Zach Calzada threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start to power No. 7 Texas A&M in a 34-0 rout of New Mexico on Saturday. The victory extends A&M's winning streak to 11 games and gives the Aggies a 3-0 start for the first time since opening the 2016 season with six consecutive wins. Calzada was thrust into the job last weekend against Colorado when Haynes King was injured on A&M's second possession. King had surgery this week to repair a broken right leg, leaving Calzada to run the offense.

Calzada looked more comfortable, and the Aggies moved the ball much better Saturday than they did last week while scoring just 10 points in a win over the Buffaloes. They eclipsed their total points from that game in the first six minutes of this one and built a 24-point lead by halftime. Terry Wilson, a transfer from Kentucky who had 559 yards passing in the first two games, threw for just 33 yards Saturday for New Mexico (2-1) while being hurried and harassed all day. He had an interception, was sacked four times and had three passes broken up by A&M's stingy defense. Texas A&M extended the lead to 21-0 when Isaiah Spiller shed three defenders on a 5-yard scoring run with about six minutes left in the second quarter. Spiller had 117 yards rushing to bounce back after running for just 20 yards last week. - Texas A&M Football/AP College Football

Freshman quarterback Haynes King's backup started out slowly, finished precious few drives and even fumbled the football a whisker from the goal line. Sophomore Zach Calzada came up clutch in the end, though, throwing an 18-yard touchdown pass to running back Isaiah Spiller with 2:41 remaining to help fifth-ranked Texas A&M edge Colorado 10-7 Saturday. "The one thing you can say he made the plays on those drives that mattered, right there at the end," Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher said. And Fisher didn't want to hear about how his Aggies should have walloped the Buffaloes, either. "First and foremost, Colorado played a heck of a football game. We got a very good football team," Fisher said. "They were a lot of the reason why we had issues today. We can sit here and say we blame it on ourselves, but they did a really, really good job, physically and schematically. "We were fortunate to come out of that one." Unbeaten if not unscathed.

Spiller's TD gave the Aggies (2-0) their first lead on a day in which they lost their star freshman starting quarterback to a lower right leg injury and eight of their first nine drives were three-and-outs. Colorado's hopes of an upset over the 17-point favorite Aggies ended when Brendon Lewis' pass to Dimitri Stanley on fourth-and-13 from his 22 covered just 12 yards before he was smothered by a bevy of defenders. "It gives us an identity," Spiller said of the hard-fought victory. "It was our first adversity game, it was a great challenge for us." Maybe it'll give the Buffs an identity, too. - Texas A&M/AP College Football

Devan Barrett hit the transfer portal earlier this summer, but the former Auburn running back/defensive back won't be going too far away for the remainder of his college career. Barrett on Friday morning announced he will be transferring to Troy to play defensive back. He should have two years of eligibility remaining, thanks to the NCAA's free year of eligibility due to the pandemic. At Troy, Barrett will reunite with Chip Lindsey, who served as Auburn's offensive coordinator during Barrett's first two seasons on the Plains and is currently the Trojans' head coach, as well as Troy assistant Al Pogue. Pogue spent last season on Auburn's staff coaching outside linebackers and Bucks and is now Troy's cornerbacks coach.

A former four-star running back, Barrett signed with Auburn in 2017 as the nation's No. 11 player at the position. He had 14 carries for 79 yards while also catching 10 passes for 33 yards and a touchdown as a true freshman, but the following spring he split time between running back and wide receiver, and by fall camp entering his sophomore season, he made the switch to the defensive side of the ball. - Birmingham News

It appears Auburn's running back room is about to lose a player. According to On3.com's Matt Zenitz, Auburn senior running back Devan Barrett has entered the transfer portal. Barrett's exit would leave the Tigers with four scholarship running backs just over two months before the season opener against Akron on Sept. 4. Auburn's backfield would now consist of sophomore Tank Bigsby, senior Shaun Shivers, redshirt freshman Jordon Ingram and true freshman Jarquez Hunter in the backfield. Hunter signed with Auburn as a three-star recruit in February, and Ingram joined the Tigers after the Mobile native started his career at Central Michigan.

Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin spoke highly of rising senior Shaun Shivers and the work ethic he brings to the running back room. Barrett stands as the eighth Auburn player to enter the transfer portal since the spring, joining defensive end Jaren Handy, defensive lineman Jay Hardy, safety Chris Thompson Jr., cornerback Kamal Hadden, cornerback Marco Domio, offensive tackle Prince Sammons and wide receiver Hal Presley. - Opelika-Auburn News

What's old is new again in Auburn's running backs room this spring. After an offseason shakeup that saw both D.J. Williams and Mark-Antony Richards transfer to Florida State and UCF, respectively, the Tigers' backfield has a new look to it, and the team is hoping to find some depth relief in the form of a former running back turned defensive back who is back to his natural position - senior Devan Barrett. "He's got the body type; I do like his attitude as a person and just who he is," Auburn coach Bryan Harsin said. "He can go play physical and play tough, and that position, that requires it. You've got to be a different guy to play tailback, and you've got to be someone who's physical."

Barrett is a former four-star prospect who originally signed with Auburn in 2017 as a running back, but it has been a while since the 6-foot, 195-pounder had seen actual reps at the position. After cracking the backfield rotation as a freshman in 2017, when he had 14 carries for 79 yards and 10 receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown, Barrett moved to cornerback the following fall (after splitting some time at receiver in the spring of 2018 as well). He worked mostly on special teams after his switch to cornerback, notably recovering a blocked punt for a touchdown against Alabama State in 2018, and then opted out during the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. - Birmingham News

Barrett has already been one of the biggest winners of the offseason, and now he has an opportunity to really carve out a role for himself in the Tigers' backfield. The former four-star prospect began his Auburn career at running back but spent much of the last three seasons at defensive back while playing sparingly. He opted out late last season before deciding to return to the team this offseason, and he made the switch back to the offensive side to help bolster Auburn's dwindling depth at running back. Barrett is one of just three running backs on scholarship for Auburn this spring, along with Tank Bigsby and Shaun Shivers. He won't be supplanting Bigsby, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Year, atop the depth chart, but his versatility gives him a chance to vie for touches behind the Tigers' bell-cow back. - Birmingham News

Auburn is turning to a familiar face to provide needed depth to its running back room. Devan Barrett, who began his career as a running back before eventually moving to defense and ultimately opting out late last season, has returned to the team and will return to his old position, Auburn coach Bryan Harsin confirmed Wednesday. Barrett is the third Tigers player to rejoin the team after opting out at some point last fall. "He's a guy that is coming back into the program, a guy that, in high school, played running back," Harsin said. "He played running back here. He will be back, and he will be in that role." - Birmingham News

Baylor reserve redshirt freshman tight end Logan Compton announced Tuesday that he is entering the transfer portal. After sitting out the 2019 season, Compton rejoined the Bears this summer after a Falls County grand jury cleared him of wrongdoing after hearing new evidence that road conditions - more than his excessive speed - played a major role in causing the June 2019 fatal crash that killed a mother of six. The grand jury no-billed Compton three weeks after Falls County District Attorney Jody Gilliam dismissed a manslaughter indictment against him after discovering new evidence of the dangerous road conditions at the spot of that accident and two other fatal crashes since 2016. - Waco Tribune Herald
