  10/18/20 - Noah GraySr/2021, Duke + More +

Duke quarterback Chase Brice has had an inconsistent season but he quickly learned one thing: throwing the ball to Noah Gray is never a bad decision. No Duke tight end has caught more passes than Gray. His second catch in Saturday's game against N.C. State moved him past Stan Crisson with 99 career receptions, the most by a tight end in school history. Crisson played in the early 1960s. No. 87 for the Blue Devils is dependable, reliable, consistent. The 6-4, 240-pound senior can mix it up along the line, getting key blocks. He can find the open areas in pass routes and has the sure hands, and he's a big target.

Against Notre Dame in the opener, Gray lined up in the backfield at times. On one play, he shot a gap through the line after the snap and hauled in a nice sideline pass. Gray, a native of Leominster, Mass., was named one of Duke's co-captains for the 2020 season. That came after a 2019 season in which he caught 51 passes, was named second-team All-ACC and was a second team Walter Camp All-America selection. Gray led ACC tight ends in catches and was second among Power Five tight ends in grab in 2019. - Herald Sun

  10/17/20 - Deon JacksonSr/2021, Duke + More +

Duke's running back duo Deon Jackson and Mataeo Durant carried the game against Syracuse, both recording 150+ rushing yards. They became the first Blue Devils pair to rush for 150+ yards in a single game, and the first duo to rush for 100+ since three Duke players did so against Indiana five years ago. Jackson, who rushed for 169 yards, currently sits eighth in the ACC, averaging 82.40 yards per game. His total on Saturday ranks as the fourth most by a single rusher under Cutcliffe while Durant ranks as fifth (163 yards). "I feel like me and Deon are very much pretty similar, he's just a bigger back than I am. I feel like we have a lot of speed and we're both very powerful," Durant said. "We're just a great one-two punch overall-there's not a drop-off when he comes in or when I go in." - Herald Sun

  09/23/20 - Mark GilbertrSr/2021, Duke + More +

Duke senior cornerback Mark Gilbert underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a loose bone fragment in his right foot. He will be out of action indefinitely. The Fayetteville, N.C., native started Duke's opening two games, making eight tackles, and intercepting one pass. In 29 career games, Gilbert has accumulated 65 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, seven interceptions, and 17 pass breakups. - Duke Football

Duke redshirt junior cornerback Josh Blackwell underwent surgery Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee suffered in Sunday's practice. He will be out indefinitely. The Buford, Ga., native started Duke's opening two games, making four tackles, including one tackle for loss. He was also the Blue Devils' primary punt returner, registering five returns this season for 35 yards. - Duke Football

  09/23/20 - Noah GraySr/2021, Duke + More +

When in doubt, find Noah Gray. That's been the strategy for Duke quarterback Chase Brice, who has now linked up with the senior tight end 10 times for 129 yards in the Blue Devils' first two games. "He's a fast-twitch guy with great hands," Brice said of Gray. "And he knows how to get open." After catching five passes for 68 yards on eight targets against No. 10 Notre Dame, the 6-foot-4 Gray caught another five for 61 yards on seven targets in a 26-6 loss to Boston College on Saturday. In both games, the reigning All-ACC second teamer has led Duke (0-2) in receiving yards and tied for the lead in receptions. And he's on pace to shatter Duke's all-time tight end catch record - with 86 career catches, he's just 12 behind all-time leader Stan Crisson's 98 from 1961 to 1963.

The Brice-Gray connection was perhaps the only positive to glean from the Blue Devils' blowout loss to the Eagles, one in which they turned the ball over five times and were outscored 19-0 in the second half. And even Gray's productivity has been tied to Duke's struggles. Although he's gotten down the field for a few big gains this season, Gray has mostly been forced into a safety valve role for Brice, catching shorter passes as the graduate quarterback escapes pressure and sacks - which have been plentiful through Duke's first two games. - Herald Sun

Senior defensive end Victor Dimukeje flirted with a school record Saturday. He logged two solo sacks and three sack assists for a total of 3.5 sacks - the second most in team history, behind Blaine Earon's four against Georgia Tech in 1949. And he did it against a Boston College offensive line that returned four All-ACC selections. Dimukeje nows sits in a tie for second with his teammate, Chris Rumph II, who also logged 3.5 sacks in a win against Miami last season. - Herald Sun

Duke center Jack Wohlabaugh announced Friday that he intends to play the 2021 season for the Blue Devils. The redshirt senior was lost for this season with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament sustained in a Sept. 1 practice. Wohlabaugh was elected a team captain by his Duke teammates. He said in a social media post that he plans to make an impact this season in ways off the field. "Although unable to be in the trenches with my teammates, I will do my best to help them be the best versions of themselves every step of the way," Wohlabaugh's announcement said. He has made 18 career starts. - Herald Sun

  09/09/20 - Deon JacksonSr/2021, Duke + More +

Duke guard Jacob Monk recently was asked about a preseason scrimmage and what offensive players caught his eye. "Deon Jackson," Monk quickly responded, "is a playmaker." That's what Duke needs him to be. Jackson, a 6-0, 220-pound senior running back, followed up a strong 2018 - 847 yards rushing, 5.26 yards per carry - with more modest numbers (641, 3.73) last season. The Blue Devils, ninth in the ACC in rushing in 2019, need Jackson at his best, making plays. And healthy. Duke coach David Cutcliffe has said the running back position is among the team's thinnest. Ideally, Cutcliffe said, a team needs five backs. The Blue Devils won't go into the season opener Saturday against Notre Dame with that much depth. Jackson gobbles up yards. In 37 career games, he has rushed for 1,585 yards (and 13 TDs) and caught 51 passes for 449. He also has returned 28 kickoffs for 611 yards and completed one pass. All total: 2,645 all-purpose yards. Jackson also is dependable with the ball in his hands. He has just four lost fumbles in 444 touches. - Herald Sun

Duke coach David Cutcliffe, on his weekly radio show, called Wohlabaugh's injury heart-breaking. But he also used an old military expression - "Close ranks and keep marching" - in describing the situation. Duke has the numbers on the offensive line to do that. Will Taylor, a redshirt junior, will step in for Wohlabaugh, just as he did last season when Wohlabaugh needed ankle surgery. "He's very good," sophomore guard Jacob Monk said of Taylor. "He was told after his injury his freshman year he'd never play football again, never run again. But here he is. He's battled through all the odds." The Blue Devils have versatility and experience on the line. They also have a new offensive line coach in Greg Frey, whose previous coaching stops include South Florida, Michigan and Florida State, his alma mater. - Herald Sun

  09/05/20 - Myles JonesrSr/2024, Duke + More +

Cornerback was one of the Texas A&M football team's most experienced positions, but now the Aggies could use a newcomer or two to have a big season after projected starter Elijah Blades opted out of the season. Blades was one of just two players on the roster with starting experience at cornerback. Senior Myles Jones has 21 career starts, including 15 straight. "Myles Jones has led that group at the corners," A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher said on a Zoom conference call Thursday. "I think he's playing really well, running well and probably is in the best shape he's been in."

During a Zoom conference call on Aug. 22, Fisher alluded to Blades getting back on the field, but the 6-2, 180-pounder took to Twitter on Monday night to announce he'd sit out the season. A&M already had several newcomers vying for playing time at cornerback, including freshmen Jaylon Jones from Cibolo Steele and Josh Moten from National Christian Academy in Waldorf, Maryland, and transfer Brian George, a second-team junior college All-American who played at Highland Community College in Kansas. "The guys we signed there at corner, I'm really happy with," Fisher said. "I think Brian George is doing an outstanding job. Jaylon Jones has been outstanding from the minute he walked on campus. He acts like a senior. Josh Moten has really done some good things as far as knowledge, competing." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Duke's offensive line took a huge hit Wednesday when it was announced starting center Jack Wohlabaugh has been ruled out with a knee injury. Wohlabaugh, a 6-4, 305-pound senior, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to the right knee, the school said and will need surgery. Duke also announced redshirt sophomore cornerback Ken Torain will be out of action indefinitely and will need surgery for an injured right shoulder. Wohlabaugh started nine games last season before suffering a season-ending ankle injury that required surgery. Duke's best offensive lineman, he earned honorable mention All-ACC honors in 2019.

Wohlabaugh, from Akron, Ohio, is a former transfer from Ohio State. He took over as Duke's starting center during the 2018 season after an injury to Zach Harmon and remained the starter after Harmon's return. Duke scored 40 or more points in five games in 2018, tying a school record for a season. Wohlabaugh received the Dan "Tiger" Hill Award as the team's most outstanding offensive lineman and the Sonny Falcone Award for his commitment to strength training and conditioning in the 2019 season. - Herald Sun

  09/03/20 - Mark GilbertrSr/2021, Duke + More +

Mark Gilbert is back after a physical and mental journey that forced him to miss two years of Duke football. After an All-American caliber season in 2017, the cornerback from Fayetteville looked like he was going to be a strong contender for the NFL draft after his junior year. In the ACC, Gilbert, then a sophomore, ranked first in total passes defended (21), first in total passes defended per game (1.62), second in interceptions and second in interceptions per game (0.46) after starting 13 games that season. Nationally, he was tied for third in interceptions, tied for third in total passes defended per game and tied for third in total passes defended. While covering a Northwestern receiver, the cornerback appeared to overextend his left leg. The season-ending dislocated hip injury resulted in surgery a day later. He was expected to return for the 2019 season. That is until a second hip surgery forced him to miss fall camp.

Through therapy and rehab, the 6-1, 175-pound Gilbert hoped to return to the team, but he wondered at times "Was I ever going to play again?" When he realized he was going to go back to playing, he started having new worries. "When I kind of realized I was gonna play again, it was the thought of 'Was I gonna reach the elite level that I was playing in my sophomore year?" Gilbert said. "But as everything progressed, as I started returning to practice again, I started gaining all my confidence back." Now, he's back and he says he is better than before. He said his game IQ is higher, he's becoming a smarter player, and has a more physical aspect to his game than he had before. He said, "I'm a lot stronger with being able to practice longer." - Herald Sun
