UConn named redshirt sophomore Ta'Quan Roberson as its starting quarterback on Saturday, seven hours ahead of the Huskies' season opener at Utah State. Roberson transferred to UConn from Penn State in December 2021, shortly after head coach Jim Mora was hired. A dual-threat, Roberson attempted 29 passes over two seasons at Penn State (2019 and 2021), completing 11 for 85 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. The only quarterback on campus and healthy enough to practice in the spring, Roberson quickly impressed Mora and the new UConn staff.

The decision for him to start, however, was one that Mora kept "close to the vest," as he said Aug. 17. To begin preseason camp, reps with the first-team offense were split almost evenly between Roberson and the other three rostered quarterbacks: true freshman Zion Turner, redshirt freshman Tyler Phommachanh and redshirt sophomore Cale Millen, who transferred from FCS Northern Arizona. As the team shifted to game-prep mode, Roberson emerged and received a majority of snaps with the starters. - Hartford Courant

James Patterson began his fifth season with the Bulls when they opened preseason practices Thursday at UB Stadium in preparation for their season opener at noon Sept. 3 at Maryland. The linebacker from Glenn Dale, Md., is using his extra year of eligibility, granted by the NCAA in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He didn't want to leave the program after an uncharacteristic 4-8 season, either - UB's first under-.500 season since 2016, when the Bulls were 2-10. "4-8 is not a good look," Patterson said. "That's not been the known, that's not been the recent for Buffalo football. Since I've been here, we've always been to a MAC championship game or to a bowl game, so that's the expectation. We want to keep rising, and try to go to a New Year's Six bowl. That's always been the goal, to be a top 25 team, and to make it even better."

Patterson led UB and was second in the Mid-American Conference with 116 tackles in 2021, and he returns to the Bulls after sitting out UB's spring game due to sports-hernia surgery. He also returns to a team that underwent significant offseason roster turnover, as 21 FBS and FCS transfers and 15 true freshmen and junior-college players join this year's roster. "The fact that he is back, James Patterson is one of the top returning players in college football," UB coach Maurice Linguist said. "He probably had a lot of opportunities after the season to do a lot of things, and he's on a lot of NFL scouts' lists right now. The fact that he said, 'I'm coming back,' ... it tells you something, when your best players and the best people and the fact they want to come back, it speaks to what we feel like is going on in that locker room right now. "We're excited about the ability they bring and the leadership they've provided." - Buffalo News

Steven Krajewski, UConn's primary signal caller in 2021, transferred to Georgia State May 17, leaving the position wide open. Ta'Quan Roberson, who transferred to UConn from Penn State in December, seems to be the favorite for the job in a QB room packed with transfers. Roberson, a redshirt junior, played in three games at Penn State last year and completed 11 of 28 passes for 85 yards. He also ran the ball 12 times for 24 yards. "I knew who he was, because I followed recruiting," Mora told The Courant in February. "A four-star kid out of one of the best high school programs in the country. When he popped in the portal, this was a guy we needed to try to connect with immediately. We were able to get him in here and show him what the plan would be for him and, I'll tell you, he's a really great kid. He's impressive."

Roberson isn't the only new face in the QB room. The list also includes Zion Turner, a decorated three-star from St. Thomas Aquinas High in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Cale Millen, another three-star who committed to Oregon out of high school before transferring to FCS Northern Arizona last year. Tyler Phommachanh will compete for the starting job after starting three games in 2021 before a season-ending injury. - Hartford Courant

2022 PRESEASON RAY GUY WATCHLIST: Ethan Duane - Old Dominion,...Duane (6-1, 212) is a native of Melbourne, Australia. He played his first competitive football game ever in ODU's first game of the 2021 season at Wake Forest. He punted 58 times for a 39.7-yard average. He had a long punt of 60 yards and had 13 punts downed inside the 20. An Australian rules football player, Duan trained for a year in the Prokick Australian program to learn punting. He was rewarded with a full scholarship and said good-bye to family and friends in January 2020 and headed for Old Dominion. Alas, the COVID-19 pandemic left him sort of stranded in a new land that year and he used Facetime to visit folks at home. When ODU told players to go home in March 2020, Duane was in a tough spot since Australia closed its borders. ODU quarterback Hayden Wolf and his mother, Lori Wellbaum Emery, invited Duane to stay with their blended family - meaning it involved three different homes - for several months. By Christmas, 2020, Duane was calling Lori Emery "Mum." - Old Dominion Football
