At some point in the spring, while dueling the Bulldogs defense and coordinator Kevin Coyle, Jake Haener says he knew that was a brain he wanted to pick and he has twice and sometimes three times a week. "He was just throwing a lot of different pressures from me that I had never seen before, that's from the Minnesota Vikings guy and his time in the league," Haener said. "It was a lot of different things that I hadn't seen at the college level that is really 2.0, and I just wanted to sit down with him, talk it through with him and understand it, get a better idea of how defenses are going to attack me this fall and then just talk defense." "The more you learn and know about the game, the better you're going to play. I think the thing that's going to separate me is the mental game and the mental aspect of things and the intangible piece. I've been putting a lot of time on that, just trying to be sharper, be smarter and more mature."

Tedford said that is a critical piece in Haener's development, and more educated risks can pay great rewards. "There are not too many people that can throw the ball like Jake can throw the ball and that work as hard as he works in the film room," Tedford said. "He is completely dedicated to his craft. I don't care if that's with his nutrition, his sleep. The guy is completely dedicated to being the best player he can possibly be." The game is slowing down for Haener, more comfortable with the offense and now opposing defenses. "I really was last year, too, but I just think it's going to be a lot slower for me this year," Haener said. "The game is going to slow down for me and I'm going to take that next step that I've been trying to take. I took that from my first year to my second year and I think my second year to third year is going to be even better. "It's all experience. I've played in some big games now. We've won some big games. I'm excited for what's to come." - Fresno Bee

The NCAA approved a blanket waiver for all 2020 fall sports student-athletes to retain a year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In his first senior year last season, Mims appeared in all 13 games … got the start in two games … finished the season as the team's second-leading rusher with 127 carries for 710 yards and six touchdowns … averaged 5.6 yards per carry … added 25 receptions for 324 yards and four touchdowns … averaged 13 yards per catch … was second on the team with 10 total touchdowns … had three multi-score games … had three 100-yard rushing performances this season, the most by a Bulldog in a season since 2019. - Fresno State Football

Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener was selected as the preseason Mountain West offensive player of year on Thursday, Day Two of the conference media days. He was joined on the team by wideout Jalen Cropper, running back Jordan Mims, offensive tackle Dontae Bull and safety Evan Williams. The five Bulldogs selected are their most since 2014 and second most in their 12 years in the conference, behind seven in 2013 including quarterback Derek Carr and wideout Davante Adams. Therein is a challenge for the Bulldogs quarterback and an offense that returns 83% of its offensive production - Fresno State on Wednesday was picked to win the West Division in the conference, with 20 of 28 first-place votes.

"Jalen and I have already talked about it," Haener said. "We want to put up some similar stuff to what Derek and Davante did and just be the best version of ourselves." Carr in 2013 hit 68.7% of his passes for 5,083 yards with 50 touchdowns and only eight interceptions, and Adams caught 131 passes for 1,719 yards and 24 touchdowns. The 68.7%, 5,083 and 50 passing touchdowns by Carr were all school single-season records as were the 131 receptions, 1,719 yards and 24 touchdown receptions by Adams, and those 24 touchdown catches came at a time when the school career record was only 25; Henry Ellard (1979-82), then Charlies Jones (1992-95) and Bernard Berrian (1999-2003). But Haener and Cropper hinted at the best version of themselves and their upside at times last season, and have similarities to Carr and Adams with the Bulldogs' wideout moving outside after lining up in the slot on 94.5% of his snaps in 2021 when he caught 85 passes for 899 yards with 11 touchdowns. - Fresno Bee

The University of Southern California will take the historic step of joining the Big Ten Conference in 2024, a move that will position USC and its student-athletes for long-term success in both athletics and academics. "Over the past three years, we have worked hard to ground our university decisions in what is best for our students," said USC President Carol L. Folt. "With the Big Ten, we are joining a storied conference that shares our commitment to academic excellence and athletic competitiveness, and we are positioning USC and our student-athletes for long-term success and stability amidst the rapidly evolving sports media and collegiate athletics landscapes. We are delighted to begin this new chapter in 2024."

The Big Ten Conference has voted to accept both USC and crosstown rival UCLA as full members of the conference effective August 2, 2024, enabling both schools to remain in the Pac-12 Conference for the duration of the Pac-12's existing media rights agreements. "Ultimately, the Big Ten is the best home for USC and Trojan athletics as we move into the new world of collegiate sports," Athletic Director Mike Bohn said. "We are excited that our values align with the league's member institutions. We also will benefit from the stability and strength of the conference; the athletic caliber of Big Ten institutions; the increased visibility, exposure, and resources the conference will bring our student-athletes and programs; and the ability to expand engagement with our passionate alumni nationwide." - USCTrojans.com

Throughout the spring, as Simeon Harris was finishing high school, he kept hearing how well Colorado's young cornerbacks were playing in practice. As a young corner set to join the Buffaloes this summer, Harris got excited. "It was good seeing them and watching them compete and all of that," Harris said prior to leaving for Boulder on Saturday. "It should be a good group of guys when we're all in there in the room. It's gonna be a lot of competition. Yes (we're young) and we're all scrappy. We all love to compete. It's gonna be fun." Harris will be one of four true freshmen corners for the Buffs this season, along with Keyshon Mills, Jason Oliver and Joshua Wiggins. Oliver and Wiggins got to CU in January and went through practices.

The cornerback room also includes true sophomores Kaylin Moore and Nikko Reed, third-year sophomore Toren Pittman and junior Nigel Bethel Jr. "It's gonna be a lot of great competition," Harris said. "I'm not shying away from any anything, so I'm ready for all of that." A 6-foot, 180-pound corner from Benicia High School in Vallejo, Calif., Harris is one of 19 newcomers set to join the Buffs, who begin summer workouts this week. "I'm excited about it," he said. "I'm not really nervous. I'm just really pumped up to get out there and get ready to play. I've been waiting to get back on the field for a long time now. So being in that environment should be great." - Daily Camera

Fresno State will take its big expectations for the 2022 football season onto the biggest stage it has ever had, with all 12 of its regular-season games to be televised on a national platform for the first time in school history. That includes what three-plus months out appears to be an outsized opportunity at USC on Sept. 17, which will be on FOX that night at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs' Oct. 8 game at Boise State also could be a candidate to be carried by the primary FOX network, and at this point is one of five Fresno State games slated for FOX, FS1 or FS2.

The TV assignment and kickoff times for those games will be determined during the season 12 days in advance, though a six-day window is also available to FOX. The Bulldogs' season-opener against Cal Poly, which was moved to Thursday Sept. 1, will be televised by FS1, giving quarterback Jake Haener and a high-flying offense that returns 83% of its production from a 10-3 team a chance to make an early national impression. The Bulldogs have one game locked in on FOX, two on FS1, five on one of the FOX networks and four games on the CBS Sports Network, according to the Mountain West Conference, which on Thursday announced the bulk of its national television schedule. Kickoff times for seven of the Bulldogs' games also have been set, and games at UNLV and against Wyoming over Thanksgiving weekend have been moved to Friday nights on Nov. 11 and Nov. 25. - Fresno Bee

The Mountain West Conference will eliminate its two-division format in football for the 2023 season. The conference announced Friday that the two teams with the highest winning percentage will compete in the league championship game. The decision came two days after the NCAA threw out requirements dictating how conferences can determine their champions and the Pac-12 scrapped its two-division format. The two-division format will remain in place for the 2022 season.

A scheduling model and tiebreaking procedures are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Other conferences are expected to follow, most notably the 14-team Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC is looking to implement a new scheduling model as soon as 2023. To have a conference title game, NCAA rules previously required leagues to split into divisions if they could not play a full round-robin schedule. But those rules were scrapped by the NCAA Division I Council. - AP College Football

Former Fresno State wide receiver Keric Wheatfall went undrafted in the 2022 NFL draft, but was one of 19 players invited to the Philadelphia Eagles' minicamp this month. Now, he's officially signed with the team. Wheatfall initially attended Blinn College in Brenham, Texas after a successful two-sport high school career in Cypress Ranch, where he ran track as well.

During his two seasons in junior college, Wheatfall recorded six touchdowns, 798 yards and 47 receptions, with 247Sports ranking him No. 17 for junior college wide receivers. He went on to become a Bulldog soon after. Wheatfall earned an invitation to the Eagles' minicamp and later signed to the team. As a junior at Fresno State, Wheatfall appeared in 10 games, starting in four games and improving to 17 catches for 307 yards. In his senior year, Wheatfall received an All-Mountain West honorable mention for his position, but played in only five games. - The Collegian

Fresno State wideout Jalen Cropper had dismissed the reports that he would enter the NCAA transfer portal back in December, when the Bulldogs' football program was stuck in a temporary state of confusion. Coach Kalen DeBoer was off to a prime Power Five conference job at Washington in the Pac-12 and quarterback Jake Haener already had filed paperwork to transfer with the intention of returning to the Huskies' program, where he had started his college career. Cropper, who was second in the Mountain West Conference with 11 touchdown receptions and third with 85 catches, said that he would not be the next player to hit the transfer portal.

He did, however, leave a door open to an early entry into the NFL Draft. "Being draft-eligible, that's something I'll take into consideration, for sure, but I never had a thought of leaving Fresno State," he told The Bee. "I came here for a reason. I didn't come here to leave." But he ended any speculation on his future on Sunday, posting to social media he would return for a senior season. "These past 3 years have been life changing and the memories I have made with my teammates and this staff are ones that I will cherish forever," Cropper said, on Twitter and Instagram. "I'm grateful of everyone in the organization believing in me and helping me here as a man and as an athlete. - Fresno Bee

Jordan Mims ran for 165 yards and two touchdown and caught five passes for 71 yards and another score to help Fresno State beat UTEP 31-24 on Saturday in the New Mexico Bowl. Fresno State (10-3) won the bowl game for the first time in three tries. Jake Haener was 26 of 41 for 286 yards and a touchdown. His status had been somewhat in doubt when he briefly entered the transfer portal after coach Kalen DeBoer took the job at Washington.

Mims' 22-yard catch and run late in third quarter gave the Bulldogs a 26-17 lead. But it was setting the tone with the ground game that was important, he said. "The offensive line, we preached running the ball hard all this week," Mims said. "Even though they have a good defense, it's all about us and what we do and I think we showed that (Saturday) by running the ball." Taking advantage of Mims was a key part of the game plan, said Bulldogs interim head coach Lee Marks. "We knew we were going to be able to rely on Jordan," he said. "To be honest, he's such a good player. One cut, get vertical, just downhill. He told me coach, 'I'm not going to get tired. And he did not. That's tremendous for him." The Miners (7-6) pulled to 26-24 early in the fourth quarter on Calvin Brownholtz's 51-yard touchdown pass to Trent Thompson. - Fresno State/AP College Football
