Game on the line and two seconds on the clock, Kansas kicker Liam Jones prepared for a gifted second-chance opportunity. "From a mental standpoint, that last kick had to be my first kick of the game," Jones said. Moments before, Douglas Coleman fumbled on a blocked field goal return, and Jones capitalized with a 32-yard field goal to give Kansas a 37-34 win over Texas Tech on Saturday night. Nick McCann blocked Jones' 40-yard attempt and the ball landed in the hands of Coleman, who ran to his left before attempting a lateral that did not touch another Tech player. Kansas regained possession and Jones sealed their first Big 12 win of the season. "We played our hearts out," Kansas coach Les Miles said. "Early til late. Down to the wire. Final drive. They won a game."

Kansas (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) overcome an early three-possession deficit -- and the ejection of team captain Bryce Tornedon for targeting. Trailing 17-0 midway through the second quarter, the Jayhawks rallied heading into halftime, cutting the deficit to 17-14 as Carter Stanley rushed into the end zone to get Kansas on the board and then connected with Stephon Robinson for a 48-yard touchdown the following drive. The Red Raiders leading 34-27 with 12:11 remaining in the fourth quarter, a 34-yard rush by Velton Gardner tied the game for Kansas. A crucial late stop by the Jayhawk defense set up the winning 52-yard drive. Stanley fueled the Jayhawk victory with 415 yards passing and four total touchdowns. Stephon Robinson Jr. caught six passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns. - Kansas/AP College Football

Kansas coach Les Miles' return to college football brought him some quick joy. It also brought the Jayhawks something they haven't had in a long time - a road win at a Power 5 school. Carter Stanley threw for three touchdowns, Khalil Herbert rushed for 187 yards on just 11 carries and Kansas stunned Boston College 48-24 Friday night for its first road win over a Power 5 team in nearly 11 years. The Jayhawks (2-1), who entered as a three-touchdown underdog, won their first road game against a power conference opponent since a victory at Iowa State on Oct. 4, 2008, a span of 48 straight losses. Pooka Williams ran for 121 yards on 22 attempts with a TD, and Herbert added a late score. Stanley was 20-of-27 for 238 yards with an interception on his first attempt.

"If anybody wants to know why a guy would come back to college football, this tells you how fun and how important college football is," said Miles, hired by the school last November after being fired from LSU two years ago. "It shows the Jayhawks are coming," he said. "I think it's very realistic that we can be a great program and have real quality football teams year after year -- not today, not tomorrow. Shortly in the future." - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - Carter StanleyrSr/2020, Kansas, 6-2, 198 (DS#39 QB) + More +

Les Miles promised to bring excitement to the perpetually rebuilding football program at Kansas. The Jayhawks made his debut a little more exciting than he hoped. After a late fumble in the end zone resulted in a go-ahead touchdown for Indiana State, Carter Stanley calmly led the Jayhawks right back downfield. His 22-yard touchdown throw to Daylon Charlot with 2:20 left in the game allowed Kansas to escape with a 24-17 season-opening victory Saturday.

"I think we'll learn to win games like this without this much drama," said Miles, who built Oklahoma State into a winner before leading LSU to a national championship. "I think we can throw the football to a number of guys and rush the football better and more efficiently than we did today and that would make - might distance ourselves from the opponent." There was hardly a speck of daylight between Kansas and Indiana State most of the day. The Sycamores had clawed back from a 16-3 deficit, taking the lead when Stanley fumbled in the end zone and Inoke Moala recovered it for a touchdown with 4:24 left in the game. But the Jayhawks' senior quarterback calmly responded to adversity, hitting Andrew Parchment with a couple of passes, finding Charlot for a 26-yard gain then hitting him again for the go-ahead score. - AP College Football

  08/11/19 - Daylon CharlotrSr/2020, Kansas, 5-11, 203 (DS#134 WR) + More +

With depth questions for KU at wide receiver, however, Charlot enters this year with preseason hype, a familiar feeling but one that could prove accurate if the pass catcher's own prognostications come true - asked Saturday whether he has the ability to compete for a spot as a No. 1 receiver in the Big 12, Charlot went even further. "Oh yeah - No. 1 receiver in the country," Charlot said. "Yeah, yeah. I'm competing for the No. 1 receiver in the country." He continued. "So I mean, like I said, it's going to be a great year after all the adversity I've faced. I just prayed about it," Charlot said. "So I'm really competing with the No. 1 receiver in the country." Some who have experienced similar setbacks to what Charlot has endured wouldn't carry as much swagger.

Charlot has most notably battled a litany of injuries throughout his collegiate career, the most severe coming in preseasons. Those ailments - Charlot said he suffered a knee injury a week before last year's season opener, for example - put him behind the eight ball from the outset. While there's still practices to be had ahead of the Jayhawks' 11 a.m. Aug. 31 season opener against Indiana State at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, Charlot believes those woes are in the past, now labeling himself "very healthy." "Now I'm ready to roll and the season is just right around the corner," Charlot said. - Topeka Capital Journal

  07/29/19 - Bryce TornedenSr/2020, Kansas, 5-10, 190 (DS#41 SS) + More +

Since the moment he stepped on campus, Bryce Torneden has been willing to do whatever it takes for the Kansas football team. Torneden has played multiple positions in the KU secondary throughout his career. As one of the leaders of the Kansas defense, Torneden's ultimate goal is to help get the Jayhawks back on track in his final season. That is something the senior safety mentioned many times during the spring. During Big 12 Media Days, though, Torneden was asked about his personal goals for 2019. Only one is on his mind with preseason camp just around the corner.

"Ultimately, I want to be All-Big 12 at the end of the year," Torneden said. "In doing that, I'm going to have to take everyday for what it is. I just need to stack the days upon each other." But it is a goal that doesn't seem too far-fetched, at least considering Torneden's career trajectory. In 2018, Torneden was listed on the honorable mention team as voted on by the Big 12 coaches. Torneden ranked second on the Kansas defense in tackles with 91, recording 5.5 tackles-for-loss and two sacks in his 12 starts last season. - Lawrence Journal World

Les Miles wasted no time addressing the biggest story around his Kansas football program. In his opening statement at Big 12 Media Days on Monday, Miles said, "There is no violence - violence will not be accepted with women, period. Action was taken immediately." The "action" Miles alluded to was the suspension of running back Pooka Williams in December - a suspension announced the same day as Williams' arrest on suspicion of domestic battery. After spending more than seven months away from the team, Williams was reinstated July 8. But he won't be eligible to play in KU's season opener Aug. 31 against Indiana State, with the university suspending him for one game as a result of his actions.

Miles stands by the way he handled the situation. "We felt like a strong point was the made not only with Pooka Williams, but with the team," said Miles, entering his first year as the Jayhawks' head coach. "For seven and a half months Pooka was going through a process and he didn't have the opportunity to spend time with his team, go to the weight room, you know, just be a part. Pooka went through legal investigation with the legal community. Pooka also had a proceeding that went through the conduct board at the university, and he basically understood that if he did not meet the criteria that the board asked that this would not last long. He really met every criteria that he could." - Manhattan Mercury

New Kansas coach Les Miles says top running back Pooka Williams has been reinstated to the team, seven months after he was arrested and charged with domestic battery in a case involving an 18-year-old woman. Williams later reached a domestic violence diversion agreement with the local district attorney's office. Miles says Williams, who will be suspended for the season opener Aug. 31 against Indiana State, went through a legal investigation and code of conduct proceedings with the university. Williams ran for 1,125 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman last season. Miles was the head coach at Oklahoma State from 2001-04 before going to LSU, where he won a national championship. - AP College Football

The Kansas football team's undeniable star a season ago, running back Pooka Williams, is rejoining the program after a seven-month suspension. Williams, who was arrested and charged with domestic battery in December before reaching a diversion agreement in the case, will miss the Jayhawks' season opener versus Indiana State as part of his punishment, KU announced on Monday.

"My behavior was unacceptable, and I'm very sorry to those who were impacted by my poor choices," Williams said in a news release from KU Athletics. "I am disappointed in myself, not just as a man, but as a student-athlete looked up to by younger kids. My suspension from football has been hard, but I have learned from it. I'm thankful I can continue with my education at KU. Looking ahead, the most important thing to me is to regain the trust and respect of my classmates, teammates, and fans. I am humbled to return to football and to prepare for the season." - KUSports.com
