  OCT 10 NEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Victor Dawson, Merrimack, Running Back, R-Fr., 6-0, 225, Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban, Week 6 Stats: 124 rush yards, 22 rushes, 5.6 ypc, 2 TD rushes,...Dawson, a redshirt-freshman, scored two timely touchdowns in a Merrimack come-from-behind win at Duquesne to earn NEC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. The running back rushed 22 times for season-high 124 yards, including a season-best carry of 28 yards. A native of Akron, OH, Dawson's first touchdown, a nine-yard run, helped tie up the game before halftime at 14-14. In the third quarter, he tacked on an insurance score for the Warriors on the first play of Merrimack's seventh drive after running it in from 18 yards.   OCT 9 MISSOURI VALLEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE: QB Zack Annexstad, Illinois State - Annexstad had his best game as a Redbird in ISU's big 23-21 road win over UNI Saturday night. Annexstad completed 29 passes for a career-best 257 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 24 yards on the ground on six attempts. He got the Redbirds off to a good start, finding tight end Bryson Deming for a 3-yard touchdown on the team's opening drive of the game. Annexstad was also cool under pressure all game, helping the Redbirds convert 13-of-20 third-down conversions and 2-of-2 on fourth down, one of which he picked up on a sneak. - Missouri Valley Football

(Sierra Vista, Ariz./O'Fallon HS),...Wagner returned from injury quicker than most expected and made the most of his opportunity against UNI, connecting on three field goals including the would-be game winner against the Panthers. Wagner, who missed the first four games of the season due to injury, competed in his first game as a Redbird and connected on 3-of-4 field goal attempts. He connected from 33 yards in the first quarter to put the Redbirds back in the lead and extended the advantage to six points as time expired in the first half on a 25-yard make.   OCT 3 MISSOURI VALLEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LB Zeke Vandenburgh, Illinois State, 6-3, 235, Sr. (Freeport, Ill./Freeport HS),...Linebacker Zeke Vandenburgh was all over the field against Southern Illinois on Saturday night. The senior captain tied his career high with 14 tackles against the Salukis and finished the game with a sack and 3.5 TFLs. The double-digit tackle effort was his third in four games for the Redbirds and he extended his streak of games with three or more TFLs to three games straight.   SEPT 12 MISSOURI VALLEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE: QB Zack Annexstad, Illinois State - Annexstad led the Redbirds to a 28-21 victory over Valparaiso in the home opener for the Redbirds on Saturday night. The former Golden Gopher accounted for three touchdowns and passed for 196 yards in the victory for ISU. He completed nearly 64 percent of his passes against the Beacons, and completed passes to nine different receivers. Annexstad had touchdown passes of 35 yards to Nigel White and 23 yards to Bryson Deming and also ran one in from eight yards out to lead the Redbirds to victory. - Missouri Valley Football

(Freeport HS),...Linebacker Zeke Vandenburgh once again disrupted the game for the Redbird defense, which was dominant in a 35-7 win over rival Eastern Illinois on Saturday night. Vandenburgh's final line was extremely balanced, as he led the team with eight tackles, added a sack, three TFLs, recovered a fumble, had a pass breakup that led to an interception for a touchdown and was credited with two quarterback hurries. After the Beacons took a 14-7 after recovering a muffed punt in the endzone early in the second quarter, Carr took the ensuing kickoff 98 yards to the house for a touchdown to knot the game at 14-14 just seconds later. Carr's kickoff return for a touchdown was the first for the Redbirds since 2017, when Christian Uphoff returned one 100 yards for a score at South Dakota State. - Missouri Valley Football

For the second week in a row, Annexstad accounted for three touchdowns for the Redbirds as he threw a pair of touchdown passes and rushed for another in the victory over the Panthers. Annexstad had touchdown throws of 17 and 30 yards and called his own number on a 2-yard TD run for the final score of the game.   Victor Dawson ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Merrimack held off Duquesne 28-21 on Saturday. Dawson scored on 9-and 18-yard runs as the Warriors (4-2, 2-0 Northeast Conference) scored 21 straight points to take a 28-14 lead late in the third quarter. The Dukes (1-5, 0-2) quickly answered with a 48-yard deep strike from Darius Perrantes down the left sideline to Abdul Janneh in the final minute of the quarter.

Merrimack fumbled the ball inside the Duquesne 5-yard line and the Dukes pinned the Warriors at their one. However, Merrimack put together a 12-play drive, chewing up 6:33, before punting the ball to the Dukes' 15. Duquesne reached its own 41-yard line with a pair of first downs before four straight incompletions. Gavin McCusker threw for a touchdown to Hayden Fisher and Donvan Wadley ran for his first career score for Merrimack. Tyvon Edmonds Jr. ran for 99 yards as the Warriors piled up 256 of their 419 total yards on the ground.   Zack Annexstad passed for 257 yards and a touchdown, Ian Wagner kicked three field goals and Illinois State beat Northern Iowa 23-21 Saturday. Annexstad's 3-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Deming capped a 13-play, 79-yard drive and gave the Red Birds a 7-0 lead with 8:39 left in the first quarter. Sergio Morancy answered with a 53-yard touchdown catch-and-run less than 3 minutes later but Wagner's first field goal, a 33-yarder with 2:18 left in the first quarter, gave Illinois State the lead for good. Wenkers Wright scored on a 3-yard run to finish a 13-play, 68-yard drive that took nearly-7 minutes off the clock and made it 17-7 midway through the second quarter and Wagner made a 25-yard field goal to make it 20-14 as time in the first half expired. Illinois State (3-2, 1-1 Missouri Valley Conference) took more than 5 minutes off the clock before settling for a 41-yarder by Wagner that made it a 9-point game after the first possession of the second half.   Mason Kaplan threw for two touchdowns, ran for another and Valparaiso rallied to beat San Diego 28-21 on Saturday in a Pioneer Football League opener. Kaplan threw a 2-yard TD pass to Barret Labus to give the Beacons (2-2, 1-0) their first lead at 20-14 in the third quarter and connected with Solomon Davis on a 44-yarder to extend the lead early in the fourth. The Toreros recovered a fumble and scored on a 21-yard pass from Judd Erickson to Ja'seem Reed with under two minutes left but couldn't recover an onside kick. USD (1-3, 0-1) scored the game's first two touchdowns before Valparaiso rallied to cut the Toreros' lead to 14-13 at halftime. Kaplan - who shared quarterback duties with Michael Appel Jr. - entered the game in the second quarter and was 4-of-6 passing for 102 yards and added 44 yards on the ground. Illinois State (2-1) has won back-to-back contests following a season-opening defeat at Wisconsin. Jeff Bowens intercepted the Panthers' Jonah O'Brien and returned it 40 yards for a score to make it 21-7 with 1:09 left before halftime. Deandre Lamont later picked O'Brien and ran it in from 3 yards out at the beginning of the third quarter. The Freeport, Ill., native led the team with 12 tackles, recorded a career-best three sacks, tied a career-high with 3.0 TFLs and added a forced fumble in the win for the Redbirds. Vandenburgh has now recorded double-digit tackle efforts in the first two games of the season for ISU. His final sack of the game was one of the biggest defensive plays of the contest, as he took down Valparaiso's Mason Kaplan for the third time with just 23 seconds left on the clock and that led to the game-sealing interception on the next play by Franky West. - Missouri Valley Football
