Jim Harbaugh offered little update on Michigan's pending quarterback competition, praising both players in a session with reporters on Tuesday. Harbaugh, speaking at Lucas Oil Stadium for Big Ten Media Days, told the media that his coaching staff "made it work" last year with Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy, both of whom "had phenomenal seasons." "J.J. in his true-freshman year; Cade in his junior year," Harbaugh said. "Both played outstanding, winning football every time they went out there." It was the first time Harbaugh had talked football publicly since early-June, when he appeared at a football camp in Big Rapids, Mich., and told reporters that he anticipated a "competitive" competition between McNamara and McCarthy.

McNamara, who started all 14 games for Michigan's Big Ten championship team, was one of four players invited by Harbaugh to Indianapolis, site of the annual two-day media event. He fielded questions for an hour after. "I've got a really cool stat on Cade McNamara," Harbaugh offered reporters. "Over 50 percent of his drives end in points. I don't know, exactly, what the number is for J.J. - but it seems like every time he got in there and led a drive, it ended in points as well." - Ann Arbor News

Jim Harbaugh will make no declarations, no promises as to what might come out of Michigan's quarterback competition this fall. The only thing he expects between Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy, he told reporters Thursday, is a phrase the coach has uttered many times before. "It'll be competitive," Harbaugh said at the Michigan football showcase at Ferris State University. "The dynamic, I would say, is competitive." As the Wolverines inch closer to fall camp and begin summer workouts this summer in Ann Arbor, everyone wants to know what happens at quarterback. McNamara is coming off an impressive season, throwing for more than 2,500 yards and 15 touchdowns in his first full season as starter, leading Michigan to a 12-2 season, Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff berth.

As McNamara, a redshirt junior, aptly reminded the media in the spring: "I'm a Big Ten championship starting quarterback." Meanwhile, all McNamara has heard the last 12 months has been chatter about J.J. McCarthy, the former five-star recruit with a big arm and elite athleticism. Harbaugh declared the quarterback job open entering spring, but McCarthy was quickly limited in his throwing with an undisclosed shoulder injury. McCarthy is believed to be healthy and throwing again, according to media reports, suggesting he'll be full-go once camp begins in early August. "Every time I ask him, that's what he's saying," Harbaugh said. "He's feeling good about it. The beautiful thing about J.J. McCarthy is, he's like a kid in a candy store. That's his mentality. That's his attitude. That hasn't changed one bit. "If that's any indication, I would say he's right on schedule." - Ann Arbor News

It was a monumental career moment for Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara, helping lead Michigan to a victory over Ohio State and earning a chance to play for a Big Ten football championship. McNamara started every game for the Wolverines last season as they went 12-2 including winning the Big Ten title. His teammates have long shared their impressions of McNamara as a strong leader, and he also has conveyed how important he holds that aspect of the game. But now fans can find out a bit more about McNamara, his impressions of particular games and his leadership style and what it takes to be a Michigan quarterback.

McNamara has partnered in a unique five-part series NIL deal with REVEL Moments that launches Tuesday at 7 p.m. The series, called "THE LEADER," is $40 to participate and can be accessed at https://revelmoments.com/products/the-leader. It will last an hour and is limited to 350 fans. REVEL describes this as a live docuseries focused on McNamara's life and journey. The group has worked with professional athletes in similar aspects, but he is the first college athlete to be featured. "It's really fan/viewer engagement with me where we cover questions and topics regarding the overall general topic of what each episode is," McNamara told The Detroit News. "It's a way of me engaging with my fans, Michigan fans, covering different parts of my life and my career. - Detroit News
