Zach Calzada's toughness is one of the lasting impressions he left on Fisher and his Texas A&M teammates before entering the transfer portal in the offseason. Calzada, who started 10 games for the Aggies last fall, transferred to Auburn in the spring and is firmly in the mix for the Tigers' starting quarterback job as fall camp approaches. That toughness he displayed at Kyle Field last November also left an impression on his competitors-turned-teammates at Auburn. "You want to play with somebody that got that dog in him," Auburn running back Tank Bigsby said. "He didn't back down, he didn't give up, he didn't quit. I'd rather play with somebody that doesn't want to quit all the time." Calzada and offensive lineman Layden Robinson shared the Texas A&M team award for toughness at the end of last season, both of them being honored with that accolade during the team's annual December banquet.

Robinson was part of the same signing class as Calzada and has long respected him as both a quarterback on the field and a person off it. He admitted that it was tough to see Calzada transfer to Auburn, but he spoke fondly of the player the Tigers are getting. "Zach is going to be amazing for the Auburn Tigers; it's just going to make it even tougher when we play them," Robinson said. "…Zach has earned a lot of our guys' respect, and that's never going to change, because we know what type of guy Zach Calzada is, and we know what he brings to the table." - Birmingham News

Auburn's four-man quarterback battle is still as open as ever two weeks away from the beginning of fall camp, but some small updates were provided at SEC Media Days Thursday. Bryan Harsin offered a general timeline for when he'd name his starter, saying that decision will have to be made as the Tigers begin prep for their Week 1 game against Mercer on Sept. 3. "I usually say it's about 10 days out is kind of where it's happened," Harsin said. "But we'll name a starter when it's right. There'll be a time in camp where everybody knows, and then it's just a matter of how we want to roll it out."

Texas A&M transfer Zach Calzada, TJ Finley, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford and true freshman Holden Geriner are set to duke it out in Auburn's battle for the QB1 spot. All have all gotten opportunities to compete, Harsin said, and regardless of order, the quartet is likely to make up the Tigers' quarterback depth chart. Calzada, who transferred to Auburn in January, was sidelined during spring practices and not a full go until late May. In two years at A&M, he threw for 2,318 yards and 19 touchdowns with a 56% completion percentage. He played in 15 games and made 10 starts in 2021, making him the Tigers' most experienced quarterback. - Opelika-Auburn News

Zach Calzada, the Texas A&M transfer who joined the program in the spring, will be "full-go" for summer workouts after being limited in the spring due to an injury to his non-throwing shoulder, head coach Bryan Harsin said Monday in Alexander City. Calzada is one of two candidates for the starting job - along with T.J. Finley - who has prior starting experience in the SEC. Auburn QB competition takes center stage at A-Day "He's good," Harsin said. "...He's really been pushing himself and studying and preparing, so now it's just a matter of letting him get out there this summer. There's going to be no contact, there's no helmets, no pads, anything like that, so he's going to get all the reps he needs in the summertime." Calzada's introduction, without limitations, will inject some more intrigue into the race for QB1 this offseason.

He spent most of the spring as the fourth quarterback in rotation for drills, behind Finley, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford and true freshman Holden Geriner. During the Tigers' 10th practice of spring, Calzada was seen receiving some reps with the first-team offensive line and running back Tank Bigsby, though those came during the final period of the day and limited to handoffs near the goal line. Calzada was also held out of Auburn's A-Day spring game, as Finley received the majority of the first-team reps, Ashford worked with the second team and Geriner engineered a late scoring drive in the fourth quarter. - Birmingham News
