Keaton Mitchell ran for 222 yards and three touchdowns, and Holton Ahlers threw his third touchdown pass of the game with 1:11 left to lift East Carolina to a 49-46 win over Temple on Saturday. The victory gives East Carolina seven wins for the second straight season. Temple took the lead on E.J. Warner's fifth touchdown pass of the game, a 15-yard strike to David Martin-Robinson with 6:19 left in the game for a 46-42 lead. The teams traded punts and the Owls pinned East Carolina at its own 11-yard line with three minutes to play. Ahlers drove the Pirates 89 yards in eight plays to take the lead. He threw the game-winning touchdown pass on a dead run after evading a fierce Temple pass rush.

Jaylen Johnson broke off his route to catch the ball on front of an Owls safety at the 5 and scored. The East Carolina defense stopped Temple on four plays to preserve the win. Mitchell got East Carolina (7-5, 4-4) on the board in the first quarter, bursting 49 yards for a touchdown and then added two more short runs to the end zone in the third quarter. He had 27 carries and topped the century mark for the sixth straight game. He also pulled in a 73-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Warner threw for 527 yards and five touchdowns for Temple (3-9, 1-7), completing 45 of 63 pass attempts. The freshman finished the season with 2,501 yards and 13 touchdowns. - East Carolina/AP College Football

Jake Garcia's two-point scoring run in the fourth overtime - the only play of the day to reach the end zone - gave Miami a 14-12 win over Virginia on Saturday. Neither team scored a touchdown in regulation. Hurricanes kicker Andres Borregales sent the game to overtime with a 20-yard field goal as the fourth quarter ended. Virginia and Miami traded field goals in each of the first two overtimes. Both missed their two-point tries in the third extra period. Then, after an incompletion by the Cavaliers, Garcia ran around the left side and dove for the pylon for the game-winning score. Miami played without quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, who was injured during last week's loss to Duke. Garcia, a redshirt freshman, started in his place and also used speedy, mobile freshman Jacurri Brown, at times. The Hurricanes' offense could not get untracked with either option behind center.

The game remained close throughout because Virginia's attack wasn't any more effective. Miami went up 3-0 at halftime, getting a 38-yard field goal from Borregales on the final play. Before that, the two teams combined for 247 total yards and 10 punts. Tied 3-3 late in the third quarter, UVa failed on four attempts from inside the 5-yard line, turning the ball over on downs when tight end Grant Misch dropped a fourth-down pass in the end zone. The Cavaliers took their first lead of the game on a 24-yard field goal by Will Bettridge with 12:11 left in the game, but Miami tied it on the final play of regulation on a 17-yard field goal to force overtime. The Cavaliers and Hurricanes are both fighting for bowl eligibility in their first seasons under new head coaches, Tony Elliott at UVa and Mario Cristobal at Miami. - AP College Football

Andrew Conrad kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired, Keaton Mitchell ran for 176 yards and East Carolina beat BYU 27-24 on Friday night. Conrad, a freshmen, made the game-winning kick with a line-drive wobbler that just cleared the crossbar following two timeouts from BYU. It was the fourth consecutive win for East Carolina (6-3) while BYU (4-5) has lost four straight. The Pirates were aided on their final drive with a 15-yard pass interference penalty on fourth-and-8 to get to the BYU 22 with 40 seconds left.

Mitchell carried the ball 21 times that included an 31-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He was later hit in the head by Jacob Boren after catching an 8-yard pass from Holton Ahlers with six minutes left in the game. Mitchell finished the series, but then sat on the bench with his helmet off and didn't play in the final drive. Boren was ejected for targeting. Ahlers threw for 197 yards and added a pair of short-yardage touchdown runs for the Pirates. Jaren Hall threw two touchdown passes and was 18-of-25 passing for 144 yards and added 60 yards on the ground for BYU. Lopini Katoa had 116 yards rushing on 20 carries with a 24-yard touchdown run. - East Carolina/AP College Football

Less than an hour after the East Carolina football team pulled off its most important win of the season, Holton Ahlers spoke about the end. Aware that his time playing quarterback for ECU is fading, Ahlers said he made sure to take note of his entrance into Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium and the feeling of playing under the lights in front of a lively crowd. One home game remains on the 2022 schedule, a Nov. 19 date with Houston, and Saturday marked the fifth-year senior's penultimate game in Greenville. And while Ahlers spoke of his time here, a thought occurred to me. The Pirates, and everyone who invests time and energy in following this team, should be thankful that Ahlers is still around. ECU doesn't beat a Central Florida team that was receiving votes in the national polls the way it did on Saturday without a quarterback of his caliber.

He gave his receivers opportunities to make plays all game and his coach-like understanding of everything going on around him was important as the Pirates ripped apart the Knights' vaunted defense. It was Dec. 4, 2021, a Saturday, when Ahlers announced he would be returning for his fifth season at ECU. In the days leading up to games this year, some opposing coaches have joked that Ahlers has seemingly been around forever. He has certainly been a longtime fixture under center for the Pirates, and Saturday's performance showed why he belongs back there. His decision to return stamped out any question of who would play quarterback for the Pirates in 2022. His decision also pushed the pause button on the rest of the quarterback room's ascent to the field on game day. The rostered quarterbacks would spend another season lying in wait as the veteran exhausted his eligibility. - Daily Reflector

Holton Ahlers ran for a score and threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter as East Carolina jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a 34-13 victory over UCF on Saturday night. Freshman Andrew Conrad's 28-yard first-quarter field goal and Ahlers' 3-yard touchdown run gave East Carolina (5-3, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) a 10-0 lead midway through the second period. Ahlers connected with C.J. Johnson for a 39-yard touchdown and a 17-0 advantage before freshman Colton Boomer kicked a 27-yard field goal on the final play of the half to get UCF (5-2, 2-1) on the scoreboard.

The Knights pulled within 17-10 on their first possession of the second half when Isaiah Bowser scored on a 3-yard run at the end of a 10-play, 74-yard drive. But Keaton Mitchell answered with a 6-yard touchdown run, Conrad added a fourth-quarter field goal and Mitchell capped the scoring with a 37-yard run to preserve the win for the Pirates. Ahlers completed 30 of 36 passes for 311 yards for East Carolina. Johnson hauled in 11 passes for 140 yards. Mitchell finished with 105 yards on 16 carries.   C.J. Johnson caught a two-point conversion pass from Holton Ahlers in the fourth overtime and East Carolina outlasted Memphis 47-45 for a wild homecoming victory on Saturday night. Memphis failed to score in the fourth overtime. Excluding East Carolina's 19-second possession at the end of the fourth quarter, nine of the last 10 possessions ended with the offense in the end zone. The teams traded touchdowns late in the fourth quarter, scored two each in overtime, and three of four two-point conversions were successful in the third and fourth overtimes. East Carolina trailed for much of regulation but got a big boost from safety Julius Wood, whose 47-yard interception return in the third quarter tied the game for the first time at 20-all. Wood also had 11 tackles, six solo.

Late in the fourth quarter, East Carolina drove 75 yards ending in Keaton Mitchell's run for 1 yard for a TD and a 30-23 lead with 1:45 remaining. The lead didn't last long as Memphis drove 75 yards, capped by a 13-yard TD pass from Seth Henigan to Joseph Scates to send the game to overtime. Mitchell had 149 yards rushing and three touchdowns for ECU (4-3, 2-2 American). Ahlers completed 26 of 34 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Winstead had nine receptions for 154 yards and a touchdown. For Memphis (4-3, 2-2), Henigan was 27-of-37 passing for 407 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Scates caught five for 112 yards and a touchdown. There were three punts in the game - two by ECU and one by Memphis. - East Carolina/AP College Football
