  01/07/23 - Lonnie PhelpsrJr/2023, Kansas, 6-2, 244 (DS#21 OLB) + More +

Lonnie Phelps Jr.'s stay with Kansas football won't last for more than a season, as the star defensive end announced Thursday he's declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft. Phelps joined the Jayhawks as a redshirt junior for the 2022 season, and rose quickly to become their leading pass rusher. The transfer out of Miami (Ohio) didn't lose a step as he went from the Group of Five level to the Power Five. And now he'll have the opportunity to showcase what's possible for him in a jump to the professional ranks.

Phelps finished first among Kansas players in 2022 in tackles for loss (11.5), sacks (7) and quarterback hurries (6). Despite being a defensive lineman, he also finished fourth in tackles on the team with 57. He was arguably the most impactful transfers the Jayhawks brought in ahead of this past season as they worked their way to bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008. - Topeka Capital Journal

  01/07/23 - Jason BeanrSr/2024, Kansas, 6-2, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Two words. "I'm back." Athletes have used them before. They'll continue to use them. And they're how Jason Bean chose to punctuate a video he posted on Instagram on Friday to reveal his decision to return to Kansas football for the 2023 season, which will be the quarterback's last at the college level. But more than what it means for Bean's own career, which started at North Texas in 2018 and took him to Kansas in 2021, it provides the Jayhawks with a level of quarterback depth that teams across the Big 12 will likely find enviable. Bean has extensive experience as a starter to complement what Jalon Daniels already brings to that room for Kansas. And although Bean's win-loss record as a starter might understandably give some a degree of pause, he's still played a significant role in the program's rebuild that coach Lance Leipold is leading.

The most recent memory of Bean's play for fans is the failed two-point conversion that sealed the Jayhawks' fate in their Liberty Bowl loss last month against Arkansas. But that moment doesn't define his legacy to date at Kansas. Bean will forever be the quarterback who led the Jayhawks to the win that earned them bowl eligibility for the first time in over a decade this past season. Bean stuck with Kansas even though he lost the starting job to Daniels in 2021 after suffering an injury in his ninth start in what was an arduous 2-10 season. - Topeka Capital Journal

  12/24/22 - Kenny Logan Jr.rSr/2024, Kansas, 5-11, 209 (DS#21 SS) + More +

Kansas safety Kenny Logan Jr. always figured he would leave KU after the 2022 season. But last week, after a fair amount of reflection, Logan decided to stay for one more season. He announced his decision to return to KU for his final season of college eligibility in a video on social media. On Monday, during the program's pre-Liberty Bowl media day, Logan shared what went into the decision. "I felt like it was the best thing for me, and it was a chance to come back and help this program," He said. "I saw what we did this year and I know there's a lot more we still can do." Asked specifically what he was deciding between, Logan said simply, "Here or going to the NFL." As it turns out, the NFL can wait.

Logan has been a tackling machine during the past two seasons with the Jayhawks. In 2021, he led the Big 12 in tackles, with 113 - the most by a safety in the entire NCAA - and this year, with a better supporting cast around him, Logan recorded a team-best 96 tackles and also snatched two interceptions, with four pass break-ups. Logan said he talked with his teammates, KU coach Lance Leipold and his family about the decision before making the final call. And he said Leipold's very public desire to have him back with the program next season played an important role in the final call. "That meant a lot, because me and coach's relationship was really strong," Logan said Monday. "So, to hear him say that, to hear him want to coach me one more time, was definitely exciting." - Lawrence Journal World

  12/19/22 - Kenny Logan Jr.rSr/2024, Kansas, 5-11, 209 (DS#21 SS) + More +

Kenny Logan Jr. announced Friday he will return to Kansas in 2023 for his fifth season of college football. Logan, a senior safety for the Jayhawks in 2022, had a few different options when it came to what's next after this year. The veteran talent could have turned pro, or even chosen to play his last year of eligibility with another program. But in a video he posted on Twitter he said he's staying in Lawrence. "Jayhawk nation, for four years you made a kid from North Florida feel at home," Logan said. "You packed the Booth and helped us get this thing rolling. But I came to Kansas to turn around the program, and we're just getting started. "I have one more year, and I'll be playing right here in Lawrence, Kansas. Rock Chalk."

Logan's decision adds further depth to a secondary that figures to bring back more players who'll be upperclassmen next year, like safeties Marvin Grant and O.J. Burroughs and cornerbacks Cobee Bryant and Kalon Gervin. It'll create more competition for playing time, both on defense and on special teams. Logan may not have had quite as successful a season individually in 2022 compared to 2021 in coach Lance Leipold's first year at the helm, but he is once again leading the team in tackles. He's been a part of an effort that's propelled the Jayhawks to their first bowl game since 2008. Kansas (6-6, 3-6 Big 12) also has more wins this season, overall and in conference play, than Logan's first three years in Lawrence combined. Leipold wanted Logan to come back. So did defensive coordinator Brian Borland. And both coaches are getting their wish, as preparation continues for the Liberty Bowl matchup on Dec. 28 against Arkansas (6-6, 3-5 SEC). - Topeka Capital Journal
