  12/10/20 - Ronnie RiversrSr/2022, Fresno State, 5-08, 198 (DS#44 RB) + More +

Fresno State senior running back Ronnie Rivers' status will be evaluated day-to-day as the Bulldogs prepare for their final regular-season game in this COVID-19 truncated college football season, coach Kalen DeBoer said Monday. The senior running back, who is one away from setting the school career touchdowns record, suffered a lower leg injury Saturday night at the end of a 66-yard scoring run in the third quarter in a 37-26 loss at Nevada that was negated by an illegal block penalty.

"He's going to be day-to-day throughout the course of the week," DeBoer said in a weekly Zoom news conference. "It's not something where I feel he would be out for the rest of the season, especially if it was a long season ahead or anything like that. "I know he's going to do everything he can with his rehab day-to-day to make sure he's doing the best he can to get on the football field Saturday. It's just unfortunate the effort he made on that play was for naught because it was a huge turning point." Rivers is a huge part of the Bulldogs' offense, leading the team with 99 rushing plays, 27 pass receptions, 154.6 yards from scrimmage per game and nine touchdowns. - Fresno Bee

Fresno State running back Ronnie Rivers, at Utah State, became the first player in school history with 2,500 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards while tying the school record for career touchdowns. He has rushed for 2,561 yards in his Fresno State career and caught 107 passes for 1,019 yards and, remember, he missed two games as a true freshman in 2017 and three games as a sophomore in 2018 with injuries. Rivers can set that career touchdowns record on Saturday against the Wolf Pack as well as move up on a number of other career lists. - Fresno Bee

  11/08/20 - Ronnie RiversrSr/2022, Fresno State, 5-08, 198 (DS#44 RB) + More +

For the second consecutive week, Fresno State relied on Ronnie Rivers to lead the 'Dogs to victory as they improved to 2-1 on the young, pandemic-afflicted season. The senior running back was the best player on the field in Fresno State's 40-27 road-win over UNLV Saturday as he led the Bulldogs in both rushing and receiving. Rivers rushed for 133 yards and 3 touchdowns and grabbed 6 receptions for 99 yards and 1 touchdown. Rivers averaged 9.28 yards every time he touched the ball. In head coach Kalen DeBoer's words, Rivers "just understands the situation so well, doesn't panic." "It didn't all happen right away," DeBoer said. "I think the key was that the game kind of came to him. He always finds ways, and it seems like his shiftiness early on was a key. And he moved the chains at times. He just understands the situation so well, doesn't panic - a little penetration on some plays, didn't panic, just trust who he is and understand where the blocks are coming from."

If you ask Rivers why he was successful, though, it's all humility from him. "I would say the guys that I'm playing around, my linemen all the way to my quarterback and the receivers blocking on the outside - I can't do anything without those guys," Rivers said. "All the success I had on the field today is because of them, and I couldn't have asked for anything else." With his 4 touchdown performance, Rivers moved into second place all-time in career touchdowns at Fresno State with 43, one shy of the leader, running back Anthony Daigle. - San Joaquin Valley Sun and Valley Future Foundation

Ronnie Rivers scored four touchdowns, Chris Gaston made two interceptions and Fresno State defeated UNLV 40-27 on Saturday. Rivers rushed for 133 yards and three scores on 19 carries and caught six passes for a career-high 99 yards and another score. He has scored in 11 consecutive games. Rivers' 10-yard scoring run on the first play of the fourth quarter snapped a 27-27 tie and an interception by Gaston led to Cesar Silva's field goal and a 37-27 lead. Jake Haener's 35-yard run led to another Silva field goal with under two minutes remaining. Another Gaston interception ended UNLV's hopes.

Rivers' 16-yard TD run early in the third quarter gave the Bulldogs a 27-17 lead but the Rebels (0-3, 0-3 Mountain West) got a field goal from Daniel Gutierrez and Max Gilliam's 71-yard TD run to tie it. Gilliam had a combined 299 yards offense and two touchdowns but had the two interceptions plus a fumble. Jake Haener passed for 164 yards and a score and ran for 79 yards plus a touchdown for the Bulldogs (2-1, 2-1). Attendance was limited to 2,000 at 65,000-seat Allegiant Stadium. - AP College Football

  11/03/20 - Ronnie RiversrSr/2022, Fresno State, 5-08, 198 (DS#44 RB) + More +

Senior running back Ronnie Rivers did a little bit of everything for the Bulldogs in their second straight home game. Rivers scored three total touchdowns, finding the end zone on a 13-yard catch in the first quarter and breaking off a 32-yard run in the second period. On that scoring dash, Rivers took a short toss, broke a tackle and scampered into the end zone down the home sideline. "That guy's a beast," DeBoer said. Rivers, who is listed at 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds, is now fourth all-time in school history with 31 rushing touchdowns.

Against Colorado State, Rivers showed why he was a preseason All-Mountain West Conference running back. One of the conference's most versatile players, Rivers lined up at punt returner, running back, receiver and even at quarterback. In the third quarter, Rivers took a direct snap and scored on a one-yard run to hand the Bulldogs a 31-10 advantage. Rivers accounted for 164 yards from scrimmage (95 yards rushing, 69 yards receiving) on 28 offensive touches. He also had eight yards on punt returns. "It's a great feeling," Rivers said. "I'm prepared to do whatever to help us get a 'Dub." - Visalia Times-Delta

  11/03/20 - Jake HaenerrSr/2023, Fresno State, 6-0, 207 (DS#10 QB) + More +

It took a couple of games, but junior quarterback Jake Haener displayed why he was a Pac-12 talent. Haener, who transferred from the University of Washington to Fresno State last season, threw for a career-high 311 yards, completing 22-of-32 attempts. Haener averaged 13.9 yards per completion. A week after committing four turnovers in a loss to the Rainbow Warriors, Haener had an error-free game. Haener directed the Bulldogs on five scoring drives and helped the Bulldogs accumulate more than 400 yards of total offense. "It was really impressive how the guys came back to work and how the coaches prepared," Haener said. "It gave us an opportunity to do good things. I'm really impressed with that." Fresno State had three scoring drives, which all resulted in touchdowns, with 10 plays or more. The Bulldogs scored every time they were in the red zone, going 5-for-5, and averaged 5.5 yards per play. - Visalia Times-Delta

Jake Haener set career highs with 311 yards passing and three touchdowns, Ronnie Rivers tied his career best with three scores, and Fresno State scored 31 unanswered points in a 38-17 victory over Colorado State on Thursday night. Rivers carried it 23 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns and he caught five passes for 69 yards and a score for Fresno State (1-1, 1-1 Mountain West). Haener was 14-of-17 passing for 210 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Jordan Mims came out of the backfield and went untouched for a 15-yard receiving touchdown to extend Fresno State’s lead to 24-10 just before halftime. Todd Centeio completed just 10 of 23 passes for 141 yards for Colorado State (0-1). He carried it 12 times for 89 yards.   10/21/20 - Jake HaenerrSr/2023, Fresno State, 6-0, 207 (DS#10 QB) + More +

Fresno State football coach Kalen DeBoer kicked off his first game week at the helm of the Bulldogs' program by going with fourth-year junior and Washington transfer Jake Haener as his starting quarterback. "Right now we feel like Jake gives us the best chance for us to reach our full potential as a football team and as an offense," DeBoer said, in a Monday Zoom meeting. "That's a hard deal because a guy like (Ben) Wooldridge has put a lot into this program and will continue to do so. He has carried himself in a very first-class way and I know he's going to be there to support Jake. But we've had three good practices in preparation (for Hawaii) and Jake has been taking all of those snaps."

Haener and Wooldridge have been competing since the end of the 2019 season, through a winter strength and conditioning program, a spring practice that was canceled by the coronavirus, a summer full of video meetings but void of organized player-run practices while campus was closed due to COVID-19 and the past three weeks in an abbreviated fall camp. Haener emerged with the job and will take the first snap on Saturday when the Bulldogs open an eight-game 2020 football season against Hawaii (4:30 p.m., KSEE24, no fans allowed). It will be the fifth career game and first career college start for Haener, who played in four games at Washington in 2018 behind starter Jake Browning with somewhat mixed results. - Fresno Bee

  10/11/20 - Kevin AtkinsrSr/2022, Fresno State, 6-2, 314 (DS#39 DT) + More +

"One guy that stands out to me, I think Kevin Atkins looks as good as he has," offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said. "He's a dominant player on the inside and we have all we can handle when he's at the 3-technique." As the season progresses the Bulldogs could deploy Atkins at different spots across the defensive line, adding to his play-making potential. "He's an athletic guy," Schmidt said. "He's a guy that can play up and down the line of scrimmage and we don't have a ton of those guys. We have some interior guys and then we have some guys that are edge-type guys, guys that are maybe situational pass rushers. "Kevin's a guy that can play all three downs. He can play anywhere from over the center to out on a tackle. He's not out of place out there. He has the most positional versatility of any guy that we have - he can play anywhere we need him to play." - Fresno Bee
