  08/01/22 - Colby ReederrSr/2023, Iowa State, 6-3, 237 (DS#32 OLB) + More +

Iowa State linebacker Colby Reeder is expected to play a major role on the Cyclone defense. He battled injury throughout his tenure at Delaware, but still managed to put together productive seasons. Last season, despite missing three games, he recorded 55 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an interception. The 25-year-old Reeder will be aided by the fact he'll be flanked by a couple of Iowa State veterans in Gerry Vaughn and O'Rien Vance at linebacker, and that coordinator Jon Heacock is still directing the defense. "It's a lot different than where I'm from," Reeder said a few months back during spring practice. "It's a bigger level of football. It's a whole different area of the country, but the transition's been good."

Linebacker is an focal point in Iowa State's defense, and the Cyclones can't afford a major drop-off there if they hope to make their sixth-straight bowl game. "Not to overstate it, but he's got a patience and a poise level," Heacock said of Reeder back in March during spring ball. "He's a veteran, so he doesn't get crazy about things that he doesn't know. He's smart enough to know what he doesn't know. "He's a veteran player that doesn't get too high or too low. He just continues to work and play well." - Des Moines Register

2022 PRESEASON RIMINGTON TROPHY WATCHLIST: Trevor Downing, Iowa State,...Downing, a Creston, Iowa, native, is making the move to center after earning All-Big 12 First-Team honors last season at right guard. He made his first career start at center in the Cheez-It Bowl against Clemson. Downing has made 26 career starts on the Cyclone offensive line and in 2021 was a lynchpin in helping the Cyclones record their fourth-best scoring average (31.3) and fifth-best total offensive average (424.5) in school history. - Iowa State Football

  07/23/22 - Hunter DekkersrSr/2025, Iowa State, 6-2, 210 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Xavier Hutchinson was all-smiles when I asked about Hunter Dekkers' off-season. Your eyes would light up, too, if you're on the end of 70-yard bombs. Granted, that's not happening against a defense during these hot days of summer, but that isn't the point. The point is that Dekkers' hard work since assuming the record-setting job quarterback Brock Purdy had before being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers - well, that's been pretty impressive stuff. "You should see him," Hutchinson said. "He looks like a different guy out there." Dekkers is in the best shape of his life, shedding 40-some pounds from during his freshman season after starring at West Sioux High School in Hawarden. He's more agile. He's quicker. He's no longer a quarterback in the body of a tight end, or even a linebacker.

I asked offensive coordinator Tom Manning about Dekkers' makeover. "Yeah, that's Hunter," Manning told me at the Cyclones' annual football prospect camp last month. "Looks good, doesn't he?" Indeed. No more baby day. No more "freshman fifteen," or whatever it became after leaving home for the first time. "Down to about 210 pounds," Dekkers told me at the camp. "Feels great. Best I've ever felt." "He's been great this summer," coach Matt Campbell said of Dekkers. Purdy provided several memorable one-liners during his time. This one, long after the last bowl game, resonated as much as the others. "Don't sleep on Hunter Dekkers," he told me. "Just watch." - Des Moines Register

Hutchinson had 987 receiving yards and five touchdowns last season, running his career totals to 147 receptions, 1,758 yards and nine touchdown receptions. He leads all active Big 12 receivers in career receptions (T-14th nationally) and receiving yards (18th nationally). - Iowa State Football

  07/08/22 - Will McDonald IVrSr/2023, Iowa State, 6-4, 239 (DS#5 DE) + More +

Iowa State was picked to finish sixth in the Big 12 by media representatives in a poll released on Thursday. The Cyclones enter the 2022 season coming off a shaky 2021 campaign that saw a hyped season fail to get too far off the ground. ISU finished 7-6 and lost its bowl game to Clemson. Now with numerous program mainstays off to the NFL, there's obviously lots of unknowns about Matt Campbell's squad in 2022. Released ahead of next week's Big 12 Media Days in Texas, the poll pegged Baylor to finish atop the conference. The Bears received 17 first-place votes. Also predicted to finish ahead of Iowa State was, in order: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Kansas State. - Des Moines Register

  07/07/22 - Will McDonald IVrSr/2023, Iowa State, 6-4, 239 (DS#5 DE) + More +

Several stalwarts may have graduated from program-changing roster of the last several seasons, but plenty of respect remains for Matt Campbell's Iowa State football team in 2022. The Cyclones, undergoing a reboot this offseason after key pieces such as Brock Purdy, Breece Hall, Charlie Kolar and Mike Rose departed for the pros, landed four players on the preseason All-Big 12 team that was released on Wednesday afternoon. Xavier Hutchinson (receiver), Trevor Downing (offensive lineman) and Jared Rus (fullback) all landed on the preseason first-team offense, while pass-rusher extraordinaire Will McDonald was the lone Cyclone to make the defense's first-team.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson and Kansas State defensive lineman Felix Anudike-Uzomah were named the preseason offensive and defensive players of the year. Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel was named as the preseason pick for newcomer of the year. McDonald returns in 2022 as one of the nation's most-proven sack artists. He earned first-team All-American accolades last season after tying for the Big 12 lead in sacks (11.5). His 29 sacks are the most in ISU history and the fourth-most ever in the Big 12. - Des Moines Register

Iowa State defensive end Will McDonald was wise not to declare for the 2022 NFL Draft, which was very top heavy with elite edge rushing prospects. McDonald is poised to become a household name after breaking Iowa State's single-season sack record twice over. The 6-foot-4, 245 pound pass rusher has a body built for the NFL and the athleticism and skills to match. Among edge defenders not named Will Anderson, he may have the best potential to be a top-10 pick when all is said and done. - IowaStateDaily.com

  05/19/22 - Dimitri StanleyrSr/2024, Iowa State, 5-11, 188 (DS#125 WR) + More +

Former University of Colorado wide receiver Dimitri Stanley officially signed with Iowa State football on Wednesday. Stanley entered the transfer portal on January 21 and shared in March that he would join the Cyclones, but wasn't signed to the program until May. When he announced his decision in January, he became the 21st player from Colorado to enter the transfer portal since last September. The Colorado native dealt with a lower body injury during the 2021 season but led the Buffaloes in receiving yards during the shortened 2020 season.

He started eight games in his redshirt freshman season and was on the watch list for Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. A three-star recruit and the No. 3 prospect in Colorado coming out of high school, Iowa State was one of a dozen schools that originally offered Stanley. The Cyclones were one of the first four teams that showed serious interest in Stanley, offering him the same day as Colorado in 2017. Stanley will be a redshirt senior in 2022 with two years of eligibility remaining but will need to compete with Xavier Hutchinson for playing time. - Des Moines Register

  05/08/22 - Hunter DekkersrSr/2025, Iowa State, 6-2, 210 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Sophomore Hunter Dekkers is in line to take over for Brock Purdy, the winningest QB in school history who set 32 school records while starting the last 46 games. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Dekkers spent the last two seasons as Purdy's backup. Dekkers played in four games in 2021, completing 20 of 36 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 61 yards and two touchdowns on four carries. Dekkers is a former four-star recruit out of Hawarden, Iowa, where he broke Iowa high school career records with 10,628 yards and 126 touchdowns passing. - AP College Football

  05/06/22 - Will McDonald IVrSr/2023, Iowa State, 6-4, 239 (DS#5 DE) + More +

Next year could be another standout year for the Cyclones in the draft. Let's take a look. Defensive end Wil McDonald IV, an All-American who led the Big 12 in sacks the past two seasons. He'll get plenty of attention from the NFL scouting community this fall. Receiver Xavier Hutchinson, a two-time All-Big 12 pick who, like McDonald, could have opted for the draft after last season. Interior offensive lineman Trevor Downing, another All-Big 12 pick who has starting experience at both guard and center. Interior versatility is a major plus. Defensive back Anthony Johnson, switching from corner to safety, a four-year starter with 42 career starts. - Ames Tribune

  05/05/22 - Jirehl BrockrSr/2024, Iowa State, 5-11, 220 (DS#999 RB) + More +

By now, you're wondering if running backs playing for Matt Campbell have a free-flowing pipeline to the NFL. Let's put it this way: Breece Hall going to the New York Jets in the second round makes it five since 2014 - two at Toledo, and three since becoming Iowa State's coach in 2016. David Fluellen and Kareem Hunt at Toledo. David Montgomery, Kene Nwangwu and Hall at Iowa State. All feature backs under Campbell. That's an impressive group.

It's something to sell when Campbell and his staff hit the recruiting trail, and so is this: Jirehl Brock has NFL ability too. "He'll show you," Hall told me after last season when asked about his running back heir. "Jirehl is good. He just needs the ball. He'll do great. He's been waiting for this opportunity." That's finally happening. The carries that went to Hall and others now will be Brock's. "Me being behind Breece and being able to watch what he was able to do helped me get ready for this point," Brock said this spring. It's Brock's time, and if getting to the NFL is a goal - he's certainly in the right place and definitely at the right time. With Campbell's draft history with running backs, the NFL would be well-served to keep eyes on the Cyclones. - Des Moines Register
