Keaton Mitchell ran for 222 yards and three touchdowns, and Holton Ahlers threw his third touchdown pass of the game with 1:11 left to lift East Carolina to a 49-46 win over Temple on Saturday. The victory gives East Carolina seven wins for the second straight season. Temple took the lead on E.J. Warner's fifth touchdown pass of the game, a 15-yard strike to David Martin-Robinson with 6:19 left in the game for a 46-42 lead. The teams traded punts and the Owls pinned East Carolina at its own 11-yard line with three minutes to play. Ahlers drove the Pirates 89 yards in eight plays to take the lead. He threw the game-winning touchdown pass on a dead run after evading a fierce Temple pass rush.

Jaylen Johnson broke off his route to catch the ball on front of an Owls safety at the 5 and scored. The East Carolina defense stopped Temple on four plays to preserve the win. Mitchell got East Carolina (7-5, 4-4) on the board in the first quarter, bursting 49 yards for a touchdown and then added two more short runs to the end zone in the third quarter. He had 27 carries and topped the century mark for the sixth straight game. He also pulled in a 73-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Warner threw for 527 yards and five touchdowns for Temple (3-9, 1-7), completing 45 of 63 pass attempts.   Mike Wright threw three touchdown passes and Vanderbilt upset Florida 31-24 on Saturday afternoon for its second straight Southeastern Conference victory. Vanderbilt (5-6, 2-5) took a 7-3 lead and never looked back against Florida (6-5, 3-5). The loss ended a two-game win streak for the Gators, who had won their last eight games against Vanderbilt. Florida opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal by Adam Mihalek and managed nothing but a 44-yard Mihalek field goal the rest of the half. Vanderbilt took a 7-3 lead in the second quarter when Mike Wright connected with Jayden McGowan for a 10-yard touchdown. The Commodores weren't finished. With 3:22 left in the first half, Florida's Jason Marshall Jr. fumbled a punt from Vanderbilt's Matthew Hayball at the Gators' 5-yard line. The ball rolled into the end zone where it was recovered by Wesley Schelling for the touchdown and a 14-6 Vanderbilt lead at the half.

Florida struck on its first possession of the third quarter. Anthony Richardson found running back Montrell Johnson Jr. on the right side for a 3-yard scoring pass to get the Gators within 14-12. A two-point conversion pass failed. Wright connected with flanker Gavin Schoenwald for a 7-yard touchdown with 3:22 left in the third and Vanderbilt led 21-12. Jaylen Mahoney picked off a Richardson pass and the Commodores took over at the Florida 28-yard line. Wright fired a scoring strike to tight end Ben Bresnahan on first down and the Commodores took a 28-12 lead into the final quarter. Richardson connected with Daejon Reynolds for a 74-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but Florida trailed 28-18 after the two-point conversion pass failed again. Joseph Bulovas kicked a 27-yard field goal with 4:38 left to play to extend Vanderbilt's lead to 31-18. Richardson passed to Reynolds for a 16-yard score with 3:13 remaining to cap the scoring for Florida. - AP College Football

Mike Wright ran 59 yards for a touchdown and completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Will Sheppard with 32 seconds left for a 24-21 win over Kentucky Saturday, snapping a 26-game Southeastern Conference losing streak. Wright was named the Commodores' starting quarterback to start the season but was benched following a 45-25 loss to Wake Forest September 10, Freshman AJ Swann started the last six games but was ruled out against Kentucky due to an injury.

Kentucky (6-4, 3-4) appeared to have survived the Vandy effort after Chris Rodriguez twice gave the Wildcats a lead, scoring from the 5 for a 15-14 lead, then racing 72 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-17 with 5:03 left in the game. Vandy's game-winning drive appeared stalled, but Octavious Oxendine's personal foul wiped out a Tyrell Ajian interception. Given new life, Wright completed a 40-yard pass to Quincy Skinner Jr. to the Kentucky 9 on fourth-and-11 to set up the winning score. Wright was 12 of 23 passing for 184 yards with an interception, and ran for 126 yards. Ray Davis added 129 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Commodores (4-6, 1-5). Vanderbilt's last conference win was Oct. 19, 2019 over Missouri 21-14. - Vanderbilt/AP College Football

Andrew Conrad kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired, Keaton Mitchell ran for 176 yards and East Carolina beat BYU 27-24 on Friday night. Conrad, a freshmen, made the game-winning kick with a line-drive wobbler that just cleared the crossbar following two timeouts from BYU. It was the fourth consecutive win for East Carolina (6-3) while BYU (4-5) has lost four straight. The Pirates were aided on their final drive with a 15-yard pass interference penalty on fourth-and-8 to get to the BYU 22 with 40 seconds left.

Mitchell carried the ball 21 times that included an 31-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He was later hit in the head by Jacob Boren after catching an 8-yard pass from Holton Ahlers with six minutes left in the game. Mitchell finished the series, but then sat on the bench with his helmet off and didn't play in the final drive. Boren was ejected for targeting. Ahlers threw for 197 yards and added a pair of short-yardage touchdown runs for the Pirates. Jaren Hall threw two touchdown passes and was 18-of-25 passing for 144 yards and added 60 yards on the ground for BYU. Lopini Katoa had 116 yards rushing on 20 carries with a 24-yard touchdown run. - East Carolina/AP College Football

  10/27/22 - Holton AhlersrSr/2023, East Carolina, 6-3, 227 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Less than an hour after the East Carolina football team pulled off its most important win of the season, Holton Ahlers spoke about the end. Aware that his time playing quarterback for ECU is fading, Ahlers said he made sure to take note of his entrance into Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium and the feeling of playing under the lights in front of a lively crowd. One home game remains on the 2022 schedule, a Nov. 19 date with Houston, and Saturday marked the fifth-year senior's penultimate game in Greenville. And while Ahlers spoke of his time here, a thought occurred to me. The Pirates, and everyone who invests time and energy in following this team, should be thankful that Ahlers is still around. ECU doesn't beat a Central Florida team that was receiving votes in the national polls the way it did on Saturday without a quarterback of his caliber.

He gave his receivers opportunities to make plays all game and his coach-like understanding of everything going on around him was important as the Pirates ripped apart the Knights' vaunted defense. It was Dec. 4, 2021, a Saturday, when Ahlers announced he would be returning for his fifth season at ECU. In the days leading up to games this year, some opposing coaches have joked that Ahlers has seemingly been around forever. He has certainly been a longtime fixture under center for the Pirates, and Saturday's performance showed why he belongs back there. His decision to return stamped out any question of who would play quarterback for the Pirates in 2022. His decision also pushed the pause button on the rest of the quarterback room's ascent to the field on game day. The rostered quarterbacks would spend another season lying in wait as the veteran exhausted his eligibility. - Daily Reflector

Holton Ahlers ran for a score and threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter as East Carolina jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a 34-13 victory over UCF on Saturday night. Freshman Andrew Conrad's 28-yard first-quarter field goal and Ahlers' 3-yard touchdown run gave East Carolina (5-3, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) a 10-0 lead midway through the second period. Ahlers connected with C.J. Johnson for a 39-yard touchdown and a 17-0 advantage before freshman Colton Boomer kicked a 27-yard field goal on the final play of the half to get UCF (5-2, 2-1) on the scoreboard.

The Knights pulled within 17-10 on their first possession of the second half when Isaiah Bowser scored on a 3-yard run at the end of a 10-play, 74-yard drive. But Keaton Mitchell answered with a 6-yard touchdown run, Conrad added a fourth-quarter field goal and Mitchell capped the scoring with a 37-yard run to preserve the win for the Pirates.
