  12/08/20 - *Breece HallJr/2022, Iowa State, 5-11, 218 (DS#1 RB) + More +

2020 MAXWELL AWARD SEMIFINALIST: RB Breece Hall, Iowa State,...A native of Wichita, Kan., Hall has made a swift rise to one of the nation's elite running backs in 2020 by leading the nation in rushing yards (1,357), 100-yard rushing games (8) and multi-TD rush games (6), first down rushes (66), yards after contact (797), consecutive games with a rush TD (10) and 20+ yard rushes (14). With 90+ rushing yards and at least one rush TD in all 10 games season, Hall has been the most consistent running back in the nation.

He's averaged at least 4.3 yards per carry in every game and is one of only four FBS players since 1996 to have 100+ rushing yards and 1+ TD in the first eight games to begin a season. Hall's versatility is what makes him stand out above the rest. He's among the nation's leaders in rushing TDs (17- 2nd nationally), overall TDs (19- 2nd nationally) and scoring (114- 2nd nationally). Hall is averaging 135.7 yards per game, second in the nation among teams playing five games, and 6.11 yards per carry. He's caught 18 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns and averaging 150.1 yards from scrimmage. - Iowa State Football

2020 DAVEY O'BRIEN AWARD SEMIFINALIST: Brock Purdy, Iowa State, Jr.,...Purdy has continued his assault on the Iowa State record book in his third season as the Cyclone signal-caller, owning or sharing 25 school records in his career (game, season, career). Purdy is the winningest quarterback in school history with 22 overall wins and 19 victories vs. conference opponents. He has an all-time record of 12-1 vs. Big 12 foes in Jack Trice Stadium. The Gilbert, Ariz., native had another fantastic season directing the Cyclone offense to one its most prolific campaigns in school history. Purdy's 66.2 percent completion rate is the third-best season total in school history.

Purdy ranks third in the Big 12 in passing efficiency (145.6), the fourth-best total in school history, and his 17 touchdown passes is third-best in the Big 12. He's tossed a TD pass in nine-straight games, tying for the fourth-best streak in school history.   Brock Purdy threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 12 Iowa State dominated on defense in a 42-6 rout of West Virginia on Saturday to secure its first appearance in the Big 12 championship game. The Cyclones (8-2, 8-1, No. 9 CFP) were assured a spot in the conference title game Dec. 19 when TCU finished its win over Oklahoma State about the same time as kickoff against the Mountaineers (5-4, 4-4).

Iowa State scored touchdowns on its first three possessions and finished with 483 total yards against the Big 12's top defense while holding West Virginia to 263. Purdy completed 20 of 23 passes and Breece Hall ran 22 times for 97 yards and caught three passes for 56 yards and a TD. West Virginia didn't score until Tyler Sumpter made a 32-yard field goal with 12 minutes left. Reaching the championship game marks another milestone for fifth-year coach Matt Campbell, who took over a program that has not won a football conference title since it was the 1912 co-champion with Nebraska in the old Missouri Valley Conference. - Iowa State/AP College Football

Breece Hall scored on a 3-yard run with 1:25 remaining, and No. 15 Iowa State held off last-minute drive by Sam Ehlinger and No. 20 Texas to remain in first place in the Big 12 with a 23-20 victory Friday. After Iowa State sacked Ehlinger on third down, Texas’ Cameron Dicker barely missed left with a 58-yard field goal attempt as time expired. The Cyclones (7-2, 7-1) have almost locked up a spot in the Big 12 championship game for the first time. Hall gained 91 yards on 20 carries, his first game under 100 this season, but had 30 on the final 69-yard touchdown drive. Quarterback Brock Purdy connected with tight ends Charlie Kolar and Dylan Soehner for the other 39 yards. Iowa State trailed 20-16 early in the fourth quarter after bad two-play sequence for Texas (5-3, 4-3) helped the Cyclones get a field goal by Connor Assalley. Purdy completed 25 of 36 for 312 yards and one touchdown. Kolar made six receptions for 131. - AP College Football

  11/24/20 - Mike RoseSr/2022, Iowa State, 6-4, 243 (DS#16 OLB) + More +

Seven tackles. A sack. Three tackles for loss. A quarterback hurry, and oh by the way, his fourth interception during this wonderful season. It doesn't get much better than that. I've been bullish about Michael, really, from the TCU game on," coach Matt Campbell said Saturday night. "I just believe that Michael is one of the best defensive players that I've had the opportunity to coach. The consistency that he has played with - I don't know that there's someone that's playing as well as what he has consistently played for the entirety of the year. I'm obviously not sitting there watching everybody play college football, but I sure know what he's meant to this program and to this team. He's as special as I've ever been around, and maybe as special as I've seen."

Rose led a defense that pitched its first shutout since 45-0 against Kansas in 2017. He was all over the field with an A.J. Klein-like performance. He leads the Big 12 in interceptions. He's among the leaders in tackles, but there's more. He spoiled the Wildcats' first drive of the second half, with a speedy quarterback chase down on third down. Which play in particular caught Campbell's eye? All of them, but it goes beyond that. "That's what I love about Mike," Campbell said after the game. "You're going to go back and watch the tape, and I don't know there's a play that sticks out in a negative way. He had an interception. He makes plays on the jet sweep. "To me, it's the consistency that he's playing with. I don't know if there's anybody else that's played as consistently as he has from the start of the season to where he is right now. "That takes a really special human, and that takes a really special sacrifice. I don't know if anybody's worked harder. I don't know if anybody has reached his full potential more than what I've seen from Michael." - Des Moines Register

Brock Purdy passed for 236 yards and three touchdowns and No. 17 Iowa State beat Kansas State 45-0 on Saturday for its most lopsided win over the Wildcats in 77 years. Iowa State (6-2) improved to 6-1 in the Big 12, matching the school record for conference wins. The Cyclones hadn't had such a wide winning margin against the Wildcats since they beat them 48-0 in 1943. It was their biggest win over a Big 12 opponent since beating Kansas 45-0 three years ago. Kansas State (4-4, 4-3), which won 11 of the previous 12 meetings, started to unravel after failing to score on an early first-and-goal from the 3.

Purdy completed 10 of his first 12 passes for 156 yards to six receivers and all three of his touchdowns. Breece Hall was Iowa State's leading rusher with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Hall ran for touchdowns of 33 and 21 yards as the Cyclones pushed the lead to 35-0 before half. Kansas State sputtered with quarterback Will Howard, who completed just three of his first 9 attempts and was replaced after throwing an interception late in the second quarter. Purdy, who finished 16 for 20, also ran seven times for 59 yards. Iowa State outgained the Wildcats 539-149. The Wildcats were missing starting linebackers Justin Hughes and Elijah Sullivan for undisclosed reasons. - Iowa State/AP College Football

The conversation about Breece Hall's status as a Heisman contender is probably over - he is one. He may not be the favorite, but after rushing for two touchdowns and 133 yards, which put him over 1,000 for the season, while also catching two passes for 27 yards and a touchdown, he should be included in just about every discussion of what players might be invited (virtually) as finalists to New York City next month.

The sophomore, who entered the game leading the country in per-game rushing yards not only has fantastic numbers on the season, but he's been doing it in consistent fashion. He's rushed for over 100 yards in every game this season. That's what makes his trajectory for the final three regular-season games easier to predict - all he does is put up numbers. Hall seems likely to continue on that path, but to get that finalist invite, Iowa State will probably need to stay on the path it hopes to walk - which leads to Arlington and the Big 12 title game. - Des Moines Register

  11/07/20 - Brock PurdySr/2022, Iowa State, 6-1, 212 (DS#11 QB) + More +

Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes in the second half after throwing three interceptions in the first, and No. 17 Iowa State came from behind to beat Baylor 38-31 Saturday night. The Cyclones (5-2) are 5-1 in conference play for the first time in the program's 128-year history and are first in the Big 12 by a half-game. Breece Hall went over 100 yards rushing for the seventh straight game, finishing with 133 and two touchdowns. He also caught a TD pass. The Cyclones won for the first time since 2012 when committing four turnovers. Baylor scored its first 24 points off Iowa State turnovers, the last coming when Greg Eisworth muffed a punt. Iowa State linebacker Mike Rose sealed the victory when he intercepted Charlie Brewer's pass in the end zone with 57 seconds left. Purdy was intercepted on Iowa State's first two possessions, and Baylor (1-4, 1-4 Big 12) turned them into points. Jalen Pitre's 30-yard interception return put the Bears ahead 21-7. - AP College Football

When Iowa State running back Breece Hall discusses his role, he first mentions his blocking in pass protection, being a dependable check-down receiver and communicating with teammates. Everybody else wants to talk about what he does as a ball carrier. Hall is averaging 150.2 yards per game and will go into the 17th-ranked Cyclones' home game against Baylor on Saturday night as the nation's leading rusher among players who have appeared in a minimum of three games. The sophomore from Wichita, Kansas, has gone over 100 yards in all six games, his four runs of at least 50 yards are most in the country and his 11 rushing touchdowns rank second.

"I wouldn't say it's a surprise," Hall said recently. "But I've been happy with some of the results and how our team has been playing a little bit." The Cyclones (4-2, 4-1) are in a three-way tie for first in the Big 12 and looking to reach the conference championship game for the first time. Hall emerged at midseason as a freshman last year and has gone for 100 yards in 10 of his 14 starts. "Do I think Breece is an elite football player? I do. Do I think he can continue to grow and get better? I do," coach Matt Campbell said. "There's nobody else I'd rather play with than Breece." - Fresno Bee

  11/03/20 - *Breece HallJr/2022, Iowa State, 5-11, 218 (DS#1 RB) + More +

It took until the postgame Zoom conference before Breece Hall was stopped cold. He was without an answer when asked if he knew who was Iowa State's last football player with 100-plus rushing yards in six consecutive games. When told it was Darren Davis, of the famous Davis family, in 1999, he shook his head, then proceeded into a dissertation about why he's rushed for 185 yards on consecutive Saturdays. "It's a testament not only for me but the offense," he said after the No. 22 Cyclones overwhelmed winless Kansas 52-22 Saturday. "Everybody's doing a good job blocking. It's really a team achievement, not an individual thing. Running the ball - we've been successful these last two games. It's been fun." Hall enters next Saturday's game against Baylor at Jack Trice Stadium with 801 rushing yards on 137 carries. He entered Saturday's game as the nation's top rusher and he topped the Big 12, and you know what? He's not performing at his best.

That's the word from Matt Campbell, who won't be totally satisfied until his Cyclones not just play in the Big 12 Conference title game but wins the Big 12 title game. "He's running the ball outstanding," Campbell said after Saturday's 30-point win. "Last week, there were some other things, as well as he ran the ball, that I really challenged him to be better in, and he did a really good job working on those things." Hall isn't the best player to carry an Iowa State football. No one will do what Troy Davis did, although his brother, Darren, gave it a darn good shot. That's just an observation, of course. "The statistics are one thing," Campbell said. "I want our guys to become the best version of themselves as they can be. Breece still has that in there. As great as a player he is, there's still more out there. There's still another level. "I look forward watching for that to continue to grow and develop. The expectations continue to grow, and my expectations are really high." - Ames Tribune

Breece Hall matched a career high with 185 yards rushing and two touchdowns, Brock Purdy threw two TD passes and had another score on the ground and No. 23 Iowa State coasted to a 52-22 victory over winless Kansas on Saturday. Purdy finished with 239 yards passing and Kene Nwangwu also hit the end zone for the Cyclones (4-2, 4-1 Big 12), who bounced back from a tough loss to No. 6 Oklahoma State by beating the Jayhawks for the sixth straight time. The only bright spot for Kansas (0-6, 0-5) came on a 100-yard kickoff return by Kenny Logan in the second half.

Otherwise, quarterback Jalon Daniels and the rest of the offense was woefully inept, the defense gave up gobs of yards on the ground and the special teams missed a short field goal and nearly surrendered a kick-return touchdown. Daniels was just 16 of 29 for 165 yards with an interception and a touchdown run. The first three TDs of the game were scored into a brisk wind out of the south, but the Cyclones finally took control going the other way at the end of the first half. They converted four consecutive third downs, three of them through the air, and the last a short touchdown toss from Purdy to Charlie Kolar that made it 20-7 at the break. Hall already had 89 yards rushing by that point. Kansas had just 15 yards rushing as a team. - Iowa State/AP College Football
