FIU football player Luke Knox, who appeared in 23 games at Mississippi before joining the Panthers and was the brother of Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox, has died, the university said Thursday. Luke Knox died Wednesday evening, school officials said. The cause was not revealed, though the university said police do not suspect foul play. Knox, who studied business, was 22. "Words cannot express the heartfelt sorrow we feel because of the passing of our teammate and friend, Luke Knox," FIU coach Mike MacIntyre wrote on social media. "I had the honor of coaching Luke at Ole Miss and at FIU. While I admired his passion for football, his genuine love for his family and teammates is what I will always remember." FIU players were told of Knox's death late Wednesday. Thursday's practice was canceled, and grief counselors were brought in to meet with the team and others from the university community.   Eric Kiesau noticed a change in Tar'Varish Dawson Jr.'s demeanor about midway through last season. Kiesau, now entering his first season as Auburn's offensive coordinator, said Dawson "might be the most improved young player on offense" this offseason. He put together a strong spring, which he capped with three receptions for 28 yards and a 7-yard carry during the A-Day spring game while leading the Tigers in targets and receptions. During SEC Media Days last month, Harsin described Dawson as a "completely different player" than he was a year ago and identified him as someone who has the kind of big-play potential that Auburn desperately needs at the wide receiver position. "He has good hands, and he can track the ball," Kiesau said. "Like I said, I'm excited. And we have to be creative with how we use him. Really. We do. But we'll find ways."

The Tigers are replacing two of their top-three receivers from last season, with Kobe Hudson now at UCF and Demetris Robertson's eligibility exhausted. Outside of fifth-year senior Shedrick Jackson, who was the team's second-leading receiver in 2021, Auburn doesn't have much experience or proven playmakers at the position heading into the season. That's where Dawson will have his opportunity, along with a slew of other returners and newcomers in the room. Expectations appear to be mounting for Dawson, though, especially after some of the potential he flashed when he first arrived on campus last year. Dawson, rated as the nation's No. 22 athlete coming out of high school, made a fast impression a year ago during fall camp with his speed and big-play ability. - Birmingham News

From one to 10, the level of excitement new FIU football coach Mike MacIntyre is feeling for his first fall camp with the Panthers breaks the scale. "It's way above 10," MacIntyre said. The Panthers, who will have their first fall practice on August 1, have added six players since spring practice ended in April. The Panthers also got starting safety Dorian Hall off the injury list. That leaves FIU with 83 scholarship players. MacIntyre wants to keep two scholarships in his back pocket just in case desirable players become available. Luke Knox, a 6-3, 240-pound outside linebacker, spent the past four years at Ole Miss, making two starts in 2019. He was switched to tight end last year, but MacIntyre wants him on defense. His older brother is Buffalo Bills starting tight end Dawson Knox. - Miami Herald

Ex-FIU running back D'vonte Price has a legit shot at making the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent this fall. Just ask his former FIU coach, Butch Davis. "He can run and catch, and he's also big enough for blitz pickup," Davis said of Price, listed at 6-2 and 215 pounds and with 4.57 speed in the 40. "He can play special teams, too, which will help." The Colts appear to have an opening for a third-string running back, which could be an ideal spot for Price.

If he makes the Colts, Price can learn from starter Jonathan Taylor, who is coming off a Pro Bowl season in which he led the NFL in rushing yards (1,811) and rushing touchdowns (18). Price could also learn from Taylor's backup, Nyheim Hines, who averaged 4.9 yards per rush last season. In four years in the NFL, Hines is averaging 676 scrimmage yards and 53 receptions per season. - Miami Herald
