  NOV 18 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Quay Holmes, ETSU, R-So., RB, Powder Springs, Ga.,...ETSU running back Quay Holmes ran for a school-record 255 yards and a career-best three touchdowns in the Bucs' 38-33 win over Mercer on Saturday. Holmes averaged 9.8 yards per carry on 26 attempts, ripping off a long of 74 yards to break the 21-year-old school record of 242 rushing yards. The redshirt sophomore from Powder Springs, Georgia, also had three kick returns for 59 yards, giving him 314 all-purpose yards on the day. Holmes' big day put him over 1,000 rushing yards on the day, making him just the fifth player in program history to reach the milestone in a season.   Quay Holmes rushed for a career-high 255 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries and East Tennessee State took a big first-half lead and held off Mercer 38-33 on Saturday. Tyray Devezin finished with 168 yards and four TDs for Mercer. His 11-yard scoring run gave the Bears a 7-0 first-quarter lead and his second TD gave Mercer a 14-10 lead 5 seconds into the second quarter. But Holmes pitched in with TD runs of 4 and 1 yard and Tyler Riddell hit Keith Coffee for a 27-yard score for a 31-14 lead halftime lead for the Buccaneers (3-8, 1-7 Southern Conference), who picked up their first conference win of the season.

Devezin's 13-yard TD run and Kaelan Riley's 4-yard TD pass to Chris Ellington pulled Mercer within 31-26 just 7 seconds into the final period. Holmes' third scoring run -- a 3-yarder -- pushed ETSU's lead to 12. Devezin's 7-yard TD run with 4:33 left in the game capped the scoring for the Bears (4-7, 3-5). The Buccaneers then used a 10-play drive to run out the clock. ETSU finished with 526 yards of offense, including 410 on the ground. Mercer had 414 yards of offense with 190 coming on the ground.   2019 BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD WATCHLIST ADDITION: DB Artevius Smith, ETSU,...Smith has been a one-man wrecking crew in the secondary for the Bucs this season, wrapping up 66 tackles and pulling in four interceptions on the season. The Alabama native has also forced one fumble and broken up four passes through the first nine games this season. The redshirt-senior ranks 11th in the Southern Conference in tackles per game (7.3), while his four interceptions lead the league.

Smith has twice been named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week for his performances against Furman and Samford. Smith finished with just five tackles against the Paladins on Sept. 28, but was able to come down with his second interceptions in as many games, while also lodging a ball loose for his only forced fumble this season. Smith was later a recipient of the award for the second time this season for 10 tackles and one interception at Samford on Oct. 26.   OCT 28 SOCON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Artevius Smith, ETSU, R-Sr., DB, Birmingham, Ala.,...ETSU defensive back Artevius Smith earned his second weekly award of the season with a well-rounded performance in the Bucs' 24-17 loss at Samford. The redshirt senior, playing in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, had 10 tackles on the day, seven of which were solo and one of which went for a loss. Smith also had two pass breakups and an interception, returning the goal-line pick 20 yards to kickstart an ETSU scoring drive that bridged the first and second quarters and tied the game at 7. Smith recorded double-digit tackles for the second time this season, while the interception was his fourth in five games. Other nominees: Willie Eubanks III (The Citadel), Eric Jackson (Mercer), Armond Lloyd (Samford), Marshall Cooper (Chattanooga), Jayden Pauling (Western Carolina) and Jireh Wilson (Wofford). - Southern Conference Football

  SEPT 30/WEEK 5 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Artevius Smith, ETSU, R-Sr., DB, Birmingham, Ala.,...ETSU defensive back Artevius Smith had a pair of takeaways and five tackles in the Bucs' 17-10 loss at No. 15 Furman on Saturday. The redshirt senior from Birmingham, Alabama, recorded his first career forced fumble in the second quarter, leading to ETSU's only touchdown of the contest. In the fourth quarter, with the Bucs trailing 17-10, Smith intercepted a Furman pass at the 1-yard line to prevent a Paladin score and keep ETSU's hopes alive. It was Smith's second fourth-quarter interception in as many weeks. The weekly award is the second of his career.   Quay Holmes scored on a 2-yard run for the fourth-quarter lead, Artevius Smith capped a big game with a big interception, and East Tennessee State rallied to defeat Austin Peay 20-14 on Saturday. Holmes, who gained 60 yards on 17 carries, scored with 6:58 remaining and Tyler Kettner added a 37-yard field goal for the Buccaneers (2-2). After Kettner's field goal with 1:38 remaining, Austin Peay gained one first down before Smith's interception sealed the win for ETSU. The Governors (2-2) had taken a 14-10 halftime lead on Kentel Williams' 1-yard run with 14 seconds left in the second quarter. The second half was scoreless until Holmes' touchdown.
