  09/21 WEEK 3 CUSA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Caleb Nix, Jax State - Gr. - S - Phenix City, Ala.,...Nix returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown to give Jax State (2-2) their first and only lead of the night at 31-27 with 8:16 to go in the fourth quarter after trailing 17-0.   09/07 WEEK 1 CUSA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jamill Williams, Jax State - Gr. - WR - Atlanta, Ga.,...Williams had a career night for the Gamecocks (1-1) with seven catches on as many targets for 144 yards and four touchdowns. It was tied for the second-most touchdown receptions in Conference USA history and the most since North Texas' Jaelon Darden on Dec. 11, 2020. He became the first Gamecock to have four receiving TDs in a game since Alan Bonner did so in 2012 against UT Martin when he had five for a school record. Williams' scoring plays went for 13, 55, 30 and four yards, and the first three marked the Gamecocks' first three scores. - CUSA Football

  09/07 WEEK 1 CUSA OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK: Lance Johnson, Jax State - So. - LG - Birmingham, Ala.,...Johnson, who earned CUSA All-Freshman honors in his first season last year as a tackle, made the shift inside and dazzled in his first start at guard to the tune of an 82.8 PFF pass block rating. The Jax State offensive line kept quarterback Caden Creel untouched the entire night, allowing him to record his first 300-yard passing game and throw five touchdown passes.   WEEK 0/AUG 31 CUSA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Conor Donaghy, Jax State - So. - P - Galbally, Ireland,...Donaghy averaged 46.4 yards per punt on five attempts in a season-opening loss to North Dakota State. He placed three inside the Bison 14-yard line, including two within the 10-yard line. Donaghy's long punt of 51 yards pinned North Dakota State at their own one-yard line, and his shortest punt of the night (44) was downed at the Bison 14-yard line. - CUSA Football

  Caden Creel threw a touchdown pass, Deondre Johnson had six receptions for 101 yards, and Jacksonville State beat Troy 17-13 on Tuesday night to win the Salute to Veterans Bowl. Andrew Paul's 1-yard run off a direct snap gave the Gamecocks a 17-13 lead with 5:44 remaining. With about a minute left, Tucker Kilcrease drove Troy past midfield but his Hail Mary pass-attempt to DJ Epps on the final play was knocked down in the end zone. Creel completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards that included a 22-yard touchdown pass to Brock Rechsteiner in the first quarter. Garrison Rippa added a 51-yard field goal in the third for Jacksonville State (9-5). Kilcrease was 12-of-23 passing for 116 yards and threw two interceptions for Troy (8-6), which ended a 79-game win streak when leading heading into the fourth quarter.

Late in the first quarter, Troy scored its only touchdown on the Gamecocks' botched flea flicker. Luis Medina recovered a fumble in the end zone after TJ Thompson strip-sacked Creel. Scott Taylor Renfroe kicked field goals from 38 and 30 yards in the second quarter and the Trojans led 13-7 at halftime. Troy had won the last seven games between the teams but it was the first meeting since 2001 for the schools located just 162 miles apart. The Trojans are 33-29-2 in the series that dates to 1924. Jacksonville State has played in a bowl game in each of its three seasons at the FBS level.   Garrison Rippa kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired to send Jacksonville State to the Conference USA championship game with a 37-34 win over Western Kentucky on Saturday. The Gamecocks (8-4, 7-1) will host Kennesaw State in the championship game on Friday. Caden Creel led the Gamecocks from the JSU 39 to the WKU 11 over the final 4:18 to set up the winning kick. Creel completed 12 of 19 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns and had 143 rushing yards including a score. Cam Cook added 137 yards rushing and a TD. Cook entered the game with the second-most rushing yards in the FBS with 1,444.

Cook scored the first touchdown for Jacksonville, a 14-yard rush in the first quarter. Western Kentucky (8-4, 6-2) responded with three straight scores to go up 21-7 early in the second quarter. A kick from Rippa and a 2-yard reception by Pearson Baldwin made it 21-17. Both teams scored another touchdown before halftime. Creel rushed for a 70-yard score in the third quarter to take the lead for the Gamecocks. Rodney Tisdale Jr. completed 17 of 24 passes for 180 yards for Western Kentucky.   WEEK 12 CONFERENCE USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Caleb Nix, Jacksonville State - Jr. - S - Phenix City, Ala.,...Nix becomes the first CUSA player to repeat as Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded a pair of interceptions for Jax State (7-3, 6-0 CUSA) in their 35-26 win over Kennesaw State in a battle of teams that started the day at 5-0 in Conference USA. His first came in the second quarter with the Owls threatening as Nix intercepted a pass at his own 10-yard line and returned it 26 yards. It marked the fourth consecutive game with a takeaway for the redshirt junior and third consecutive game with an interception. Additionally, he was second on the tackle chart with 11 total stops, including eight of the solo variety. - Conference USA Football

  WEEK 11 CONFERENCE USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Caleb Nix, Jax State - Jr. - S - Phenix City, Ala.,...Nix recorded his second defensive touchdown of the season, returning an interception 93 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to give Jax State (6-3, 5-0 CUSA) a 10-point lead during a 30-27 win at UTEP. It marked the second-longest pick six in program history and the first of 70 or more yards by a Gamecock since 2017. He also helped out on a tackle for loss and made five total stops on the day.   Quarterback Caden Creel and Cam Cook combined to rush for 252 yards and three touchdowns, powering Jacksonville State to a 35-26 victory over Kennesaw State on Saturday night in a Conference USA showdown. The Gamecocks (7-3, 6-0) have used a five-game win streak to move a game ahead of the field. The Owls (7-3, 5-1) fall a half-game behind second-place Western Kentucky. Amari Odom scored on a 1-yard run at the end of a 14-play drive and Kennesaw State jumped in front. Creel answered with an 18-yard touchdown run to tie it 7-all after one quarter.

Daniel Kinney's 43-yard field goal gave the Owls a 10-7 lead with 4:33 left before halftime. Cook scored on a 6-yard run less than two minutes later and Gavin Wimsatt fired a 62-yard scoring strike to Deondre Johnson with 4 seconds left on his only pass to put the Gamecocks up 22-10. Garrison Rippa stretched the lead to 15 with a 32-yard field goal midway through the third quarter and Creel scored on a 15-yard run for a 32-13 advantage with 10:30 left in the game. Backup quarterback Dexter Williams II connected with Clayton Coppock for a 10-yard touchdown before scoring on a 9-yard run at 3:22 to cut the Owls' deficit to 32-26. Jacksonville State ran all but 20 seconds off the clock before Rippa kicked a short field goal. Creel completed 8 of 13 passes for 137 yards and rushed 14 times for 127 more. Cook carried 27 times for 132 yards. Johnson totaled 112 yards on two catches. Odom and Williams combined to complete 27 of 44 passes for 362 yards.   Caden Creel and Cam Cook combined for 259 rushing yards and were involved in late scores for Jacksonville State in a 30-27 win over UTEP on Saturday. Creel's 31-yard scramble on a six-play, 46-yard drive set up Garrison Rippa's 45-yard, game-winning field goal with 53 seconds remaining. Creel had 134 rushing yards on 13 attempts, and was 15-of-31 passing for 181 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He found Deondre Johnson for a 77-yard touchdown strike on the Gamecocks' opening drive.

Cook had 127 yards on 19 carries, scoring his lone touchdown to take the lead for the Gamecocks (6-3, 5-0 Conference USA) with 10:01 left in the fourth quarter. Skyler Locklear accounted for four touchdowns for the Miners (2-7, 1-4), and one for the Gamecocks, on a 93-yard pick-six by Caleb Nix in the second quarter. Locklear was 16-of-32 passing for 244 yards and two touchdowns, with 82 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.   WEEK 8 CONFERENCE USA FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Mac Sanders, Jax State – Fr. – LB – McDonough, Ga.,...Sanders paced the Gamecocks in tackles for the second time in his career and posted his second double-digit tackle performance of his career with 10, including five solo stops. With 10:37 left in the second quarter, Sanders forced a fumble that was scooped up by Caleb Nix, who raced 45 yards to pay dirt to give Jax State a 14-0 lead.   WEEK 7 CONFERENCE USA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Garrison Rippa, Jax State - R-So. - K - Locust Grove, Ga.,...Rippa hit a career-long 52-yard field goal as time expired to give Jax State (3-3, 2-0 CUSA) a 29-27 win over Sam Houston on Thursday night. The kick also matched the program record and marked his third make of 50+ in his career. He has now converted four of the program's 13 longest field goals. The sophomore added makes of 30 and 26 yards during the contest and had three of his six kickoffs go for touchbacks.   2023 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE OFFENSIVE FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Ronnell Johnson, Stetson,...A year after Stetson quarterback Brady Meitz earned the PFL Offensive Player of the Year award, the Hatters' Johnson claims the honor. A McDonough, Georgia native, he caught 19 passes for 388 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson did not debut until Week 4 against Butler and caught a pass in his first three games.
