Offensive line play is rarely the most glamorous storyline heading into a football season, and the words "functional depth" don't do much to spice up the conversation. But note the word Clemson coach Dabo Swinney used this summer when he admitted his squad didn't have enough depth along the offensive line in 2021. "It was a disaster," Swinney said. "I think we'll have more functional players, and I think that's a position that will perform well for us." Questions surround D.J. Uiagalelei and the Tigers' quarterback position entering the season, but the offensive line may hold the key to Clemson's offense finding more consistency in 2022.

The line cracked almost immediately in the opener versus an ultra-talented Georgia defense. Then it took weeks to find its footing amid a game of musical chairs on the interior. Matt Bockhorst didn't fit at center and then tore his ACL after a return to guard. Marcus Tate was more ready than his freshman counterparts to plug in at guard, but the converted tackle was prone to mental slips. The offense finally came along when Mason Trotter and Hunter Rayburn reinforced the guard and center spots, but their availability was always tenuous. Rayburn is now medically retired because of a neck issue, and Trotter will have to miss a chunk of the '22 season to an off-the-field, non-disciplinary issue. The questions that dogged Clemson throughout last season - the three spots between all-conference caliber tackles Jordan McFadden and Walker Parks - remain the same heading into another season. - Charleston Post Courier

The Clemson Tigers will officially begin their 2022 season with a Monday night game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sept. 5 against Georgia Tech in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game. "For the first time in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game's history we'll host two teams from the same conference facing off and starting ACC conference play in Atlanta," Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl CEO and president, said in a statement. "These are two great rivals and two passionate fan bases who will be in the national spotlight in prime time on Labor Day night." Clemson has played in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game twice (Alabama in 2008, Auburn in 2012).

The kickoff time for the season opener (8 p.m.) as well as the Tigers' next two games were all released Thursday afternoon. Clemson is slated to play Furman at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 10 and Louisiana Tech at 8 p.m. Sept. 17. The game against Georgia Tech will be televised on ESPN, while ACC Network with televise both the Furman and Louisiana Tech games. Clemson finished 10-3 last season, ending its season with a victory over Iowa State in the Cheez-It Bowl. - The State

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has high hopes for wide receiver Justyn Ross after the former Tiger was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. "I mean, he might be the greatest free agent ever if he stays healthy," Swinney said Wednesday of Ross. The caveat of health is what caused Ross to go from a potential first- or second-round pick to not hearing his name called at all during the 2022 NFL Draft. That's not supposed to happen after the ad Swinney said only four teams medically cleared Ross, one of which was the Chiefs.

That created an even smaller pool from which to get drafted but provided the Alabama native a better understanding of how his path to the NFL would have to be carved. In addition to the congenital fusion in his spine, the wideout missed the last three games of his final season at Clemson with a foot injury. Ross reportedly chose the Chiefs because of coach Andy Reid and getting to play with a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes. It also doesn't hurt that a former Tiger in Sammy Watkins played in Reid's system in 2018-20. - The State

It took until the seventh round for Clemson to have its second player, linebacker Baylon Spector, selected in the NFL draft. Spector, a fifth-year linebacker, was taken No. 231 overall by the Buffalo Bills on April 30. That came 189 picks after the Minnesota Vikings took cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. with a second-round selection, No. 42 overall. This is the first year since 2008 that Clemson has had only two players drafted by NFL teams. As far as the last decade, this is the longest span between Clemson players being drafted. There were 122 players selected between fourth-rounder K'Von Wallace (No. 127 overall) and seventh-rounder Tremayne Anchrum (No. 250) in 2020. There were 105 players taken between first-rounder Stephone Anthony (No. 31) and fifth-rounder Grady Jarrett (137) in the '15 draft. - Charleston Post Courier

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney became the sixth-fastest coach in college football history to reach 150 victories. He gave the credit to his players following the No. 19 Tigers' 20-13 victory over Iowa State on Wednesday night in the Cheez-It Bowl. "This team's journey was full of adversity and we probably had more adversity this year than the last seven combined," said Swinney, who became just the third coach to win at least 150 games in fewer than 15 seasons. "What made it great was how everybody in the whole program, the thing that never flinched was the leadership. "This was a complete program effort. … What made this team special was because they didn't make excuses."

Clemson (10-3) won its sixth straight game to reach 10 victories for an 11th consecutive season. Florida State (14 from 1987-00) and Alabama (14 from 2008-21) are the only programs with longer streaks. Cornerback Mario Goodrich was named the game's MVP after returning an interception 18 yards for a third-quarter touchdown and swatting the ball out of Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy's hands in the final minute to preserve the victory. "It means a lot for everyone on this team because we started off 2-2 and to rally back and get 10 wins is amazing," Goodrich said. "To keep the tradition going, it's a legacy. It's amazing to finish my last game with these guys and go out on a good note." - Clemson/AP College Football

2021 BRIAN PICCOLO AWARD WINNER: Clemson's Ross caught 112 passes for nearly 1,900 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first two collegiate seasons, but he was diagnosed in March 2020 with a congenital fusion condition of his neck and spine, plus a disc protrusion that ultimately required surgery. The Phenix City, Alabama, native missed the entire 2020 season and began rehab amidst doubts he would ever play football again. Ross battled his way back to again become an integral part of the Tigers' offensive attack this season.

Despite a foot injury that sidelined him for the final two regular-season games, Ross leads the team with 46 receptions for 514 yards and three touchdowns and regained his status as a probable early-round NFL Draft pick. "Justyn Ross is the epitome of the Brian Piccolo Award," said Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. "This is a great, great player who went from being told he was never going to play football again, to maybe there is a 50 percent chance and facing a 17-19 month grueling process. To see him come back and play 10 games and do the things that he did, I am so grateful. "One of the worst days I've experienced as a coach was being there when the doctors told him what was going on and telling him that he may never play again. And one of the best days I've had as a coach was seeing him take the field again for the Tigers and seeing him get that first diving catch. I'm really proud of him and thankful that I had a chance to be part of his journey." - ACC Football
