  11/04/20 - Kenny Logan Jr.rSr/2024, Kansas, 5-11, 209 (DS#21 SS) + More +

On the wrong end of another blowout defeat Saturday, Kansas football could at least take solace in what turned into a breakout game for safety Kenny Logan. No stranger to those kinds of performances himself, wide receiver Andrew Parchment has a working theory on what allowed his sophomore teammate to produce highlight after highlight. "That's Florida, you know what I mean," said Parchment, a product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. "I feel like once Kansas gets down in Florida for the next couple of (recruiting) classes, I feel like we'll have a lot more players just like that." Territorial pride aside, Logan was a sorely needed revelation for the Jayhawks. KU (0-6, 0-5 Big 12) fell 52-22 to then-No. 23 Iowa State at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, but it wasn't for a lack of trying from Logan. The St. Augustine, Fla., native - one of seven Sunshine State players on the Jayhawk roster - notched both a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown and an interception in the second half of a contest that saw KU trail by just 16 with seven minutes remaining.

A former three-star recruit, Logan also had three tackles and one pass breakup versus the Cyclones. It was an outing head coach Les Miles said he sensed Logan would be capable of when he offered the 6-foot, 195-pounder a spot in his first Jayhawk recruiting class. "We watched his film. We did an evaluation. He is just what you saw (Saturday)," Miles said. "He has the potential to break a play. He has that potential to break a game open. Yeah, I probably underexpressed his talent, but his talent is pretty extreme. He's fast and tough and will strike you. "Yeah, I think we'll look forward to him for quite some time." - Topeka Capital Journal

  10/27/20 - Jalon DanielsrSr/2026, Kansas, 6-0, 220 (DS#28 QB) + More +

The Jayhawks are relying on freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels to run their offense, one that lost its best player in running back Pooka Williams to an opt-out. Daniels has completed 57% of his passes for 381 yards, an interception and no touchdowns. "He's had the ability to use his legs to make plays down the field," Campbell said. "He's got a really strong arm. He can make all the throws, and then on top of it, as soon as you want to play pass coverage, he's got such good athletic ability, he can make you pay in the running game. "It'll challenge the discipline and detail of who we are and certainly who we want to be on defense." - Des Moines Register

  10/25/20 - *Pooka Williams Jr.Jr/2021, Kansas, 5-10, 170 (DS#20 RB) + More +

According to Kansas football head coach Les Miles, the Jayhawks are expecting to have running back Pooka Williams back on the roster in 2021. Williams' decision earlier this week to opt out came without much clarity on his future plans. But Miles, fielding questions from reporters for the first time since the announcement, said on Saturday the star rusher could be back on campus for the spring semester. "What he said is in January that he's coming back," Miles shared following the Jayhawks' first game without Williams, a 55-14 loss at Kansas State. "So it'll be interesting to see," Miles added. "Certainly we'd love to have him."

In Williams' absence, sophomore Velton Gardner handled most of the load at running back, as anticipated. Gardner rushed for 72 yards on 16 carries, while true freshman Daniel Hishaw Jr. added 14 yards on six rushes. "When (Williams) left, he left to be with his mother, who's sick," Miles responded during his postgame press conference, when asked whether Williams might transfer or enter the 2021 NFL Draft. "I think those minutes and time are something that he'll look back on and not regret leaving the team to be with his mom." - Lawrence Journal World

  10/23/20 - Jason BeanrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-2, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Bean offers the type of dual-threat ability UNT has rarely had at quarterback over the years. He might not be as refined of a pocket passer as Aune. That didn't matter in the Mean Green's win over MTSU because he poses a constant threat in the running game. Bean broke free for a pair of 48-yard touchdown runs, guided UNT to 768 yards of offense and pulled the Mean Green out of a three-game slide. "The way I can run changes things a little bit," Bean said. Yeah, it does. Bean rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns to help move UNT to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in Conference USA play. What made the performance even more impressive was Bean did enough in the passing game while throwing for 181 yards and two touchdowns to keep MTSU honest. And don't forget Bean came into UNT's game against the Blue Raiders stone cold. He was planted firmly on the Mean Green's bench the last two weeks while Aune cleared the 300-yard mark in passing yards in losses to Southern Miss and Charlotte. "Jason stepped in and made some huge plays," UNT coach Seth Littrell said. "I'm proud of the way he stayed ready. That takes maturity. At some point in time we are going to need both of those guys." - Denton Record

  10/22/20 - *Pooka Williams Jr.Jr/2021, Kansas, 5-10, 170 (DS#20 RB) + More +

Pooka Williams has opted out of the remainder of the 2020 college football season, a decision that could signal the end of the standout junior running back's electrifying Kansas career. Williams, a preseason All-Big 12 selection, announced his decision to step away from the program Monday night via a graphic posted to Twitter. A likely NFL Draft selection when his collegiate career ends, Williams is eligible to take that path beginning next spring. If Williams' collegiate career is over, it ended with a bang. Williams returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown on his final touch in last Saturday's 38-17 defeat at West Virginia, a play that represented his 18th touchdown with the Jayhawks - 12 rushing, four receiving, one passing and that special teams highlight.

Through two-plus seasons, the all-purpose player compiled 415 rushing attempts for 2,382 yards (5.7 yards per carry) and 66 receptions for 534 yards. Williams' junior campaign has been a struggle, though - he carried the ball 11 times for just 21 yards against the Mountaineers, dropping his yards per carry to 3.8 in 51 totes. Playing through an ankle injury sustained early in the Jayhawks' season, Williams has also struggled to find openings behind a largely ineffective offensive line. - Topeka Capital Journal

  10/19/20 - Jason BeanrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-2, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

OCT 19 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: North Texas redshirt sophomore RB Jason Bean entered the game against Middle Tennessee with the Mean Green down 21-7 early in the second quarter on Saturday. The redshirt sophomore was a game-changer, accounting for 350 total yards and five touchdowns in a little under three quarters, while leading North Texas to a 52-35 win on the road. Bean completed 12-of-17 passes for 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns with no interceptions, while rushing 10 times for a career-high 169 yards and three scores as the Mean Green outscored the Blue Raiders 45-14 with Bean in the game.

The 350 yards accounted for 46% of North Texas' total of 768 yards, a new program record, and also the second-highest offensive output in college football this season (UCF put up 798 this week in a losing effort). The Mansfield, Texas, native accounted for a touchdown run of four yards and a pair of scores from 48 yards out. Bean's touchdown passes were of nine yards to Deonte Simpson and 55 yards to the nation's leading receiver, Jaelon Darden. Bean was also named a Manning Award Star of the Week and was named to the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 list for his performance. - Conference USA Football

  10/17/20 - Jason BeanrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-2, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Backup Jason Bean rushed for three touchdowns, passed for two more and North Texas rallied to beat Middle Tennessee 52-35 on Saturday. The Mean Green trailed 28-14 at halftime but then scored five unanswered touchdowns that included three Bean runs - two going for 48 yards each - and passes of 9 yards to Donte Simpson and 55 yards to Jaelon Darden. That left North Texas ahead 49-28 with 11 minutes remaining in the game. Bean finished with 169 yards rushing on 10 carries and was 12-of-17 passing for 181 yards as the Mean Green rolled up 768 total yards, snapping the school record of 721 set in their season-opening win over Houston Baptist. Bean entered the game in the second quarter after Austin Aune threw two interceptions and had a fumble turn into a Blue Raiders touchdown. DeAndre Torrey rushed for 143 yards and two scores and Tre Siggers added 101 yards rushing. Darden caught 10 passes for 204 yards for the Mean Green (2-3, 1-2 Conference USA). Asher O'Hara passed for three touchdowns and Chaton Mobley rushed for 156 yards and a score for the Blue Raiders (1-5, 1-3). - North Texas/AP College Football

  10/07/20 - *Pooka Williams Jr.Jr/2021, Kansas, 5-10, 170 (DS#20 RB) + More +

After Pooka Williams Jr. finished with only 32 rushing yards against Oklahoma State in the Kansas football team's 47-7 homecoming loss, head coach Les Miles addressed the challenging day for the junior running back. "Well, I can tell you it's not Pooka," Miles said of Williams' struggles, seemingly referencing blocking issues encountered by KU's offensive line. "It's going to be another position group. Because he does those things that you can't coach." The Jayhawks (0-3 overall, 0-2 Big 12) handed the ball to their star playmaker 14 times against the Cowboys (3-0, 2-0). Williams left the game in the third quarter because of an injury, the nature of which was not disclosed. He averaged just 2.8 yards per carry.

His 32 rushing yards were easily his lowest total of the season, and the worst since the last time KU faced OSU, in 2019 (12 carries, 26 yards). The output this past weekend was the third-lowest in Williams' 25 career appearances. KU's game plan also involved trying to keep Williams involved on special teams as a kickoff returner. The speedy junior from Louisiana couldn't find the space to bust open a long return, though, averaging 18 yards on six attempts. His longest went for 31. The injury on Saturday was the second one Williams had suffered this season. "The good news is it's a nick," Miles said Monday during the Big 12 coaches teleconference, "and we figure we'll have him back here after the bye week." - Lawrence Journal World

  10/03/20 - *Pooka Williams Jr.Jr/2021, Kansas, 5-10, 170 (DS#20 RB) + More +

There's a growing consensus among those who closely follow Kansas football: Pooka Williams is deserving of, and should receive, more touches on game day. That conclusion has been reached out of the combination of both the junior running back's top-tier abilities - on display in limited spurts across his team's first two contests - and evaluations of a Jayhawk offense that has too often been an eyesore. Williams, however, doesn't appear to have strong feelings about that consensus - at least, it isn't something the preseason All-Big 12 selection is politicking for publicly.

"I'm a team player," said Williams, speaking after the Jayhawks' 47-14 defeat last Saturday at Baylor. "I mean, I want everybody on the field to eat." While Williams' team-first answer struck the right chord following that lopsided defeat, it did little to quell those calling for more carries for the former four-star recruit. That group gained a very notable member Monday in KU head coach Les Miles. "I see Pooka getting better and better. One thing about Pooka: He's got leadership abilities. He is one of the more natural runners that I have ever seen," Miles said. "...I'd like to get him a few more touches to be honest with you." - Topeka Capital Journal

SEPT 28 SUN BELT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Lorenzo McCaskill, Louisiana,...Had a monster game against Georgia Southern, posting 14 tackles in the victory that improved Louisiana to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt...His performance marked his third-straight double-digit tackle performance. He is the only player in the Sun Belt Conference to post a double-digit tackle performance in all of his games this season.   09/28/20 - Jalon DanielsrSr/2026, Kansas, 6-0, 220 (DS#28 QB) + More +

Kansas football coach Les Miles started and stuck with true freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels in the Jayhawks' 47-14 loss at Baylor. Nevertheless, KU's quarterback situation going forward remained more murky than transparent late Saturday night. If an injury to senior QB Thomas MacVittie, who started and subbed in and out during the Jayhawks' loss to Coastal Carolina, opened the door for Daniels, Miles wouldn't say. The head coach instead pointed to the talents the young QB displayed during practices when asked why Daniels got the starting job. "You probably saw his arm. You didn't see the highlights of his arm," Miles said. "We know the highlights he is capable of producing."

A 6-foot, 200-pound freshman from Lawndale, Calif., Daniels finished 19-for-33 passing in his first career start, throwing for 159 yards, without any touchdowns or interceptions - though some good fortune kept a couple of errant throws out of the possession of BU defenders, who were credited with six pass breakups. The Bears also sacked the young QB four times on the night. While Miles stated during his postgame video press conference he wasn't "displeased" with Daniels "in any way," KU's head coach didn't commit to starting the freshman again next week, when the Jayhawks face Oklahoma State in Lawrence. Miles at least said Daniels "could" start the next game. - Lawrence Journal World

  09/27/20 - Jalon DanielsrSr/2026, Kansas, 6-0, 220 (DS#28 QB) + More +

The Jalon Daniels era at Kansas football started with a bang. It proved the only meaningful firework, however, on an evening that was otherwise a dud. Daniels, a true freshman quarterback making his first collegiate start, orchestrated a touchdown drive on the Jayhawks' first possession of Saturday's game against Baylor, but the Bears responded by scoring 40 straight points en route to a comfortable 47-14 victory at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas. Les Miles said his players were "a little sick to (their) stomach" by the outcome. "I told them that right now you're going to deal with an ugly feeling in the pit of your stomach, but you're going to have the opportunity to change that," the second-year coach said. "So I tell you, I like the team that's coming back. I like a team that will play hard until the bitter end, period."

After appearing in mop-up duty in his team's season-opening defeat to Coastal Carolina, Daniels handled the entirety of the Jayhawks' conference opener. The former three-star recruit finished 19-for-33 passing for 159 yards and rushed 14 times for 23 yards - Daniels was sacked four times. Miles praised Daniels' ability to improvise on the ground but also stressed that the 6-foot, 200-pound native of Lawndale, Calif., needs to develop into a more balanced player. - Topeka Capital Journal

  09/24/20 - Julian ChandlerrSr/2022, Kansas, 6-0, 182 (DS#999 FS) + More +

The Kansas football team lost some depth in the secondary Wednesday, as reserve safety Julian Chandler became the second member of the program to opt out of playing this year. Chandler, a 6-foot, 182-pound senior from Houston, announced his decision via Twitter, three days ahead of KU's second game of the season. "This year has been full of surprises since January 1 - from the pandemic, as well as the many racial injustice instances," Chandler wrote. "COVID-19 changed things for many of us. With deep concern for my family's health as well as mine I have decided to opt out of the 2020 season." Chandler thanked KU for the opportunity to earn his degree and head coach Les Miles and the staff "for everything" in his post. - Lawrence Journal World
