and) talking to coaches. Doing a little bit of praying, trying to figure out what was the best path or what will be the right path moving forward." - Topeka Capital Journal

Adrian Martinez has been through more than a few ups and downs over the course of his Nebraska football career so far. Up until a couple of weeks ago, though, he had never been benched. That marked a tough moment for the junior and two-time captain from Fresno, California. Instead of wilting or throwing in the towel, though, he made a decision. "My mindset was that of a captain. Our captains are voted on by the team, and that's something that means a lot to me," Martinez told reporters Monday. "It's an honor, and I owe it to those guys to give it everything I have; that was really my mindset.

"Regardless of the fact that I've been demoted, I was going to be there to support Luke (McCaffrey) and support our team because, I mean, that's what matters. That's what I came here to do, and my mindset didn't shift. I wanted to win. I still want to win, and showing up each and every day with that type of attitude and mindset? It's what leaders do. It's what good leaders do." This conversation, perhaps, is even more pertinent to the current state of affairs at Nebraska than the fact that he returned to the starting lineup Friday against Iowa.
