  06/25/22 - Jaren HallrJr/2023, Brigham Young, 6-0, 207 (DS#11 QB) + More +

BYU exceeded expectations during what was thought to be a rebuilding year last fall, going 10-3 and rising as high as No. 10 in the Associated Press poll. The Cougars likely won't be underestimated in 2022, with 18 of 22 starters returning. Among the most notable returners is quarterback Jaren Hall, who passed for 2,583 yards and 20 touchdowns, with five interceptions and a 63.9% completion rate in his first year as a starter. He also rushed for 307 yards and three scores, and with another solid season, will likely receive significant interest from NFL scouts. - Wyoming Tribune Eagle

  06/06/22 - Isaac RexrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-5, 247 (DS#19 TE) + More +

The wildcard in this year's BYU draft class is Isaac Rex. The tight end is still recovering from a broken ankle last season. But at 6-foot-6, 247 pounds, Rex remains an enticing pass-catching weapon for NFL teams. Rex had one of the best freshman seasons in the country in 2020, with 12 touchdowns and 429 yards receiving. However, in 2021, Rex's production dipped before getting hurt in the bowl game. He finished with three touchdowns and 19 fewer catches. - Salt Lake Tribune

Conference realignment killed many of the most storied rivalries in college football, but West Virginia and Pitt are scheduled to meet eight times over the next 11 seasons, starting Sept. 1 at Heinz Field. To commemorate the occasion, the schools put their heads together to create the official Backyard Brawl logo, released Thursday - 105 days before the 105th edition of the football rivalry. The game will be the first between the schools since 2011 and will be the season opener for both teams.

The logo features different variations that can include both teams, a football-only version, a school-specific logo and an option that can highlight a game sponsor. Fans will be able to purchase special merchandise, beginning in August, featuring the new logo. Apparel also will be available in future years. Pitt leads the series 61-40-3, but West Virginia has won 16 of the past 26 games, including a 21-20 victory in the most recent renewal in Morgantown, W.Va. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

  05/11/22 - Gerry BohanonrSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-2, 225 (DS#43 QB) + More +

USF pulled off its biggest portal coup yet Sunday, landing a commitment from Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon. The starter for 12 games last season, including the Bears' 21-7 Sugar Bowl win against Mississippi, Bohanon made a visit to Tampa this weekend after previously visiting Missouri. He also had generated interest from Oklahoma, Georgia Tech and Liberty. National recruiting analyst Mike Farrell recently named Bohanon the best QB remaining in the portal. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining. "It was USF because I believed in Coach (Jeff) Scott, I believe in that staff, I believe in everything they're doing right now," Bohanon, a 6-foot-2 1/2, 220-pound dual threat, said Sunday evening.

Barely used his first three seasons at Baylor, Bohanon broke out in 2021, throwing for 2,200 yards, 18 touchdowns and only seven interceptions while helping lead Baylor to the Big 12 title. An All-Big 12 honorable mention, he didn't throw a pick the first six games of the year. He missed the regular-season finale and Big 12 title game with a hamstring injury, but returned for the Sugar Bowl. Though not 100 percent, he winced his way through the game, totaling 61 yards and two touchdowns in the triumph. - Tampa Tribune

  05/11/22 - Caleb EtiennerSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-7, 329 (DS#22 OT) + More +

With college offensive linemen, size is almost always viewed as a positive trait. But for some, they pass the point of benefit and it becomes a hindrance. That's where Caleb Etienne was when he arrived at Oklahoma State last summer. The 6-foot-7 transfer from Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas, showed up weighing 360 pounds. On top of that, he hadn't played in an actual game since the fall of 2019, because the COVID pandemic wiped out an entire year of football for most junior colleges across the country. So even though he had been training, he wasn't in the type of shape required to play a full game - especially in the fast-paced Oklahoma State offense.

When fall camp opened last August, opportunity was ripe for Etienne. The Cowboys needed a starting left tackle, and he fit the bill. But physically, he wasn't ready to adapt to the intensity of the OSU offense. And that slowed his ability to learn the system as well. He appeared in the first three games of the season as a backup, gaining some important on-field experience. He continued to suit up for the rest of the season, but it became a year of development for the promising prospect. When spring practice opened in March, a slimmer Etienne was at the front of the left tackle line. "I lost about 40 pounds and I'm feeling good," Etienne said following the Cowboys' spring finale last month. "It makes a lot of difference. I can move better. My knees don't hurt as much. It's been going good and I'm really happy about that." - Daily Oklahoman

  05/10/22 - Gerry BohanonrSr/2025, Brigham Young, 6-2, 225 (DS#43 QB) + More +

Former Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon announced that he has committed to USF after entering the transfer portal nearly two weeks ago. Bohanon decided to transfer after Baylor coach Dave Aranda chose sophomore Blake Shapen as the starting quarterback following the end of spring drills. The deadline to enter the transfer portal was May 1 to be eligible for the 2022 season. As a fourth-year junior, Bohanon threw for 2,200 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for 323 yards and nine scores in 12 starts for the Bears in 2021. After Bohanon went down with a hamstring injury in the 11th game against Kansas State, Shapen stepped in as the starting quarterback and led the Bears to a regular-season ending win over Texas Tech followed by a win over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 championship game. - Waco Tribune Herald

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi didn't mention the big news - Jordan Addison entering his name in the NCAA transfer portal - while speaking this week at the Peach Bowl Challenge, a charity golf event outside Atlanta. But when he was asked about Kedon Slovis, Narduzzi wasn't shy about discussing how his transfer quarterback found his way from USC to Pitt. "He's just a super kid," Narduzzi said on a video submitted to the news media by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

"He wasn't looking for a payday. He was looking for the right place to be, with a great culture. He's a guy who actually went into the (NCAA transfer) portal the real way, the right way. "He had a lot of opportunities with name, image and likeness, but I think he was looking for the right fit. He was looking for the right personnel. We had a lot returning on offense." Narduzzi pointed out during the interview that Pitt lost only two starters on offense from 2021 - Kenny Pickett and Lucas Krull - without mentioning Addison, the Biletnikoff winner and All-American wide receiver who put his name in the portal. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Four months to the day when Missouri kicks off the 2022 football season, Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz walked into Mizzou Softball Stadium on Sunday with a conspicuous guest, former Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon, the third high-profile Power 5 quarterback transfer Drinkwitz has hosted on campus this spring. Maybe third time's a charm? Bohanon entered the NCAA transfer portal last week, fresh off playing a major role in the Bears' 2021 Big 12 championship season. Bohanon started 12 of 14 games for 12-win Baylor last season and missed two games with a hamstring injury, including the Big 12 championship game victory over Oklahoma State. He returned to start the Sugar Bowl win over Ole Miss. - Post-Dispatch

  04/29/22 - Aidan RobbinsrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-2, 237 (DS#39 RB) + More +

UNLV has added two more Power Five transfers to its football roster Monday. Former Louisville running back Aidan Robbins and outside linebacker Elijah Shelton, who has played for Utah and Utah State, announced their transfer on social media. Robbins, a 6-foot-3-inch tailback from Louisville, Kentucky, played in four games last season, rushing for 41 yards and a touchdown on two carries. He has three years of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-2-inch Shelton played defensive end and outside linebacker. The Salt Lake City native began his career with Utah State and made 15 tackles, including two sacks, in five games during the shortened 2020 season. He transferred to Utah for 2021 but didn't play and has two years of eligibility. - Las Vegas Review Journal

  03/05/22 - Keenan EllisrSr/2023, Brigham Young, 6-0, 181 (DS#999 CB) + More +

No matter what happened, Kennan Ellis did not want to tell his mom. It was the morning of Jan. 5, the day Ellis would meet with BYU's head trainer Steve Pincock and team physician Darren Campbell. After months of seeing countless doctors and upward of five specialists for his neck injury, that afternoon he would find out if he would ever play football again. And he couldn't bring himself to tell his mom. Because if the answer was no, telling his mom would make it real. "I remember everything about that day," Ellis told The Salt Lake Tribune. "It was just a nightmare. I sat in the training room and they told me it's too dangerous to play. I'd have to medically retire." Ellis drove home in the snow in silence.

He didn't talk for the next five hours. By the next morning, Ellis still hadn't come to terms with it. His body felt fine. So he went to the football offices like usual. He talked to special teams coordinator Ed Lamb and left. It wasn't until 48 hours later - after trying unsuccessfully to live a normal life - when he broke down and told his family. "Football was always my dream because of the opportunities," Ellis said. "It gave me a free education and my parents didn't have to worry. I always saw the NFL as an opportunity to help support my family financially. So just telling my mom felt like, Man, that is all cut off." - Salt Lake Tribune

  12/21/21 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Kedon Slovis is trading USC for Pittsburgh. The former Trojans quarterback announced Tuesday he is heading east to join the ACC champion Panthers, where he will get a chance to replace ACC Player of the Year Kenny Pickett. "I'm feeling incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a Panther — and I can't wait to prove myself again on this stage," Slovis said in a piece he wrote for The Players Tribune released Tuesday evening. Slovis entered his junior season at USC as a Heisman Trophy contender but he struggled to find any rhythm. He passed for 2,153 yards with 11 touchdowns against eight interceptions in nine games before being lost for the season with a leg injury.

Slovis joins a wide-open race to replace Pickett, who announced last week he will not play when the 13th-ranked Panthers (11-2) face No. 10 Michigan State (10-2) in the Peach Bowl next week. Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi has not said who will start in place of Pickett, though Nick Patti figures to get the nod as the primary backup. The Panthers also have Davis Beville and Arizona State transfer Joey Yellen, who joined Pitt in January 2020. Pitt is in the process of looking for a new offensive coordinator after Mark Whipple left for the same position at Nebraska. - AP College Football

  12/14/21 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Kedon Slovis was an overlooked and underappreciated three-star prospect when, in September 2019, he was abruptly thrust into the spotlight as a true freshman, forced to take over in the season opener for injured JT Daniels. Expectations, at the time, were low. But for the better part of the next three seasons, as Slovis took hold of his opportunity and transformed into a two-time All-Pac-12 passer and potential NFL prospect, he never relinquished the reins as quarterback and guided USC during three tumultuous seasons. He was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in his first season, led the Trojans to a Pac-12 title game during his second, pandemic-altered campaign and then helped usher them through an emotional coaching change as a junior, all the while watching his hold on the job slip away.

Slovis officially entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday, a decision that seemed assured since the sudden arrival this fall of freshman quarterback Jaxson Dart. For Slovis, it marked a bittersweet conclusion to an uneven tenure as the Trojans' signal caller. He passed for 7,576 yards and 58 touchdowns during his three seasons at USC, totals that rank among the top seven in school history. Early on, it seemed Slovis was a diamond in the rough uncovered by USC and suddenly destined for stardom. But by the end of his final season, it had become clear USC was ready to move forward, and Slovis was ready to move on. Before the 2021 campaign, Slovis was still seen as a potential first-round NFL draft pick. His name was noted on preseason Heisman Trophy watch lists. But the season didn't go as planned, for either USC or its quarterback. - Los Angeles Times
