Cade McNamara had a lackluster performance that was made moot by a dominant defense as No. 8 Michigan routed Colorado State 51-7 Saturday. The Big Ten championship winning quarterback started the opener and is scheduled to sit at the beginning of the Hawaii game next week when J.J. McCarthy gets a shot to take the first snap. McNamara started 1 of 5 and finished 9 of 18 for 136 yards, a total boosted by a short pass he threw that Roman Wilson turned into a 61-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. McCarthy made the most of his limited opportunity to play, running for a 20-yard score and going 4 of 4 for 30 yards through the air.

With McNamara under center, the Wolverines stalled at the Rams 13, 8 and 16 and settled for field goals in the first half that ended with them ahead 23-0. Michigan's defense, which had seven sacks and an interception, contributed to the flurry of scores with a 45-yard touchdown off a fumble recovery early in the third. The Rams avoided getting shutout midway through the fourth quarter when Clay Millen lofted a 34-yard pass that Tory Horton caught in the end zone to make it 44-7. Millen, a redshirt freshman, was 16 of 20 for 137 yards with a touchdown and an interception. - Michigan/AP College Football

Jacob Saylors scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and East Tennessee State, ranked No. 11 in the FCS preseason poll, rolled to a 44-7 win over Division II Mars Hill in a season-opening college football game on Thursday night. It was a stress-free debut for new coach George Quarles after replacing Randy Sanders, who retired after the Buccaneers set a school record with 11 wins and reached the FCS quarterfinals. Quarles was an assistant at Furman the last five seasons and is in four Tennessee halls of fame, including the Tennessee Football Coaches after going 250-16 in 22 seasons at Maryville High School. Saylors, the Southern Conference preseason Offensive Player of the Year, had scoring runs of 40 and 1-yard sandwiched around a 2 9-yard touchdown reception from Tyler Riddell as the Buccaneers led 20-0 after one quarter. Riddell added another TD strike in the second quarter and it was 34-0 at halftime. Jimmy Urza threw a 5-yard pass to Ty Snelson in the third quarter for the Mars Hill score. That came after Riddell's third touchdown pass. Riddell finished 14 of 19 for 197 yards passing. - AP College Football

Jim Harbaugh offered little update on Michigan's pending quarterback competition, praising both players in a session with reporters on Tuesday. Harbaugh, speaking at Lucas Oil Stadium for Big Ten Media Days, told the media that his coaching staff "made it work" last year with Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy, both of whom "had phenomenal seasons." "J.J. in his true-freshman year; Cade in his junior year," Harbaugh said. "Both played outstanding, winning football every time they went out there." It was the first time Harbaugh had talked football publicly since early-June, when he appeared at a football camp in Big Rapids, Mich., and told reporters that he anticipated a "competitive" competition between McNamara and McCarthy.

McNamara, who started all 14 games for Michigan's Big Ten championship team, was one of four players invited by Harbaugh to Indianapolis, site of the annual two-day media event. He fielded questions for an hour after. "I've got a really cool stat on Cade McNamara," Harbaugh offered reporters. "Over 50 percent of his drives end in points. I don't know, exactly, what the number is for J.J. - but it seems like every time he got in there and led a drive, it ended in points as well." - Ann Arbor News
