Freshman E.J. Warner passed for 173 yards and two touchdowns, De'Von Fox blocked three punts and Temple beat Lafayette 30-14 on Saturday for the Owls' first victory under coach Stan Drayton. Warner, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, entered in the second quarter with the game tied at 7 after starter D'Wan Mathis was pulled. Warner capped his first series with a 15-yard touchdown strike to Ian Stewart for his first collegiate touchdown.

Warner connected with a wide-open Jordan Smith for a 17-yard touchdown to give Temple a 28-14 lead early in the fourth quarter, and Fox's third blocked punt led to a safety to cap the scoring. Jose Barbon caught eight passes for 118 yards for Temple (1-1), which hosts Rutgers next Saturday. Darvon Hubbard and Edward Saydee each had a rushing touchdown. One of Fox's blocked punts led to a short field and Saydee capped a four-play, 22-yard drive with a 9-yard scoring run for a 21-7 lead with 23 seconds left in the first half. Ryan Schuster completed 10 of 15 passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns for Lafayette (1-1). - Temple/AP College Football

A new season and a new staff was supposed to equal a fresh start for Korey Foreman. But through two crucial weeks of USC's preseason camp, the former No. 1 overall recruit has barely had the chance to get started. An undisclosed injury has kept Foreman sidelined since last week. Before that, he missed time for what USC coach Lincoln Riley called "a prior commitment." Altogether, he's sat out most of the Trojans' camp so far - after missing the start of spring practice with an injury too - leaving minimal opportunities for him to make any sort of impression on USC's staff ahead of the season. "Is that a concern, Korey missing that? Sure," Riley said on Tuesday. "But I want to make the point, it's not because it's Korey, it's because it's a player on the USC football team." Few other USC players, though, arrived with anywhere near equal hype to Foreman, whose signing was seen as such a watershed moment for USC's football program that it was commemorated on a campus billboard. After a frustrating freshman year that saw him used only sparingly, this season is a crucial one for the former five-star recruit and his trajectory under Riley. - Los Angeles Times

Wednesday was the Fresno State Bulldogs' 13th practice of Fall Camp and their 28th practice of the year dating back to the spring under Jeff Tedford's new coaching staff. But it was the first practice of 2022 for star offensive lineman Dontae Bull. Bull has started 25 of the Bulldogs' 31 games at left tackle over the past three seasons. He was one of the five Mountain West O-Linemen selected to the preseason all-conference team in July.

But an offseason procedure had sidelined him shortly after the end of the 2021 season. Bull observed the team's first 12 preseason practices from the sideline - then suddenly suited up on Day 13. Bull's practice appearance was the first time that Fresno State's four new defensive assistant coaches saw the veteran O-Lineman lined up against them. "I don't know a whole lot, other than what we've seen from past performances," new defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said of Bull. Only defensive players and coaches were available to the media on Wednesday. "He's been out for quite a while. He's got to work his way back into shape. I'm looking at my defensive guys in practice so I'm not really that concerned about who is on offense. In a few more days I'll have a better feeling about where he's at. I know it was great to see him out here." - 247sports.com

Transferring to Fresno State from Sacramento State in 2019, Perales has made an impact on the defensive line for the past two seasons. Being named a team captain in 2021, Perales stepped up as a leader on the defense while recording the most tackles on the defensive line with a single-season career-best 40 stops. Perales also had single-season career-best marks in tackles for loss (13.0) and sacks (7.0) a season ago. His 13.0 tackles for loss accounted for 72 yards lost, a team-best yards lost. A force on the line, Perales had seven-straight games with at least 1.0 tackles for loss from Sept. 24-Nov.25 last season. - Fresno State Football

Senior Tyrone Sampson Jr. has had a few opportunities to secure a spot in the Bulldogs' offensive line rotation, but the former 4-star recruit in the 2018 recruiting class is putting together the pieces this fall. Sampson has played primarily as a center, but has lined up with the No. 1 offense at right and left guard in fall camp. A big piece to that equation has been nutrition, and his weight. "Tyrone has changed his body," offensive line coach Saga Tuitele said. "Tyrone has done a great job. Heck, he inspired me. But he has changed his body. He's in good shape and he's working his tail off." Sampson said his diet had resembled that of a typical college student.

But most aren't 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds, and don't spend hours in a day on the practice field or in the weight room. "That process has been going on since about January, when we came back," he said. "I got on a plan with (assistant athletics director for sports performance Andy Ward). He explained to me what I should be eating and what might not be so good to eat. The things that I should be eating really shook things up. I started seeing little changes in my body here and there. I'm trying to stay consistent with it. "It definitely feels different. I feel like I can go more full speed. I can last longer on drives. I just feel better moving play to play, moving in space. I feel like I'm moving a lot better than I was last year." - Fresno Bee

2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Nikko Remigio, Fresno State,...Remigio, a graduate transfer from Cal, joined the Fresno State football program in January and worked out with the team throughout spring football. In just a short amount of time as a Bulldog, Remigio has shown what he can bring to the program on offense and on special teams. While at Cal, Remigio was a four-year contributor on offense and special teams (2018-21). The native of Orange, Calif. played in 36 career games with 16 starts and finished with four-year totals of 1871 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns - including 97 receptions for 903 yards with seven touchdown grabs, 20 kick returns for 549 yards, 39 punt returns for 344 yards and one touchdown, 14 rushes for 75 yards rushing, and five tackles. - Fresno State Football

Haener finished the 2021 season with 4,096 yards passing and 33 touchdowns, completing 329-of-490 pass attempts.   Arizona coach Jedd Fisch called running back Rayshon Luke "special" at Pac-12 media days and suggested he could make an immediate impact all over the formation as a freshman, Michael Lev of the Arizona Daily Star reports. A four-star running back out of California, per 247Sports composite rankings, Luke looks set to get a share of touches out of the gate. The fact that he's been labeled a versatile player would seem to indicate the freshman will be utilized as more than just a running back, which makes sense given the team's lack of depth at wide receiver. - Arizona Daily Star

Tedford retired as Fresno State's head coach because of heart-related concerns. When successor Kalen DeBoer accepted the Washington job in December, the Bulldogs reached out to Tedford, who had regained full health. "It was almost like I never left," Tedford said. Quarteback Jake Haener, who entered the transfer portal after DeBoer bolted, decided to remain at Fresno. Haener is the league's most accurate passer (67.1%, with 33 TDs against nine picks). Also staying put are wideout Jalen Cropper (85 catches in 2021), running back Jordan Mims (236 all-purpose yards in theNew Mexico Bowl), and safety Evan Williams.

Haener jots notes on tips, suggestions and observations involving football. The notes are labeled by date and topic, then placed in binders. He has a dozen filled binders at his family's home and another eight in Fresno. One of the entries details a meeting with Tedford when Haener was 9 years old. During a lengthy career, Tedford has coached six quarterbacks who were first-round draft picks. Tedford said Aaron Rodgers, whom he coached for two seasons at Cal, and Haener share many of the same qualities. - Honolulu Advertiser
