Jim Harbaugh will make no declarations, no promises as to what might come out of Michigan's quarterback competition this fall. The only thing he expects between Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy, he told reporters Thursday, is a phrase the coach has uttered many times before. "It'll be competitive," Harbaugh said at the Michigan football showcase at Ferris State University. "The dynamic, I would say, is competitive." As the Wolverines inch closer to fall camp and begin summer workouts this summer in Ann Arbor, everyone wants to know what happens at quarterback. McNamara is coming off an impressive season, throwing for more than 2,500 yards and 15 touchdowns in his first full season as starter, leading Michigan to a 12-2 season, Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff berth.

As McNamara, a redshirt junior, aptly reminded the media in the spring: "I'm a Big Ten championship starting quarterback." Meanwhile, all McNamara has heard the last 12 months has been chatter about J.J. McCarthy, the former five-star recruit with a big arm and elite athleticism. Harbaugh declared the quarterback job open entering spring, but McCarthy was quickly limited in his throwing with an undisclosed shoulder injury. McCarthy is believed to be healthy and throwing again, according to media reports, suggesting he'll be full-go once camp begins in early August. "Every time I ask him, that's what he's saying," Harbaugh said. "He's feeling good about it. The beautiful thing about J.J. McCarthy is, he's like a kid in a candy store. That's his mentality. That's his attitude. That hasn't changed one bit. "If that's any indication, I would say he's right on schedule." - Ann Arbor News

It was a monumental career moment for Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara, helping lead Michigan to a victory over Ohio State and earning a chance to play for a Big Ten football championship. McNamara started every game for the Wolverines last season as they went 12-2 including winning the Big Ten title. His teammates have long shared their impressions of McNamara as a strong leader, and he also has conveyed how important he holds that aspect of the game. But now fans can find out a bit more about McNamara, his impressions of particular games and his leadership style and what it takes to be a Michigan quarterback.

McNamara has partnered in a unique five-part series NIL deal with REVEL Moments that launches Tuesday at 7 p.m. The series, called "THE LEADER," is $40 to participate and can be accessed at https://revelmoments.com/products/the-leader. It will last an hour and is limited to 350 fans. REVEL describes this as a live docuseries focused on McNamara's life and journey. The group has worked with professional athletes in similar aspects, but he is the first college athlete to be featured. "It's really fan/viewer engagement with me where we cover questions and topics regarding the overall general topic of what each episode is," McNamara told The Detroit News. "It's a way of me engaging with my fans, Michigan fans, covering different parts of my life and my career. - Detroit News

By the time the fourth quarter began, it was OK for Cade McNamara and Michigan to look ahead. McNamara threw for two touchdowns, Hassan Haskins ran for two, and the No. 8 Wolverines did their part to raise the stakes of next weekend's showdown with Ohio State, routing Maryland 59-18 on Saturday. Mike Sainristil made a one-handed catch in the end zone for a second-quarter TD, and Donovan Edwards had 10 catches for 170 yards and a touchdown. That all helped make this a relatively stress-free game for the Wolverines - a week before the big one. "I think we're ready," McNamara said. "I mean, it's hard not to think about that team when you're so close, but I'm glad that we came out of this game with a win. We did what we had to do." The Wolverines (10-1, 7-1, No. 6 CFP) host the Buckeyes next week, and the winner will go to the Big Ten title game. Michigan hasn't won the conference since 2004 and hasn't beaten Ohio State since 2011. "We want to win all the marbles," Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh said. "We're in the position we want to be in. We've been preparing for this, really the entire year, and now bring that preparation to life this week - play for it all." - Michigan/AP College Football

Tyler Riddell threw a 13-yard touchdown to Malik Murray with 1:47 left and No. 8-ranked East Tennessee State beat No. 21 Mercer 38-35 on Saturday to win the Southern Conference title. Mercer kicker Delvin Folser missed a 42-yard field goal attempt for a chance to tie it as time expired in front of a record crowd of 10,594. It was the fourth time this season ETSU (10-1, 8-1) rallied to win after trailing in the second half. The Buccaneers built a 21-10 halftime lead before the Bears (7-3, 6-2) scored 18 points in the third quarter. Quay Holmes ran for 132 yards on 25 carries and in the process broke George Searcy's single-season rushing record and Brandon Walker's career rushing mark. Riddell completed 26 of 29 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Fred Payton threw for 375 yards for Mercer with two touchdowns but was intercepted three times. - AP College Football

Jacob Saylors rushed for a program-record 266 yards and three touchdowns as East Tennessee State blew open a tight game after halftime to defeat Western Carolina 56-35 in the Blue Ridge Border Battle on Saturday. The victory sets up a clash for the Southern Conference championship next week when ETSU (9-1, 6-1) plays host to Mercer (7-2, 6-1). The Buccaneers are ranked No. 12 in the FCS coaches poll, and Mercer is receiving votes. ETSU and Western Carolina (3-7, 3-4) had fought through a 21-21 first quarter into a 35-35 tie at halftime. The second half belonged to ETSU as the Bucs scored three rushing touchdowns - a 1-yard run by Tyler Riddell, a Saylors 1-yard run and a 41-yard burst by Quay Holmes - while holding the Catamounts scoreless. Western Carolina, which had won three consecutive SoCon games for the first time since the 2015 season, was unable to get on track after halftime, ending possessions with two punts, a turnover on downs and an interception. - AP College Football

Quay Holmes ran for 161 yards and scored twice and FCS No. 14-ranked East Tennessee State held off 18th-ranked VMI 27-20 on Saturday. The Buccaneers (8-1, 5-1 Southern Conference), Chattanooga and Mercer all sit atop the conference with 5-1 records. Chattanooga plays Mercer on Nov. 13 and ETSU plays Mercer on Nov. 20. Chattanooga beat East Tennessee State 21-16 earlier in the season. Holmes ran for scores of 4 and 2 yards just 90 seconds apart late in the first quarter. Jared Folks' 13-yard interception return of VMI quarterback Seth Morgan set up a short field for ETSU, and following the score, Zion Alexander intercepted Morgan and returned it 27 yards to again set up a short field leading to Holmes' touchdown. The Keydets attempted to rally but saw a 13-play, 65-yard drive come to an end when Tyree Robinson recovered Collin Ironside's fumble that was forced by Caman Cody at the ETSU 10-yard line. Morgan threw for 248 yards for VMI (6-3, 4-2). - AP College Football
