2022 WALTER PAYTON AWARD WINNER: When people say "numbers never lie," they might be referencing UIW quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr., who this season posted some of the biggest passing statistics in FCS history. Scott helped UIW reach the national semifinals for the first time. Although his team fell one win shy of playing in the national championship game, the redshirt senior made the trip to Frisco, Texas, where Saturday night he received the 2022 Stats Perform Walter Payton Award, which honors the offensive player of the year in college football's Division I subdivision. Fordham fifth-year senior quarterback Tim DeMorat, who slightly outgained Scott for the FCS high in passing yards, finished second in the voting, while Monmouth sophomore running back Jaden Shirden, the national rushing leader, was third.

A 54-member panel selected the 36th annual award, which is named for legendary running back Walter Payton, who starred at Jackson State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Scott, 24, from Zachary, Louisiana, and a graduate transfer from Nicholls, was named the Southland Conference player of the year, helping coach G.J. Kinne's Cardinals to a 12-2 season. The 5-foot-11, 212-pounder completed 322 of 454 pass attempts (70.9 percent) for 4,686 yards and an FCS-record 60 touchdowns with just eight interceptions, posting an FCS-high 197.7 passing efficiency. He rushed for 712 yards and 11 touchdowns, lifting his total TDs (pass and run) to 71, also a single-season record. Among his many marks, Scott became the third player in FCS history to pass for seven touchdowns in one half of a game against Lamar, then did it a second time against Houston Christian. - STATS FCS Football

Lindsey Scott Jr. threw four touchdown passes to break a Football Championship Subdivision record and ran for two scores as seventh-seeded Incarnate Word rallied last to beat second-seeded Sacramento State 66-63 in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs on Friday night. It was the highest scoring FCS playoff game in history and Scott, who set a FCS record with his 59th touchdown pass of the season, was the difference as the Cardinals (12-1) handed the Hornets (12-1) their first loss. Incarnate Word will take a nine-game win streak on its road trip to play No. 3 seed North Dakota State in the semifinals next weekend.

Scott, in his seventh season of college football with five different teams, surpassed the 57 touchdowns that Jeremiah Briscoe threw for Sam Houston State in 2016. Scott has at least one more game to catch NCAA all-time leader Bailey Zappe of Western Kentucky who threw 62 in 2021. LSU's Joe Burrow had 60 TD passes in 2019. Scott scored on a 64-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter and UIW upped its lead to 45-34. Sac State used a trick play - running back Cameron Skattebo’s 19-yard touchdown toss to Marshel Martin - to pull within four points with 12:08 left to play. Sac State recovered an onside kick, Jake Dunniway connected with Martin for a 14-yard touchdown on third-and-10 and the Hornets grabbed a 48-45 lead with 10:12 remaining. - Incarnate Word/AP College Football

Lindsey Scott's fifth touchdown pass of the game for freshman Kole Wilson's first scoring reception of his Incarnate Word career lifted the seventh-seeded Cardinals to a 41-38 victory over Furman on Saturday in the second round of the FCS playoffs. The Cardinals (11-1) will take on the winner of the Richmond-Sacramento State in the their first quarterfinals appearance. The winning score came with just under two minutes to go after the Cardinals had blown a 14-point third-quarter lead. Furman's final drive ended with Elliott Davison's interception at the Incarnate Word 9-yard line. After the Cardinals rolled up 438 yards offense and a 28-17 first-half lead behind four touchdown passes by Scott, three to Darion Chafin, Furman (10-3) rallied behind Tyler Huff. Chafin had three of those TD catches and 149 yards receiving. Cally Chizik picked off Scott and returned it for a touchdown - his second pick-6 this season - two minutes into the game. But Scott came right back to throw a 21-yard TD pass to Chafin as the quarterback was falling backward. He found Chafin again deep on a post route for an 80-yard score. Chizik's returned his second interception of the game 33 yards to the Cardinals 5-yard line and Dominic Roberto went in from a yard out for a 17-14 first-quarter Furman lead. The Cardinals came back with two more Scott TD passes, a 27-yarder to Chafin, and a 42-yarder that deflected off a defender before Taylor Grimes controlled for a 28-17 halftime lead.
